‘Wii 2’ in production, confirms Nintendo

Global President Iwata admits follow-up to next-gen system is ‘being worked on’

Nintendo fans rejoice – the next addition to the Japanese company’s family of home consoles may be here sooner than you think.

The platform holder’s president Satoru Iwata has admitted that the firm is hard at work on a follow-up to the all-conquering, motion-sensing system.

However, Iwata added that current designs having to "be thoroughly vetted" before being ready for market.

He commented:

“The hardware team started work on the next thing as soon as they were done with their previous project, but what they think up doesn't necessarily become a product.

“We only turn something into a product after it's been thoroughly vetted inside the company. We're not at a point where we can give specifics, but of course we're working on it.”

In the same interview with The Wall Street Journal, Iwata said that Mario creator Shigeru Miyamoto had completed all of his stated creations for the console – and added that the retail price of Wii MotionPlus would be “very affordable”.

Remember seeing something about this a while back when the Wii took the world by storm. Because of comments about the graphics Nintendo said that the next one will have graphics along the lines of PS3 and Xbox.

Look forward to this new one, hope they give out more info soon

Yeah, its pretty mucha giver that they're working on a new machine.

It'd just be nice this time if Nintendo went back to their roots and plumped for making for the most powerful machine on the market again, rather than one that barely is capable of running current gen games.

I feel a lot of multi-format publishers will feel that too as it held back the creative potentiala lot of 360 and PS3 games would have had.

Have you not read stories / seen videos from TGS? Check the facts before speaking nonsense.

I mean there IS one mind controlled game existing already. Ok not sure if it uses exactly brain "waves" but brain something at least since you need to concentrate to do the stuff required on screen by thinking of doing the actions.

I saw people trying it (in a preetty long segment) and it appears to be hard game but looks like the develoepers of the head thingy and the game are getting there since it really works.

I'll look for the link to the video on GameSpot later when I can afford the time for it. (Not sure if they have it still on the site since it was shown in a live show.)

If they don't have head tracking this time they are stoopid. There are so many things you can do with the tech they have, I for one have made a game where you play with flaming torches, fun fun fun but I don't think it'd work as a mass release. Lots of death... but head tracking for sure.

Wii 2?

I think Nintendo are going to play this one very close to their chest as I don't believe this is a new machine. It will be an iteration, just like the core > premium > elite or the PS3 60 > 40 > 80gb etc.

It will have a bigger hardrive as they have said space is starting to be a problem and it may have a few other quirks but I don't see them reinventing the chip as that would screw over their current games and while they could make one and enable a backwards compatibility with the original Wii that would just bump up the price and its low cost was one of its biggest selling points.

Hope they can make enough of them.

But they won't.

Zildjian and Nintendude are correct in what they are saying with the 'mind control interface' there is allready alot of development gone on into this new technology and it is allready being used and developed into buisnesses and such things like robots and NASA. There also is allready a simple game made...
the device retails from about $50 retail price so it is not an expensive piece of technology, but revolutionary to say the least! there has been other mind control interfaces made in the past but such devices required a gel or liquid substance to be applied for the signals to be picked up by the sensor. the sensor used in this device is a patented sensor thet requires no liquids or gels, but just bare skin (no hair) such as the forhead to beable to control the device...
the company who has come up with tihs is 'NeuroSky'
...here is a link

well, i hope that cleared a few things up for some people out there... it will be interesting to see what developers come up with...

the Wii 2 will just be another kiddie console, Nintendo better come up with something killer with a killer processor chip. I mean they made so much dow, on this little abortion. Why not conquer the world once and for all then?

