MadWorld controversy reaches The Sun

Wii ‘faces killing rap’, says UK tabloid

Yesterday’s astonishing attack in The Daily Mail on Sega’s Wii title Madworld has gathered momentum – with both Metro newspaper and The Sun following suit.

The Sun today offers a headline of ‘Wii faces killing rap’, under which it references the game as ‘ultra-violent’ – reporting that ‘watchdogs’ had urged for the game to be banned.

The paper adds:

‘MadWorld lets players impale enemies on road signs, rip out their hearts and execute them with chainsaws and daggers.

‘It is made exclusively for the Nintendo Wii — and looks set to wreck the popular console’s family-friendly image.’

The tabloid quotes John Beyer of MediaWatch-uk, calling for the BBFC to refuse to classify the game. Beyer was also featured in the Mail yesterday.

Like the Mail, the newspaper makes no reference to Rockstar’s Manhunt 2, due for release on Wii later this year.

....But ive not even heard of this game! Im pretty much up to speed with all thats going on in the gaming world, but I have to be honest, im super confused with this one. I've tried to find it on youtube, even google isn't coming up with anything! Im thinking this could be a hoax, there's been several over the years, media spin is a powerful thing.

If anyone has info on this game I would love to hear some!

I'm getting rather peeved at people telling me what games they think are going to be bad and what ones I cannot play. I know the line between reality and fantasy why don't they? Until it actually happens aren't they talking about a hypothetical reality which is inded fantasy. Look at all the other games people have mentioned which are supposed to be bad, nothing has come from it.

Another example of blame the media and not take responsibility for our decisions. If you don't want the game, don't buy it. It's clearly an M rated game, and I don't see how it "ruins" the family friendly image at all. RE4, RE Chronicles, House of the Dead 1&2, Manhunt 2, etc. are all M rated and I do not see them "ruining" the image either. I guess though this is good for the game, going on history. It'll probably sell way better than it would've normally.

IT HAS A AGE RATING FOR GODSAKE!!!!! Kids cant play it if parents USE the parental controls on the Wii console itself block 15+ 18+ etc!!!
And the Wii shouldn't be painted as Family Friendly its a console for everyone!!

I'm pretty sure Nintendo will absolutely LOVE this coverage. After a lukewarm E3 criticising it's sickly sweet, "family-friendly" image and lack of any 'core gamer' titles, this might be just the tonic for a jaded gamer-base.

If these newspapers bothered to do any research, they'd realize that MadWorld was set in a totally fantasy world, in fact, it's actually set inside a videogame. Yes, graphically it's gloriously gory, but no more so than the likes of anything Frank Miller has ever drawn. And (as it's been said many times before) it's going to have a freakin' '18' certificate on the box, so if kids end up playing this, it's gonna be the same old "blame the parents" situation (and quite right too).

Why does the media refuse to accespt that games, no matter how violent and visceral, are just another form of entertainment, and it's up to us if we want to play and enjoy them or not.

Basically, Daily Mail, Sun and Metro - GET OVER IT!!

I'd like to take a moment to thank the Daily Mail, the Sun and all the others for bringing this game to my attention. Prior to this coverage I'd never even heard of MadWorld, much less had any interest in it, but now as a result of their shrill, high-profile coverage, this is definitely a game I'll be keeping an eye on.

I wish they'd hurry up and ban those shops that sell both cigarettes and alcohol AND children's comics and sweets. Also please stop releasing horror films and porn on DVD - children have DVD players you know!!!

The papers adopt this aproach with all news, tapping into people's prejudice whether it's obesety, musilms, immigration, celebrities, or in this case, video games. I imagine there's more than one or two people here who have 'agreed' with an article in some tabloid paper because it fits in with your own ideas and prejudices.

Well, if the parents don't want their kids to have it, then they don't have to buy it for them! Personally, I hate Wii (Sold mine) because of no good titles. Now to make up for it, they come up with something so gory it doesn't even look fun, but still, it's an effort, and if it's a blow against Nintendo, they deserve it.

Ha, I love how utterly stupid some people can be. Until kids who constantly play MadWorld suddenly re-enact Columbine with an ironic 'caution' sign, they need to STFU. Although the controversy is brilliantly entertaining - it's a bit like self-satire.
