‘Video games are terrorists’

Consoles as bad as ‘sexual predators’ for kids, reckons Christian newspaper
Oh dear. Just as this industry begins to believe that even the most ardent video games heathens have been convinced of the sheer joy of it all… the American Christian right shatters the illusion with a disgracefully entertaining attack, likening consoles to ‘terrorists’.
Making Anne Diamond look like Shigeru Miyamoto, Ron Luce – columnist for US newspaper The Christian Post – has compared the effect of youngsters having a console in their bedroom to ‘inviting a sex predator into your home’.
Luce (pictured) kicks off his stunning waterfall of nonsense with: “A man knocks on your door. As soon as you answer, you recognize him from the posters around town. He’s a known thief and sexual predator of young girls who has just escaped from prison.”
Personally, we’d shut the door there, but Ron persists: “He asks if he can go into your teens’ bedroom to hang out with them for a while. Of course you say, “No way!”… [But] if we, under any circumstances, wouldn’t let that man into the rooms of our kids (whether male of female) why would we let a computer reside in our kids’ bedrooms?”
The breathless barrage of idiocy continues: “You may be surprised at how many 'terrorists' there are in your home right now.”
Is it us, or are terrorists-in-inverted-commas even more frightening than the real deal? It kind of gives them an air of mystery they’ve up until this day been missing out on…
Before you have the chance to call the feds and put a padlock on your offspring’s vitals, however, Ron clarifies his heart-in-mouth statements: “Video games, computers, cell phones, teen magazines, music, TV, & movies: all of which fall under the umbrella of entertainment and all are likely perpetrators.
"Every time we let unsupervised media into our homes and into our kids' minds, we have invited in a terrorist.”
Scary stuff… but even scarier to consider that the piece was read by close to 150,000 North Americans this morning – not to mention those getting their fix online.
He continues:
“If you let the wrong things in, these terrorists will seduce your kids, impart harmful values and, in doing so, inject poison into your kids’ worldview that could follow them for the rest of their lives.” (Harmful values like questioning a strict Christian belief system, Ron?)
Unsurprisingly, he concludes the opinion piece by encouraging readers to “remove the terrorists from your home”.
Tell us what you make of it all below.

>Sure we could have afforded a dish or cable, but we didn’t want the world invading our home and taking our kids hostage.
Yes, heaven forbid they ever find out about a world outside their home. They might start thinking for themselves! We can't be having that, now.
Less flippantly, this is another case of a sensible idea being taken too far. We all see the value of parents keeping an eye on the media their children are viewing- but Mr. Luce seems to have missed the point and is more upset about the form ("TV", "music", "games") than the content ("sex", "violence", "the theory of evolution"), which is a very dangerous game to start playing.
Me, however? I'm going to start warning people about the devilries of newspapers. That'll learn him. :D

interesting article....aren't most wars (either internal or global) down to religion?....who is the terrorist now?
I suggest Ron looks at his own religion before he turns on media

I think that the use of the word terrorist is ill advised.
That said MCVs handling and 'quoting' of the article is shoddy and sensationalist - people can't be commenting enough on their articles.....
The author, Ron Luce, is commenting about the responsibility parents have. Sure, there is some rhetoric and his view is entrenched but it doesn't seem any different to the usual comments made by Christian or conservative family groups.
Oh and before anyone flames me: All three current consoles, two PC's, Cable, Laptop

@ Burner
Yes, his general jist of parents taking responsiblity for their children's media consumption is a good thing.
Unfortunatley, he reduces it down to sensationalist statements and religous rhetoric. Modern religion has no place in modern culture; not because reglion per se is a bad thing (although the antithesis of fanboys in religon are fanatics and we all know how childish and immature fanboys are – the same goes for fundementalists), it's just that they are trying to hang onto religion's purpose of social control, something that stopped being the case as soon as national police forces came into existance and science started disproving their assumptive theories of how things worked.

"‘inviting a sex predator into your home’."
Thats rich coming from a religion which has made enough news headlines in recent years because of the number of clergy that are child abusers!