Well it is news because many consoles and development teams get canned so i for one looked this up and thus got directed here. So news it is! I am looking to buy a Wii and was researching how long it is going to be before the next console (if any were to come out)
RE: way too many posts:
Mind controlled UI (User interface) is of course the way of the future, the slowest part of a computer is its UI, the keyboard and mouse have been around since the inception of the modern computer. However the issue is the ability to pick up more complex brain waves(feel free to surgically implant an amplifier in your head). I could spin off and write a lecture on it but i wont digress. There is a simple game made with it, its the old Alien invasion, look it up in the Guinness world record books for the highest score in a game using your mind. The technology has been around for a good decade+ i recall in Primary school(Australia here) going on an excursion to the local science/interactive place and doing an experiment with your mind controlling which way a globe spun in front of you. It took allot of concentration and some kids could not do it..
RE: 19
Seems theres lots of kiddies on here that dont recall the original NES, super NES and then the Nintendo 64 which DID have the world in its hand. The Wii is targeted at family and the younger teens, and is marketed thus. The buying power of this market is huge, much more then you might think! (recall how the world sold out of the Wii before Christmas) Nintendo simply couldn't manufacture enough consoles to deal with the demand.
P.S flame at will, i wont be coming back, just thought id clear up a couple of assumptions made in the previous posts.

If you ask me Nintendo should give their next system a darker look, something along the lines of the PS3, no wonder developers refuse to release any good games, Nintendo has always maintained that childish look, and feel to their system especially the gamecube/wii and if you ask me its getting old, point is if they want publishers to take them seriously they should start developing their own M rated franchise games.

Nintendo had suffered a lot during the previous 10 years. Every time they invent something, other companies just snatch it off. Example for those things are the rumble pack, the R & L shoulder buttons, motion sensing, wireless controls and many more. I think Nintendo is the reason why other consoles exist in the first place. It will take some time for Nintendo to reclaim its throne once again and I think it's on the right steps.

Nintendo Next Gen Game Console

IMO Nintendo should start from the ground up if they want to compete against Sony and Microsoft at the next gen video game level. At the moment the Wii do not have any HD support. Its CPU is just not powerful nor fast enough to support next gen graphics nor processing capacities. I think Nintendo should consider integrating Bluetooth technology into their next gen game console. Combine it with interactive motion sensor may just be enough to making it a Revolution that will blow its competitors away.

well i think that for the wii 2 to even have a chance in the modern world of game consoles it will have to have all of the functions of the x-box 360 and PS3 like HD compatebility and the large hard drives and also the multiplayer gaming via the internet but to also include the unique wii style with the motion-sensors and the highly likely 'bane wave' sensors but most of all it will be needing the next gen games not just mario and zelda but things like 'call of duty' and 'haze'

Hopes for Better Hardware

I hope Nintendo does up the graphics and processor power of their next console. The Wii had a very under-powered CPU and GPU. The CPU ran at ~700 MHz which is actually slower than the original X-Box. I think the Wii's motion-sensing hardware must have cost a lot, because it seems rather dumb to have the Wii so slow. Nintendo probably didn't want to take a chance at charging too much for the Wii and losing profits from the average household being unable to afford one. I'm sure if Nintendo wanted to, they could put in a fast CPU like the X-Box 360's and a better GPU too and sold the Wii at a higher price.

First, perhaps u are right that brain-technology has been highly developped, at least enough to p[roduce a game.....but even with that i dont think thats its ready for gaming consoles.....nintendo games are produced at a higher speed (dont start complaining...they do take their time and annoy us but not quite as long as it would require for such games.... besides i dont think that the current franchises would fit much at the CURRENT LEVEL of brain-sensing.... perhaps that technology would fit for wii 3 or higher.... also quit complaining about nintendo's games...they might look more childish than other games but thats because they are directed to a younger portion of gamers... and anyways they still have the top sales with the wii by FAR! I do agree though that although their games are fine they do need to work on their hardware..... faster internet connected games, more CPU, much much bigger drives, i remember having to send my wii for its drive to be replaced cause some of the launch wiis couldnt read double-layered discs such as SSBBrawl which had 9GB content instead of 4.5GB...and this prob will definetely occur to other games at the following years....they need to get there hardware, not just sufficient enough to work there own games but high enough to compare to other consoles....they should also know that follow-ups to 360 and PS3 wil have even higher quality hardware than their current and consider that when they release Wii2... after all this talking i conclude: I WANT WII2!!!!!!!!!!!!

seriously, all you guys talking about how the Wii needs to have more M rated games and all that garbage need to get a life! honestly! I mean, who cares that the Wii doesn't have a game where you can go around ripping peoples heads off or a game about some ridiculously advanced alien species that what completely unknown before coming in a destroying the human race for some unknown purpose! The only game that I would like the Wii to have that it doesn't is NHL 09, but after all you cant have everything. And that the Wii doesn't have the best graphics, who cares, thats the point of a video game, to be some outlandish, rediculously stupid imitation at life, just look at some the all time classic video games, Super Mario, tetris, pong, all of them, were simple, easy to use, weird looking, bad graphics games! yet lots of people even a few of you have probably played at least one of those.

