No PS3 price cut at Leipzig

Platform holder rules out announcement from its ‘blockbuster’ promises

Sony will not announce a price cut to its flagship PlayStation 3 games console at the Leipzig trade expo next week, the company has confirmed.

"It's not going to happen. If you're coming for that you'll be disappointed," Sony Computer Entertainment spokesman Nick Caplin told Reuters.

SCEE president David Reeves had previously told MCV that the firm is planning “blockbuster” surprises for the show.

The Leipzig games fair runs from Thursday, August 20th – 22nd.

Yeah, maybe with number 2, but not the first comment. When the basic model costs twice as much as the the basic 360, it is far too expensive (and before you start getting pedantic, I know the Arcade doesn't have a hard drive but we're talking about the perceptions that Joe Bloggs will have)

Worth every penny in my opinion. I've owned a PS3 pretty much since launch, and initially wasn't impressed for the money I paid (£299, 40 gig). As time has gone by though, I've found myself using it much more than usual due to their firmware updates adding further functionality and the release of decent titles, and prospect of upcoming titles and services etc.

I do think I will eventually need an HD upgrade. Around £50 for 250 gig is well worth it. From what I understand it doesn't invalidate warranty to upgrade either.

I was once a dedicated PC only gamer, and having spent FAR MORE money upgrading my PC each year to play the latest games only for the new hardware to be out of date within a month or two, and unable to play the next big release, I think those people looking for a gaming platform look no further than the Playstation 3 or XBox 360 in my opinion. The money makes sense.

Yes, for a family looking for a console for their kids etc, I would agree it is a little excessive. In that particular case, buy a Wii.

Yes it's to expensive, Yes it needs a huge price cut, Yes it has more features built in than the 360 all of which I'm bored of and finally I'm fed up of being ripped off by the price of bluray movies and games that just don't feel right.
Like many my friend thinks they are the mutt's right now as he's playing my PS3 which I was lucky enough to have sold him for a good price and I'm happy now after jumping ship after 9 years to Xbox 360.

It's still the most impressive bit of machinery on the market you can get for it's price. if you want top of the range, look no further.

i really can't see them dropping the price for a while. it just costs too much to manufacture such a high end peice of hardware. for the reletively high price you get so much.

some people won't like it, but thats why competition exists.

For me, and 15million others, the PS3 is worth it. absolutely. to many others its not.

I have only this to say,

Microsoft Xbox 360 Pro £199.99 (60gb)
Sony Playstation 3 £299.99(40gb/80gb)
A console that actually works PRICELESS!

very funny but you obviously have no real idea about the 360. yes there was a problem (despite me still having my original 360 from 2+ years ago with no issue) but that has all but been resolved and even if you have a problem with a 3 year warrenty and roughly a 2-3 week turn around I dont see that a problem.

You seem to be forgetting totally about the " BRICKED" consoles from the dodgy 2.40 update for one - thats really a console that works.

As I have said on other threads I've always loved Sony but other than if I want a Blueray player - What does the PS3 ave to offer that the 360 can't do equallyas good or in some cases better. (and yes I own both consoles and even I can't answer this question) - being mindful that forgetting th blueray it needs to be a difference worth over £100

Let me know and maybe I'll change my view !!!!!

@ Hnbeanz... I'm a fanboy? I don't own any of the current consoles, and stated that since PS3 is still super expensive I won't be buying one... How does that make me a fanboy? What planet do you come from?

@10

No, it doesn't make you a fanboy, it makes you a tight wad. £299.99 for a 80gig PS3 with a excellent blu-ray player and a Dual Shock 3 as standard is great value for money.

I'm confused by all the posts on this article?!

Did Sony announce a price drop and then retract it?

Have sales on the PS3 hardware stiffed?

I'm pretty sure its a 'no' on both those questions. Correct me if I'm wrong.

So whats the big deal?

I think people were just reacting to the fact the price has not been reduced when it really needs to. Especialy as the experts are predicting that Blue Ray is not going to accepted/has not been accepted into the Market the same as DVD and it is only sales of PS3 to Gamers keeping the format alive at present.

The conversation has then degraded into the same drival about fanboys and XBL v PSN.

My post at no 9 was in the hope someone could help and describe realistically to people why (forgetting the Blueray) the PS3 is worth the money without going into free PSN v XBL. Come on guys forget the "mines bigger than yours" and have a sensible discussion

I luv my PS3 but I seriously struggle when people ask justifying the price over the 360 which at present I consider to be the better console for online gaming. Thats just my opinion.

I agree... Atm nothing about the PS3 justifies the price, which is simply why I said I would not be buying one just now.

I've played all 3 consoles and they all have merrit but the PS3 fails to edge out any of it's competitors... yet.

I say 'yet' because the PS3 looks like it has some great releases GT5 (although I was pretty disappointed with prologue), Socom etc etc. I also got quite into Pixel Junkie (Tower Defence), 2 player was pretty addictive. But nothing that will make me part from my money.

So no, I'm neither a fanboy nor a tight-wad, I guarantee the PS3 will drop in price, maybe then I'll buy one, unless 'Starwars' feels like sending me one?

Maybe I was a little hasty on the fan boy reply, more aimed towards @2. Hey, if you can't afford £300 on a luxury item then fair dues.

I think the comments about PS3 being free to play online are hilarious.
Last year i bought 10 games on my xbox 360
Most 360 games cost £40 so that's £400 (woah i spent that much)
In all the shops where i live PS3 games cost £45-£50
so thats £450 for 10 PS3 games.
Xbox live costs £35 a year, so i think you will find xbox is cheaper cause ive just saved 15 quid so mwha
