EA sets sights on becoming leading sports brand

Peter Moore says label can overtake Nike and Adidas in public eye

Peter Moore has told MCV that he is aiming to make the division “the leading brand in sports” – eclipsing Nike and Adidas.

Speaking as we crowned him an ‘MCV Legend’
, EA Sports president Moore said his current aim is to make his employer more recognisable than the biggest names in sportswear and apparel.

“EA has had an extremely successful sports brand for years, but we’re evolving with new experiences targeting new consumers in our space,” he said.

“There’s a hunger that fuels our teams to challenge to be the leading sports brand in the world.”

Moore laid out his masterplan for the EA Sports brand. He added: “We need to knock down the barriers to those who find the learning curve of our games too steep, and find new areas in sports – and health and wellness – that our brand can truly make a difference.”

Moore recalled both the highlights of his working life – not least the fanfare-dominated launch of Xbox 360 – and the most difficult day of his career: when he was forced to accept that production of Sega’s Dreamcast needed to cease.

Come back down to earth Moore, EA SPORTS is NOT a sports brand, its a gaming brand and will always be. You place an EA Sports branded sports top next to a Nike, Umbro, Adidas, hell even Tesco Value, I know which one I would NOT buy

Ambition is a great thing, but I think he needs to take a step back and focus on his software!

Having read the article, but before reading the comment, I was discussing exactly this question with the guy next to me at work, and we both came to a quite different conclusion:
he's an ABA boxer, and he says he would definitely and happily wear an EA branded vest or equipment in training - a la FHR3 - and I agree with him 100% speaking from the POV of a club golfer. Nike & adidas are sports powerhouses yes, but I'd say EA can credibly threaten the likes of Umbro, Fila pretty soon. Tesco value sports is an intriguing concept...

I play in an amateur football league and coach my sons football team who are in Dision 1 in their county. I/we would wear EA branded sports clothes i.e. tracksuit, warm up t shirts etc as it is a recognised brand and is credible enough for for us to have no problems wearing the items.

Every brand has to start somewhere so if EA want to use us guinea pigs we'll happily wear all they want to throw at us :)

of course you would, because it'd be free...

I don't know whether this is something that would work at a retail level... Good luck to them tho.

The one thing EA have always been better at than most of the rest of the industry is marketing, so if the approach this correctly they can probably pull it off.

Well they totaly suck at making a football game that represents the real thing. If they spent less time running their mouths and focusing on quality his words might mean something. All those other brands better look out, EA won't make a better product, but they will buy every exclusive license that they can. Why make a better product when you can just put everyone else out of business.