Did anyone actually read the original article instead of MCV's take on it? After reading MCV, I was ready to write an angry missive to this person, telling him that parents need to take responsibility for their kids and not blame things like games, television, rock and roll, comic books, pinball, swing music, paperback books, the waltz (!) and everything else that has been blamed for the "downfall of youth" throughout history.
Turns out, the author agrees with me!
He said that kids in our culture are being bombarded by potentially damaging philosophies, and that television, computers, cell phones and videogames are ways that those messages are being carried into the home. He didn't single out videogames. In fact, he barely mentioned them.
In conclusion, he suggests that parents limit TV viewing and "screen the media your kids want to engage in before you let them do so. This includes T.V., movies, and music." What's wrong with that?
I suggest you all read the original article. I'm a life-long gamer with hundreds of consoles and thousands of games, and I let my kids play games -- but I pay attention to what they are doing. And I'm not naive enough to believe that popular culture has absolutely no affect on the values that kids develop -- their parents do need to pay attention to the messages they are given through TV, movies, music and...yes...even videogames.

Surely by making these accusations this man is encouraging mindless fear? Who's the terrorist NOW?

re :Mark Androvich
I did read the article on the 'Christian Post' website, and do agree with you in terms of the need to, as a parent, review what your kids see. As a parent myself, I am very aware of media content (on TV, games, press etc) and react accordingly.
To say Video games (media in general) are terrorists is wrong and a little hypocritical from a man whose religion (as someone pointed out) has been critised over years of priests being caught up on child porn/abuse.
MCV haven't helped by the quotes and not running the full story, but that said, its people like him (and his fantically supporters) who cause unnecessary problems and fear in general society. Those will half a brain will ignore him, unfortauntely there are many who will take him at his word.
The joys of the press and religion! Two more things that simpy don't mix well

Well if the quote in my previous comment appears in the article then quite frankly my point still stands whether or not ive read the entire thing.

Yes! Tonight's the night! At exactly 12:00 AM GMT all consoles and computers in your childrens bedrooms shall detonate, sending a pulsing shockwave of EVIL throughout the land! Moo hoo ha ha ha ha ha!
In all seriousness, though, come on. The simple fact is that "people" like Jack Thompson, Gordon Brown, and, indeed, Mr Ron Luce up there, are unwilling to actually look into the TRUE causes of violence and crime; human ****ing nature. I'm a good 90% sure Hitler and Jack The Ripper didn't play video-games, neither did the geezers who nailed Christ to a couple of bits of wood. And take a look at the bible: Full of violence, but not a single video-game. So, what, only violence in the last 30 years on a domestic level is caused by video games? Hmm. It's also very hypocritical, what with our governments constantly telling youths to join the Army, where they get to act out their violent fantasies for real. Usually against countries full of small brown children.
(sigh) For me, personally, if I DON'T play violent video games, I get way too tempted to haul off at these idiots with a shovel. It's cathartic for me, in a way. I'm 24 years old and I have never committed an act of violence that wasn't caused by ALCOHOL! The GOVERNMENT approved drug of choice! What, you'd rather have people getting drunk and hurting/killing each other in the streets than have kids sitting in their bedrooms shooting monsters? Stop passing the buck, stop blaming other people and other things, and REALISE: Kids are violent because WE are violent. As a species.
Okay, this rant-fest is at an end. Sorry, but it gets right on my pecs when humanity can't take responsibilty for its own actions, and has to ruin MY fun in the God-damned process.
Incidentally, anybody fancy their chances against me in TF2, come find Lord VileCore [PyRoNiclEs]. Bring a fire extinguisher >:D

firstly i have no problem with religion but:
What can i say these people simply confuse me,
What on earth make them think that parents will acknowledge a word he says, plus what he comes out with is aload of tripe anyway!
Who says god doesnt play games, he could be sitting in impatience waiting for the release of fable 2!
Again who decided that he is important enough for anyone to listen, is he a complete moron, does he not realise that just because he is religous he is not some superior god who all will follow,
People like this do my nut in
Luke
Can i also annotate this section of the guys words =
"If you let the wrong things in, these terrorists will seduce your kids, impart harmful values and, in doing so, inject poison into your kids' worldview that could follow them for the rest of their lives." (Harmful values like questioning a strict Christian belief system, Ron?)
So what he is saying EVERYONE is christian and therfore EVERYONE must not play games so EVERYONE can be christians and EVERYONE can generally die of bordem this isnt 100bc
You are a clueless muppet who is trying to send totally utter rubbish into the minds of people who do you think you are seriously, im fiftenn years old and find you a complete moron

So let me get this straight, as long as I just read the bible and get away from diffrent media, my brain won't be 'damaged' with sex and violence?
Wrong, the bible is full with both of them. And when I would go out in the streets, having gained only knowledge from the bible, people 'll find me a freak and use violence to 'teach me a lesson'.
If God approves the bible, then he loves videogames
