Too Human trilogy ‘very exciting’, says Microsoft

Platform holder confirms planned series is still very much alive; Compares story to Star Wars and LOTR

Microsoft has confirmed to MCV that it is committed to releasing a trilogy of Too Human games – and compared the narrative pull of the story to Star Wars and Lord Of The Rings.

Reviews have begun to come in for the first title online, from sites such as IGN, GameSpy, GameSpot, 1Up, CVG and Eurogamer – and Microsoft’s head o gaming and entertainment Stephen McGill has said that the firm is “very excited” by the franchise’s prospects.

He told MCV: “Microsoft Game Studios and Silicon Knights are committed to finishing the first instalment, but Too Human is an overarching epic with a rich and vast game universe that cannot be told in one instalment.

“This game will begin the saga of the god Baldur in the narrative tradition of classic trilogies, such as Star Wars and Lord Of The Rings. We will talk about the full trilogy and we are very excited about its potential.”

While I am excited to know that the TH trilogy is coming, I think people should finally realize that LotR is not a trilogy; it is one book that was divided into three by the publishers.

Currently 68% on metacritic, so unless sales exceed reviewers' response, the commitment to a trilogy may wither away.

68% on metacritic? Denis Dyak won't be pleased, he thinks he's game is the second coming. Pity no one else does.

Yeah sadly, from what i've seen and heard, this game doesn't do anything for me, I think the trilogy idea will go out the window after it's released. It'd be pointless if it doesn't sell.

Game's pretty fun and honestly, I'm sick of people comparing it to PS2 graphics. I sound like a fanboy, and that makes me want to kill myself with something sharp in a decided emo way, but does anyone actually remember how horrible the in game graphics on the ps2 were in comparison to the 360? The entire game is run in real-time and it looks like a cut-scene from even some of the best ps2 games. Honestly, you have to play the game for more than 5 minutes, and it's not going to be for everyone, but it's not as bad as a lot of the reviewers are saying. I just wish people would give it more of a chance. It's going to be exactly like crash said Advent Rising all over again. Advent Rising was great except for a few design flaws, but because it was overshadowed by games like Halo 2 at the time it was given horrible reviews and thrown into the gutter, it's sequals and ports never to be heard from again. It was travesty for all the action-adventure gamers in the world, and I'd rather not see it happen again. Thanks for the partial read and you may now begin to call me a fan-boy and make fun of my opinion as is internet tradition.

No one is going to call you a fanboy, your just clearly a fan of the game, at the end of the day it's one persons opinion. Maybe your right, maybe people aren't giving it much of a chance. We'll see how it fairs in the next couple of months.

If you look at games like Gran Turismo 4, God Of War, Resident Evil 4 to name just a few PS2 titles Too Human's visuals, while better, aren't leaps and bounds ahead of said games and they're certainly not on par with a lot of the 360 top titles. Personally my gripe is the somewhat 'been there done that' game play. Considering how long this game has been in developement it's hardly the ground breaking next-gen title its been plugged as, it certainly doesn't live up to Dyaks inflated opinion of his game, it is, as I say, all a bit 'meh'.

I would say that the graphics are typicial of this gen (shiny, lots of fancy visual effects) but would have to say that teh animation is where the game looks dated (Oblivion suffers the same problem IMO).

I have played the demo a couple of times as I coudln't tell if it was a good game or not, and would have to say that it is average. Especially as it is meant to be only 10 hours long, what kind of RPG is that?

As for Microsoft comparing it to LOTR or Star Wars....what crack are they smoking?

Guys you really need to give this game a chance. Its awesome to play online via co op, there are so many different items and the story is great.

As far as the combat goes you have to get used to it. Its really very simple and fun. You can make characters and play with a friend or anyone over live with your character, when you level up your character stays leveled up and you can replay any area with anyone.

This game may have some flaws but it is revolutionary in some areas, any RPG fan would be missing out if they never tried the game. And the retail copy of the game is much better than the demo, trust me on that.

Sorry mate but it's common knowledge that 99% of the time demo's are always a good representation of the finished product, and given that the reviews have been done using the finished game then it's a fair assesment that Too Human falls short of the mark. I've no doubt that there are a few great moments in there, but a few moments don't make a video game. Looking at the reviews, and having played the demo, it's clear that there are better games out there and on the horizon, than Too Human

Seriously, most of the reviewers are way off on this one. I have played for three days now and there is nothing like it. The demo didn't show how crazy the battles get later on. The story is good and the co-op is a blast.
If you like Dungeon Crawlers (e.g. Diablo 2) and are open minded enough to learn a new control scheme, then this is the game for you. Also, you have a lot more moves than the reviews say. You have Juggle moves, Fierce moves, Finishers, Ruiners, and Battle Cries. Not only that but you have a Spider move that drops a turret and starts shooting missles out of the air and starts shooting the enemies. You have Swords, Hammers, Staffs, Rifles, Duel Pistols and Cannons. To a loot whore, this game is off the charts. To a FPS fan, this is not your thing.

