Hirai: Rivals can’t compete with PS3’s exclusives

Global PlayStation boss says first-party titles and Blu-Ray capacity set console apart from 360 and Wii

Sony Computer Entertainment president Kaz Hirai believes that PS3’s “unrivalled” first-party product and Blu-Ray capabilities mean the console enjoys better exclusive content than either of its competitors' machines.

Addressing the issue of Microsoft’s investment in ‘exclusive’ downloadable content for titles such as GTA IV – and speaking after the much-publicised deal that made Final Fantasy XIII a 360 game – Hirai explained:

“On the exclusivity front – whether it’s downloadable or not – one of the unrivalled strengths we have, and we’ve proven this time and time again, is the power of our internal worldwide studios. Our first-party product is obviously platform exclusive and is the best out there.

"We’ve talked about a raft of great titles, whether that’s Little Big Planet, Resistance 2, SoCom, God Of War 3, Killzone 2, MaG, Motorstorm: Pacific Rift.

"Secondly, if we talk about Blu-Ray, there’s a lot of capacity there. Our discussion with a lot of the publishers is about how the PS3 version of a game has the capacity to exclusive things consumers will be interested in – interviews with the makers of the game, documentary on the franchise or 'making of...' footage.

"That’s as well as additional weapons, levels, tools and characters. Those things very much differentiate our offerings over and above other versions of the same game.”

Owning a 360 and a PS3, the PS3 is where the great games are on 2008. The trend I have noticed, is my 360 is getting less and less use these days..

Im thinking of getting a 360 or a ps3 but idk which one. The 360 has more games but only 1 out of 3 are good and the ps3 has less games but most of them are good! So i think both systems are balanced out but ultimatley i think i will go for the ps3 because right now it looks like it has a pretty good future. So many games are comming out and i can't wait for god of war 3, the next MGS game, killzone2, and socom! Im so excited because those games will really keep me busy and i love their prequels!

right now the 360 has more exclusive released than the ps3, but each exclusive from the ps3 is much better, for example, MGS4, thanks to the bluray. well, lets wait for the coming exlusives we already know and those we dont know yet, and the ps3 will show its real capability.

"bury the white box" yeah that would be great for the industry what we need is LESS competition ;) good call Vanessa.

The systems are practically even in terms of game quality and hardware capability, all thigns considered. But no, go on and bash other consoles, it's probably productive somehow.

Kaz Hirai is so right he knows what he's talking about Microsoft doesn't make games they just buy timed exclusives which sucks for Xbox owners. Blu-ray Disc is a huge advantage is 50GB soon 100GB while Xbox 360 dvd9 only holds 8.5GB .

You guys on here saying PS3 has the best exclusives or that 1 out of every 3 Xbox games must either 1. be smoking, or 2. live in a region that doesn't get prompt releases.
First off Nintendo has the best and most exclusive games. you may not like mario, zedla, metroid, etc. but they have the best 1st party titles and 360 has the larget library, most multiplat games are better on 360 and the online for 360 as well as content, etc. is unrivalled.
Please fanboys put the crack pipes down. It's okay if you like any system better but let's stop with the maddness.

yea. . . all the good 360 games are better on pc (here's looking at you Mass Effect; Bioshock; soon to be Fable 2). i have a 360 and ps3 and pc. most of my multiplat games are on ps3, b/c considering how many times my xbox has been sent out, i'd never get to play them. some multiplat games are better, but better textures don't mean much when the junk wont boot up. after seeing mass effect on pc, all of the "exclusive games" on 360 will be promptly purchased on pc

I would have to agree...My 360 gets very little playing time...with games like Folklore, Uncharted, R&C, MGS4, Heavenly Sword, and Siren which I would be purchasing tonight. I think the PS3 has more substance than the 360. I feel they are higer quality games on the PS3 versus the 360. It feels that the 360 has lost its luster the only game I am looking foward to is GOW2.....now my PS3 ****....they are tons of games on the horizon that has excited like a child again.....I love my PS3

Why would you want a console with a bunch of still unnamed great games promised, when you can have a console with even more great games already out, with online second to none, and superior multiplatform across the board?

