PS3 to become family console

Kaz Hirai says console will take up PS2’s ‘positioning’ in the near future

PlayStation 3 is set to take up the mainstream appeal of its predecessor – with its ‘positioning’ and marketing changing to appeal to a broader audience.

That’s according to the global boss of PlayStation, Kaz Hirai, who told MCV in the second part of our exclusive interview that the system will slowly take the ‘casual’ baton from PS2 in the next few years.

However, Hirai added that although the firm is already appealing to mainstream consumers, the console doesn’t need to “be everything to everybody just yet” – and that Sony had “just begun to scratch the surface” of the console’s potential in a family market.

Hirai told MCV:

“If we’re talking about the casual gamer, the PS2 is probably the right choice for them. We don’t need the PS3 to feel like the console that will appeal to everyone at this point. We don’t need to have one console try to be everything to everybody just yet.

He added:

“Just as the PS2 marketing and positioning has evolved over the past ten years, we’ll make sure the PS3 messaging evolves as well.”

I'm sure familes will rather pay 400$ for a ps3 rather than 250$ for the ever so popular wii that there kids have been beging for.

Tommy, the article states that Sony isn't targeting those kids... yet. You don't seriously think that kids and adults will still be begging for the Wii next year do you? The PS3 vs. Wii is a turtle vs. hare race.

Slighthly off topic: Who is actually buying all these PS2 that seem to be propping up the Sony financials? Surely these are not new gamers, but people replacing older (broken?) PS2? Are there any figures anywhere as to the demographic of PS2 buyers?

This is just the quite time of the year. E3 was a bit of a non-starter for everyone, and people are just beating their chests to keep the shareholders at the board happy and look as if their eye is still on the ball. I still think the PS3 is gonna clean up this Xmas (no kids please im not a ps3 fanboy, actually im a 360 owner) because it finally has some decent games coming out. Although i do wonder how much the increase in fuel, heating, credit crunch etc. is gonna hit Sony's refusal to lower the price and keep it aimed in the short-term as a premium product.

I think Woodins has hit the nail on the head and I think the big crunch point will be the price.

With everybody tightening the purse strings and with MS announcing another price decrease and upgraded harddrives as standard (eg Arcade version now complete with hard drive for same price). A lot of people will opt for a Wii as a family console and an Xbox for serious gaming. A lot of decissions will be based entirely on cost and not functionallity

Just my opinion

Dunno mate, still think the PS3 will eventually win, just through sheer fan loyalty (look at how passionate people are on this trade forum for instance).
