Expanded closed beta opens in Europe as Sony invites gamers to apply for service

Consumers are another step closer to experiencing PS3 Home, as Sony allows users to submit an application to join the service today.

Later today, the PS Store will be updated with a Home theme which, when downloaded, lets users submit an application to join the Home Beta test community.

Sony’s official blog reports: ‘We will be using a variety of criteria including activity on the PlayStation Network to determine eligibility for the Beta community. Existing beta testers have automatically qualified to be part of the expanded beta.

‘We’re really excited about this milestone and want our most loyal fans to be a part of the evolution of PlayStation Home.’

In Europe, SCEE is beginning their expanded closed Home beta. The firm is directly targeting consumers who have been most active on PSN and PlayStation Store, emailing these handpicked consumers with an invite to join.

Are you sure it's ready Sony?

I can see this going horribly wrong, allowing the fanboys to tear it to pieces.

Why do we in Europe have to hear about SCEE's expanded beta program from SCEA's blog? Surely Three Speech should have had something first?

No, they're doing it differently. As it says at the bottom of the piece, if they're interested in you they'll let you know.

I can also understand why TS don't post things like this due to the number of morons that'll have a go at them because they're annoyed at Sony.

@1: Well this is Sony and we all know that "shafted" and "Europe" are the most common word pairings with them. They'll be hunting for people who aren't likely to find fault with it, which is why I suspect they are using online usage as a guideline.

They will consider that low online usage = dissatisfaction with the console. And they'd be right, the only time I really go online is to get "another" System Update, so I'd fall into that category. Although I did get some extra content for EGWT and SSHD last week. I don't think that ramped up the online hours though.

Ah well, at least it will let some more people find out why this thing is taking so long. We also might finally get some honest assessments on the service, the "we love Sony" brigade in the US aren't the most reliable of sources for honest opinions. Europeans seem to find speaking their mind a bit easier.

Then of course, we can all look forward to the 20?? release date... It'll probably be a PS4 launch title.

Surely this should have been posted yesterday, as the theme was released on the 7th not the 8th.

So, if I get this right, Sony are basically saying to the many many gamers and buyers of the console that are so far disatisfied with it or have found little to interest them on it - "get lost" ? Sony ought to invite every owner on PSN to join to make up for the appaling way Sony has treated us in Europe i.e. Dual Shock six months late and 25% higher, 80gb nearly a year after the USA, Rock Band scrubbed for Europe, etc

Can people read?

Nowhere does it say Sony are picking people who spend the most time on PSN.

They could mean that they're picking people who are online at specific times of the day regularly.

Why didn't they just copy google the full way. An invite system would've been a great idea. You invite your friends onto the network so that you can try using the features with people you know. Instead its going to be a small community of strangers . . . so who was the brains behind that?

Have you guys never done beta testing??? they are using the users psn activity because beta testers need to be on the console as much as posible testing it for hours on end why on earth would they pick users who rarely use the system (yes they may only use it rarely because they have no good games) but sonydont know that they only know the user rarely goes on that could be due to the owner being too busy or not a gamer person and not interested. i see the method they used as the logical sensible and ONLY way they could do it other than simple letting everyone join. anyone who disagrees is just anoid they odnt use they playstation enough to qualify (and before you say it im no ps3 fanboy and hardly evr use my ps3 either) sorry to run on but reading all this nonsense about how they only picked users because they dont want it to be really tested is just completley stupid yes stupid why on earth would they want another patch 2.40 problem or worse

I hear than Sony are only sending invites to people who live in America. If so I wouldnt be surprised becuase Sony has a great way of cutting slacking of European users. I mean common, they provide us with no more of the great 60gb consoles and now they perhaps are only sending invites to PS3 users in the SECAM region.

I really don't understand the way Sony cooperates and do there stuff. I feel its time they need to reduce there prosponing and get more and better games. Tts bad enough PS3 has got less gaes than Xbox, we should atleaste have had Home by now to satisfy our gaming needs.

Im sorry but I myself am I great big fan of Sony, it is a great compnay but with a pathetic service!

Anybody with news please add my PSN ID: Eccentric88