I have played all three, the xbox, ps3 and the wii. I enjoyed xbox but i have to say from a technical point of view the ps3 out bids the technology in the xbox, but right now xbox is leading. From a long term point of view I would buy a ps3. There are some great ideas floating out from third parties. If universities are using the cell processor to create a super computer and allowing users to contribute their cpu power for protein folding how would the 360 processor compete? If any one here is opening their mouth they should at least know that better computing power always gives the advantage. Not to be obvious but high quality video card, memory, and cpu = greater console and that means the ps3. Yes, games are important but that will come with time. if the 360 has a 5 year life cycle then is everyone going to buy a 720 while the ps3 is still far ahead any console? No i do not believe that. My point has been made and not to be amended. Peace!

I wonder if it's 29 exclusives now that FFXIII is multiplatform. Actuall last week he (Sony Prez) said it was 70, so it's obvious people are throwing numbers from their rectum.

Face it, MGS4 is great (if you can still stand MGS after all these years) but Sony has only two kinds of exclusives right now: ones nobody cares about and ones that aren't out yet.

I'm very impressed my MSG4, thats getting a lot of play at home at the moment. Thankfully it wasn't as camp in gameplay as the trailers demonstrated. It was getting to the stage where I thought the backgrond music would be lifted off "Priscilla Queen of the Desert". Other than that I've only got Flow. I'm hoping MGS4 on line play is good, as up to now PS3 on line play has been pretty dire. At the moment the PS3 gets a good hammering with MSG4, the 360 for most games and on line play. My Wii gets very little use at the moment, mostly wii play until I get around to getting some more games for it.
For the approx 3 quid a month that Xbox live has cost me up to now, its a far better on line system. Each console seems to have found its niche this time, Nintendo with its lower level hardware + interesting controls. Xbox with a rock solid on line play & decent games. PS3 with Blu Ray and MSG4. Hopfully there will be more interesting titles on PS3, Echochrome looks quite good from what I've seen of it.
@simple simon
Yep thats because the companies have found out how to tap in to rabid fanboi-isim to exploit them. Why have a sales team when a bunch of 13 year old kids can do it with peer pressure. Even better, many are too dumb to realise they are being drawn in.

Blu-ray Smoo-ray

While i'm still holding judgement on Sony's claims as they seem all talk atm but would still love to see 30 or so new games for the PS3 (a bit of competition never hurt anyone) i have a very big problem with people using blu-ray as their argument as to why "rivals can't compete".

MS have already said they are going to allow gamers to install games to their hard drives soon, so obviously 50gb of space becomes redundant when you can just plug in a big HDD or buy the xbox one. The other problem is that Sony have ALSO said they are going to do this. And while i appreciate that installing one disc is better than having to swap in and out 2 or 3 ... if you only have to do it once its not really that big a deal.

This would also mean both machines can really get tested as they are no longer controlled by their disc read speeds.

why do people who own a rival console even read or comment on the rivals announcement, why do you care if you dont own that console, i dont understand you all,

some love wii, i think they have alot of exclussives but its designed for fun, younger gamers/family, not indepth rpg,
or mmos etc.
360 has been out a long time so of course it has more games, some very good some very bad, and even that is down to taste, some love halo, i dont see it at all.
the same could be said for p3,
buy what you console you want to play certain games on, thats it, then enjoy the games, why bash rival consoles if you dont own em who cares.

The PS3 is now and the future with developers on a massive learning curve trying to tame the ps3 massive power which you see more of on exclusives, with xbox306 and ps3 titles the only thing hold the ps3 back is the xbox360, and as for the wii great family fun but just a gimmick not for the serious gamer!

I love both systems. Because both companies are striving to out-do each other and get us the best deal possible. Do you really want the other console (regardless if your a PS3 or 360 fanboy) to die? Do you really want to return to the days similiar to the PS2 where the only gaming option was the PS2 and Sony dictating how, what, where, and how much to charge we played our games? But as someone said earlier, dont you just love school holidays lol.

With the millions of console owners out their, from both camps, neither of them are going away. MS was first out of the gates and that's why they have an install base lead, that simple. I purchased a launch 360 that I had to return twice, but overall I'm very happy with my 360. When Sony launched the following year their price tag (especially when going up against the Wii) steered me to Nintendos machine. So now with a new holiday season approaching and maybe another price cut fro the PS3, it's finally starting to look like a Sony Christmas for me. And look, I said all that without bashing anyone or their console. I think (grown-up) gamers just love good games regardless of the system and their will plenty to be had for each console in the months to come. What a great world it will be. And by that time a lot of the Sony product I want will be Platinum status and way more affordable. When the Moon is in the seventh house and Jupiter aligns with Mars, then peace will guide the planets, and........sorry got lost in gamer Zen. Increase the peace and game on!

