Microsoft exec says 60% of buyers have disowned Nintendo title as he hits out at ‘gimmicky’ peripherals
Microsoft will be very cautious in introducing new peripherals into the market for Xbox 360 – and has learnt from Wii Fit, which most consumers don’t play more than once.
That’s according to Xbox VP David Gosen, calling on Microsoft ‘research ‘that showed “60 per cent” of people who bought a copy of Wii Fit had only played it once.
He told MCV sister site Develop:
"What Nintendo have done with the Wii is truly fantastic – there is no question about it. But I think sometimes there is a thin line between gimmick and great gameplay," he told us after his talk.
"We’ve seen some research that says 60 per cent of people who bought a Wii Fit play it once and don’t play it again. So we have to get the balance right, because what we are doing is bringing new consumers into the market for the first time in their lives sometimes – and we have to treat them with respect.
"And at the end of the day that comes back down to creativity. We have to ensure that the peripheral strategy that anyone employs makes sense and delivers a truly game changing experience.”

Wonder if he sat in his office thinking "Wish we have thought of that first though"
Who did they ask in survery? Hardcore gamers?
Some probably dont use it again just like games.

ha ha ha, microsoft should just worry about their own console as its slips in sales, maybe their singstar and eye toy copy with help them eh, or their wii style remote,
well when bill gates started the company based on stealing ideas why stop there !!
we are a retailer and we have given up on wii fit we get 1 every 2 weeks and it goes straignt on amazon for double the retail price, why not, supermarkets will be more wii fit than us so make cash when you can!!!

Crazy. Microsoft insulting the master of originality that is Nintendo! But I think EA takes the cake for accusing other companies of putting out bad games that use licenses. Nobody needs a dumb game based on the latest superhero movie, but neither do they need a new freaking NHL and NFS every single freaking year.

I am sure there is probably a good corporate reason for all this sniping at Nintendo, but most Indie retailers would give up any Microsoft published game for a shop full of Wii Fits.

What's up David, regretting your move from successful Nintendo to average Microsoft?

I bought Wii Fit and played it a lot to begin with, but now it annoys me. I can't wait for an update disc. The trouble is that you can only select a single exercise at a time and this gets in the way of a keep-fit session as I have to select exercises manually. The ability to select multiple exercises before you start, and then run them in sequence would make me more likely to keep using the game.

usual Microsoft arrogance, and proof they have no idea when it comes to gaming...

Oh, bugger... Really must inform those customers who spent £70 on Wii Fit today that they'll be playing it only once.
This man is a turd... Arrogance beyond belief.

60% of gamers only use it once eh?
Good job Nintendo isn't just selling it to gamers then...
I'd estimate that most people get 6 weeks of constant use out of it the same as the two Brain Training titles, after that you just play it in odd bursts.
Everyone knows the Wii Board is only selling ready for 1080 Wii anyway. :)

"Gamers have given up on Wii Fit"...
Ha ha! Not as many as have given up on you Microsoft!
Last month in our store less than 10% of our total sales were Microsoft related.

As with all interviews / statements / comments from any exec employed by one of the key players they have to take one of 2 rules:
1) Big up new / next launch
2) Critique why competitor will fail with their new / next launch
Essentially it's all about posturing, with each of the players trying to frantically point score off each other as frequently as possible.
Also it's worth noting that the market research cited doesn't state how many people were interviewed, or what the profile of the interviewees were. As already commented, if it's a sample of 10 hardcore gamers you need only 6 to say 'played it once'. If it's a sample of 1000 interviews then I'll listen more closely.
Remember: Loyalty extends as far as the company named on the paycheque.

He's got a point.
Wii is one big gimmick...the only game that actually plays better on that console than others is Res 4.
Ive had 2 Wii's and sold them both for a profit and also a big laugh!!
Next Please

Er, thats your (and his) opinion, not others. Your post is totally pointless (also, like his).

'Once' is a little harsh, but he is kinda on the right lines. I know certainly in this house games have been bought by my non-gaming sisters, played for a short while then abandoned. 2 years ago everyone in my house was fighting over the wii, now i cant even convince them its a good idea to keep it in the living room, let alone to actually play the thing.
If the consumer plays it only once, thats the consumers problem not nintendos. They still get the cash after all. Its hard to tell when Sony or Microsoft are make claims looking down their noses at nintendos casual sucess if they are jealous of the popularity of something which costs so little to make and sell or if they genuinely care about gaming as more than a profit generation exercise.
....Damn..it felt weird typing that.

its true many customers have expressed it, they brought the wii fit as the gimmick and hype but they dont use it anymore and alot of people say the same about the wii
Microsoft research is pretty spot on, whilst Im not a fan boy (own all 3 consoles and just game for good games) I have to say this year Microsoft are pretty on the ball witht here generation machine, last gen though WTF were they playing at lol