I don't enjoy playing "hardcore" war games, etc, but I really think Nintendo lost this audience when it went for a simple family friendly audience. This for nintendo has been good from a business aspect, because let's face it wii just keeps on selling and half of the owners of wiis are babies. I have a wii and love it, but if Nintendo wants to succeed then it really needs to bridge the gap between the two audiences. Bring out some great games again, from old and new franchises. THEN STOP OTHER PUBLISHERS MAKING AWFUL PaRTY GAMES BECAUSE THEY JUST RUIN THE WII AND ITS FUN PHILOSOPHY! Then chuck in 360 standard HD graphics to satisfy the hardcore audience. Make the console more Internet based like the 360/PS3 and add features like viewing achievements from the menu. Put in a 40 gig hdd and don't make 50 different versions like microsoft - keep it simple!!! COMPLETELY Redesign the home menu and wii menu - I think both are a bit old looking. Forgot to mention - make sure hardcore gamers are pacified by getting COD etc. Finally, add in netflix compatability or something like that. The most important thing is to keep the price the same or lower - remember though that technology like chips becomes about half it's price each year, so from 2006 to 2010 (usual nintendo console lifespan) this technology should become just as affordable. I'm not too fussed about mind control stuff - its currently not advanced enough to be a realiable interface and it would just be a gimmick I think. make a sexier wii remote with built in motion plus. Make new nunchucks wireless (don't have both wired and wireless because that's not keeping it simple) and have a redesigned balance board.

And make sure you have a branding that appeals to everyone that nobody will hate, just like apple does. I mean come on have you seen adverts for wii games in the UK? They're shameful!!!!!!

Rant over.

Nintendo Wii

I just read this thread and a lot of good points are made regarding the Nintendo Wii system. I have been loyal to Nintendo since 1997 now as they do indeed make the best games. I would say that Nintendo are superior to both Microsoft and Sony in making their own games for their own systems. I have been really hurt to find that Resident Evil 5 will not be finding its way to the Nintendo Wii and alarm bells should be ringing. What Nintendo have never been great at is producing great consoles. They are very innovative but always seem to make basic mistakes. The Nintendo Wii is just not powerful enough to handle some of the games that are planned for release in the near future and people like myself with just the Nintendo Wii are going to miss out. I refuse to buy a Microsoft / Sony console as for me they have ruined the industry! I just hope that the next Nintendo release considers all possibilities and they get the console itself right for a change...

NIntendo should try and set up two consoles at once, the second one they dont need to put as money into but have more games that go to the gamers, and higher graphic capabilities.

The wii doesn't need uber perfect graphics to be a good system, or have a processor that makes patience obsolete. Many hardcore gamers started with the NES or SNES and that had terrible graphics. They still played the games didn't they? We need to not strive for a game that is so detailed and fast and perfect that it forgets to be fun. Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess isnt HD yet it is one of my favorite games, only topped by Ocarina of Time whose graphics would get it a 1/10 on its graphics nowadays. But people still know what it is and still play it. dont sacrifice fun for prettyness; you don't want the supermodel of videogames with no brain.

If they can expand the motion sensor to be more immersive - ie body accessories this could have amazing potential-could we even begin to see virtual headgear/semi virtual goggles which is surely the eventual medium as screens are inherently limited to 2d. This could also tap into the huge education industry (eg one could conduct a history lesson in a virtual world in real time). My whole reason for buying for the kids is to use it as a tool to help in their kinetic(movement/coordination) skills and not to encourage them to become sedentary, overweight zombies. Sure great graphics are good at first but gameplay value which is creative and thoughful is much more appealing in the longterm.