I just thought, maybe the problem PS3 has is not its games, hardware, but people like Kaz handling the marketing and development. For instance in this article, MCV journo asks what is unique about the PS3 in order to make it succeed and he talks about Blu-Ray, which quite rightly is a brilliant optical storage medium, and will keep things going until the infrastructural realities of digital downloads become a plausible reality. Ken talks about making of films, behind the scenes interviews etc. Way to go Ken, I have just spent three hundred quid + on a machine that hardly has any games of note on it at the moment, and im sitting here watching a short film of how some nerd draws he's 3-D environements, whilst my family are all huddled round the wii downstairs playign and having a laugh. Thanks for making me feel like even more of a f4rkin' geek LOL.

The PS3 has the potential to be an awesome machine, and its being marketed by chimps i tell thee.

The PS3's biggest downfall is that blu-ray as a gaming medium hasn't delivered becasue the PS3 simply can't stream the information fast enough. For example, MGS 4, (as great as it is), requires a 2-3 minute install for every chapter, even if you wish to replay a level; hardly a great advertisement for the 'benefits' of blu-ray gaming. I imagine FFXIII on the 360 will come on a few discs, and maybe only the one blu-ray disc on PS3, but what is the point if you have to do huge chunks of install when disc swapping takes mere seconds, where's the benefit?

Ok guys seriously now, no fayboy ism's, I want a console that I can play the great game now not 5 years time. Niether MS or Sony know what technology will be doing in 5 years time so its impossible to second guess what will be available.

back to the point............................ I own a 360, a PS3 and a Wii and can honestly say the PS3 get used the least. I love games like Gears, unreal, Naruto, Dragonball Z etc etc and yes I have unreal 3 on both consoles but always play it on the 360 as the voice chat is so much better (and works all the time lol)

So back to the help....................Seriously what games are there that I can play on the PS3 that are not equally as good or better for reasons like cross game invites, fully fuctional chat etc on the 360 as i really want to start using my PS3 whihc is nearly tice the price of my XBOX but would serious srtuggle to justify to anyone the extra expense at the moment. I relly want to start playing my PS3 more but for all of the above when I get home in the evening and left with the choice I alway turn to the 360

(and just for the record I've had no RROD yet after 2 years and no really owrried if I do now that I have 3 years warrenty as do all 360's :-) )

Just my opinion but some serious responses would be appreicated as maybe I'm just missing something

At the moment,as you have the PS360Wii combination, same as me. I'd probably say the only differentiating game is MSG4. Its a pretty darn good game as good as pretty much any 360 game and thankfully not as camp as the trailers lead out to be. If you havn't already, download Flow for some relaxing entertainment. I'm planning to download Echochrome too as this looks novel.

For 90% of my game play is the 360, simply becuase I mostly play on line. The PS3 gets most of its use as a media streamer. Linux on the PS3 is pretty poor, there just isn't enough memory to do it justice and the HDD is painfully slow for swap files.

I've spent a lot of time regretting buying the PS3 and Ken "PS3 saves the world" with his stupid press releases and the rabid drooling fanboi "PS3 eth most powerfullest" brigade have probably done more damage to the PS3 reputation than anything else. Becuase of those dribbling masses companies get to churn out year another "annual sports game point release" instead of comming up with something original & possibly intellegent.

I currently only own a 360, but I have little against the PS3, having said that I think Hirai should put up or shut up, I want to see these PS3 exclusives that are going to wipe the floor with the rivals.

If they are truly great then I will get a PS3 so I can *gasp* play them while playing the exclusives on the 360 and Wii as for "Bluray" off the top of my head I can only think of two titles I would be interested in, The Clone Wars and Stargate: Continuum. I will probably get a PS3 eventually, but apart from Resistance 2 there is nothing I can see that I can't get on the 360 for pretty much identical graphics and game play.

I will admit the xbox is nice..great graphics but the games suck...straight to the point..They have good games but if you think about PS3 has even better games..thats my opinion..they do take a while to come out but the result is awesome..

The Xbox generation or whatever ,has been slacking in my opinion.Nothing extremely interesting ever comes out but whatever.Im with Playstation 3 the whole way...

Typical Sony spin. Man, I can't believe I used to really rate them as a brand. The trinitron days seem to be gone for good now. So much for the PS3 being 10x better than the competition! I always get my multiplatform releases for 360, it's worth it for the smoother frame rate and the extra effects that are all too often missing on PS3. I really hope the PS4 is better, but I probably won't be getting one at launch this time!
