Microsoft unveils new 60GB 360

Bigger hard drive introduced in standard SKU from August 15th for no extra cost

The standard Xbox 360 will now come with three times the hard drive capacity from August 15th, for the same £199.99 price point.

Microsoft’s new 60GB standard SKU will be introduced from this Friday (August 15th) as the platform holder steps up its battle with rival PS3.

“No one device offers the depth and breadth of entertainment that Xbox 360 can deliver and we know consumers need increasingly more and more space to store the amazing digital entertainment content we provide,” said senior regional director, entertainment and devices division at Microsoft Neil Thompson.

“Now the Xbox 360 has triple the space to house all your entertainment needs at no extra cost.”

The move means that Microsoft’s line-up of consoles will now consist of the Xbox 360 Arcade, which comes with a 256MB memory unit and five Xbox Live Arcade games for £159.99, the standard Xbox 360 with a 60GB hard drive for £199.99, and the Xbox 360 Elite, whch boasts a 120GB hard drive £259.99.

If you ordered at the weekend, they will not be shipping until Monday night. I am sure you would be allowed to cancel. This announcement seems to have taken everyone by surprise.

i agree xbox just seem to be trying anything to reinvent them selves, the 60 gig are not out, just called gem and they have not even been told, even when they do release it wont increase sales for us, people are not happy about all the accessories and the £40 online fee, plus 360 is a dvd player no HD player, only upscales to HD, your dvd cant play hd can it ? wii/ds is still selling the most

I agree with the others Lee you need to vent your frustrations directly to Microsoft rather than this pointless ranting. First and foremost it is a news piece and while I appreciate that everyone is going to have different views or react differently this is not the place for fanboy Rants.
Sorry!

Just for the record we didn't order 10 20g 360's at the weekend, that was my collegues idea of 'wit'.

And Lee, if people aren't happy with 'all the accessories' etc.. in your store then you're obviously not doing a very good job and clearly don't believe in the product, which to my mind is bad business.

now come on, im a retailer and even i can see that xbox are expensive for extras, i mean the hd prices are terrible,
i want all my products to sell, but the 360 has slowed down, and other platforms are selling alot more, what ever console you love, MS 360 has now been out 3 years, and its starting to show, i wish i was selling 100's of 360 consoles each week the truth is im not, wii fit and ds lites are the main sellers, with ps3 after this, but august isnt the month for games on any console is it.

how about the freedom of the content publisher to have control over what is posted to their website? Freedom of speech is all well and good, but this would turn into a fanboy flame fest if mcv didn't delete some of the worst comments...

"360 has now been out 3 years, and its starting to show"

What a ridiculous statement, and one that doesn't reflect my business at all. No offense, but I'm rather happy that some of you lot don't work for me with such negative attitudes.

Again i have to agree, as a retailer i have also just found out about the new 60gb console and although a shock i glad, it may help boost what has been quite a slow start to the month. With the recent anouncement from Sony re the 80gb console EVERYONE is holding out for so 40's not selling.
I dont hold a lot of stock of 20 gigs atm again as is slow and whats thepoint.

So great news, the only people i feel for are the customers who have just purchased a 20gig console.
But these things have happened before and will happen again in retail, having been an indie now for over 15 years not much surprises me anymore.

Lets put another spin on this. How do people see this move affecting sales of the Elite console? Instead of getting 100gb of extra space, the difference is only £40 yet the price difference remains the same...

I'm not a fanboy, just an interested observer who thinks it would make more sense to work on improving the Elite offering at the same time as any other SKU. That way it shows they believe Elite (most valuable to retailers and Microsoft) is the best option for customers instead of de-valuing their product...NOW DEBATE..!!!

@ Boris. The difference is £60 between the pro and elite, the gig difference is 60gb and what about the hdmi lead, the optical dongle, the different colour etc? Would you still prefer everybody to still be playing Atari 2600's or pong on there Binatones on black and white TV's? Its called progress - its as cheap now (if not cheaper?) to source 60gb 2.5" drives as it is 20's so why bother to complain? Maybe you should be asking why the Elite doesn't come with a 180gb drive now?

I have a friend who just bought a 20gb pro a week ago, not gonna be happy. Wouldnt it be better to reduce the 20gb to replace the arcade?

Is anyone aware of any future HD upgrades that you can purchase later?

Like will it be possible to upgrade the Hd to a 100GB anytime soon or are they keeping a limit because of their heating problems?

Also is it possible for PS3 to upgrade HD?

This console improves on nearly every problem the 20gb had. Less noise, a lot less noise, i had to check mine was still on . red rings and overheating have been cut down and supposedly it uses less energy then the 20Gb. It shows that microsoft are taking feedback and improving it.