I sincerely hope they continue with the trilogy. As critical as most reviews have been, I found it to be a thoroughly enjoyable game. I would say it falls short of being a hard core RPG like KOTOR or Mass Effect, since you have little free choice in the story, but in terms of equipping and leveling your character it's within their range. And concerning the graphics, I found them comparable to Mass Effect, which certainly has sufficient graphics to be considered a great game. Likewise, the camera work, which has been criticized in several reviews I read, really didn't impede on the game. On review went so far as to say the camera couldn't handle backtracking - which is simply incorrect, as I did quite a bit of that.
I won't go so far as to say that the game is revolutionary, but I really came to like the control scheme. Granted, it is difficult at times to focus on specific targets in a crowd, but I think the freedom it provides to rapidly change targets and directions in melee while allowing the buttons and triggers to be freed for other uses make a significant innovation that more than makes up for the periodic imprecision. I think a lot of the criticism is rooted in Dyak's saying this will be a top-notch action game and top-notch RPG, when it's a little soft on the RPG end since you aren't immersed and in control of the choices and conversations of Baldur, and it plays more like Prince of Persia combat than a hard-core action game or shooter.
On top of that, I will unreservedly commend the story. It may not be for everyone, I suppose, but I love the adaptation of Norse mythology. Mythology is how humanity first began telling stories of meaning, and the best epics are closely tied with that foundation (Star Wars and Lord of the Rings being perhaps the two most prominent epics that directly rooted themselves in mythology). Norse mythology holds a particular fascination for me, as the fact that the gods can die, will die, know they will die and yet continue to fight adds a dynamic to the mythos that is lacking in it's Mediterrainean counterparts, and I feel that SK has done an outstanding job adapting the mythology to their setting.
All in all, I found it a very enjoyable game with moderate replay value. My biggest problem is that Dyak has this ridiculous idea that people only want a 12-15 hr game....
I'll be sorely disappointed if the trilogy doesn't continue... but if such a misfortune were to come to pass, hopefully Dyak will have the wits to sell the movie rights for the Too Human intellectual property so they can finish their story.

I've been playing TH all week as well,

While the story is pretty good (mainly as its basically stealing off Nordic Folklore) the levels are just too damn long and repetitive and the fact theres no consequences for dying, you spawn again a dew feet behind where you died makes the game a bit uneventful

and the camera control is a pain in the arse. it's impossibly to face an enemy when your being chased.

Guru Larry,

There is a penalty for death, you damage your equipment and you have to watch a 20 second cutscene that covers the load for your revival.

The camera acts as a radar. It focuses on your greatest threat. If something is behind you, then there is something more dangerous ahead of you. Plus pushing up or down changes the camera. There are five to choose from, so i am sure you can find one you like.

In general, it's a Dungeon Crawler. When viewed in it's correct context the game makes more sense and is a lot more fun. Replayability is a big factor in games these days and this game has it. I have played long after I beat the game (like 30 hours more) and I am still having fun with my friends in co-op.

when i played the demo my friends were telling me this game was garbage becuase they culdnt get used to the controls, i am so glad i did not listen to the reviews or my friends because i would not hav picked up this game. it is truely a fun game, once you get used to the controls camera and all that fun stuff you can really enjoy it. i kinda didnt like that the game abruptly ended becuase i didnt know this was going to be a trilogy so i was like wtf!!! but its all good, this game on coop is fun as hell and it would be a shame if the story ends at the first part because ppl dont give it a chance. its not revolutionary but its still worth a try.

I thought the game was okay, but the fact that level appearance and the different monsters you're fighting are the only differences in anything.. gets kinda repetitive, and I don't know if its just me, but the fact that there seems to be no long term penalty for dieing makes it seem like you die WAY more in this game than in others, that long respawn time hurts, especially when you're fighting a huge mob that immediately kills you again in a few seconds, not what I'm looking for in a sigle player game... respawn time is ok on multiplayer games sure.... but not when you're by yourself. The levels design could use some work too. It suffers the same problem that fabel did... with the "go here" mentality of the levels. I'm not a fan of that.. guess I've been playing elder scrolls games too long.
The multitude of items in the game is its strong point IMO though. I love games where I can find new stuff all the time. Also the co op mode is sweet.. more rpgs need to incorporate something like that. My only wish is that there could be more people in a single game... do the ol' Diablo 2 "Baal run" on a boss.
The story, while being well thought out and in depth was not to my liking. I personally feel that it's lacking somewhere.. like they didn't know where to start and just went with something. It seems like the whole Norse gods thing didn't really fit in to me. Sure if it was set to back in the time of the vikings, but it being futuristic is no good.
All in all I enjoyed playing through this game with my friends.. but after playing it a couple days, I now grow bored with it pretty quick.. I would be interested in seeing the trilogy released, but only to play through the rest of the story to tell the truth. This game doesn't seem to have the replay value that other games do.

Despite minor flaws, such as the obtrusive and occasionally annoying camera angles and the difficult targeting process, Too Human is a very interesting game with an immersive story, incredible numbers of items, great graphics (though not as good as Gears or Halo 3), and simple, but fun and addicting gameplay that kept me hooked through the 11 hour campaign. Online co-p is quite fun, and the concept of keeping the same hero through all 3 games in the trilogy has never been done before and is quite cool. FPS junkies wont like this, but RPG fans should definitly take a look. Don't give up if you dont like it at the start, just keep playing for 1 or 2 hours and see if you get a feel for the controls andoncept.

This game isn't for everyone. But i would like to make a few statements. 1. this game has not be in "development" for 10 years. The idea for a game called "too human" has been around but Silicon Knights has not been developing this game for that long. 2. Regarding the graphics issue. Silicon Knights had to build there own Engine halfway through the production of this game due to a lawsuit with Epic over the use of their engine. Give SK and Too Human a break. If they are allowed to continue with a second game I would be willing to bet it will be much better than the first.

I find it amusing how the proponents of Too Human use sound reasoning while the vast (can't stress enough how vast) majority of opponents use nothing but hyperbole and gross generalizations. There is no arguing with these people, for if they understood the reasoning behind the argument they wouldn't be bashing the game in the first place. Every thread I visit it's the same thing. The smartest posts are for it and the utterly ignorant posts are against it. Hell, let them continue. They're practically stating that only dumb people hate this game.
