Xbox 360 sold out in Japan

Console’s popularity rockets in Far East as Namco Bandai RPG does the trick for Microsoft

Microsoft has announced that Xbox 360 has sold out across Japan, following increased demand for the console.

As reported on MCV, the system outsold PS3 in the territory for the first time last week, largely thanks to the release of Namco Bandai RPG Tales OF Vesperia.

A Microsoft Japan press release sent out yesterday reads:

‘We truly thank you for all your patronage in the past.

‘Currently, the Xbox 360 is sold out, and retailers are unable to restock their supply. This is a result of our own sales targets being exceeded by the actual customer sales. We deeply apologize for this inconvenience to our customers, retailers and business partners.

‘Here at Microsoft, we are moving forward quickly with console production, and plan to ship the standard Xbox 360 model out this September. Furthermore, we will sequentially be shipping out the Elite and the Arcade models. We ask that you please patiently wait until the console is shipped.

‘We truly thank you for your patronage hereafter.

...I expected a boost in sales, but not for them to actually sell out. Mind you, Microsoft probably wern't expecting this in the slightest.

That's great news for everyone except Sony... Are we getting this game on the 29th?

Is definately good news for Microsoft and the fact they have sold out is significant, however although they outsold Sony I would doubt there were significant levels of stock held on hand in the first place due to the historic low demand (although they may have boosted it in anticipation of increased sales of Versperia). Will be interesting to see what sales are like going forward although I am sure that this will just be a sales spike to coincide with the release of Vesperia and is unlikely to drive further software sales for MS although the installed base is now larger. It does show that the Japanese do not avoid MS because it is not a Japanese company, but because it hasn't previously offered games to their liking....if MS can continue to tap into such a different market compared to the Western markets as they have done with Vesperia then there might actually be a legitimate third competitor in the Japanese market place. We shall see...

How many units did M$ sell to sell out?, considering they typically average around 2-3K sales per week in Japan. They probally sold 5K.

@ crazyeighty8

If you read MCV's previous article

http://www.mcvuk.com/news/31542/Xbox-360-outsells-PS3-in-Japan-for-first-time" onclick="window.open ( this.href ); return false;" class="comment_url" >http://www.mcvuk.c...-time

You'll see that they sold over 28,000 xbox's, and usually it's around 5,000 - 7,000 mark.

Please make sensible comments, and when is this "M$" thing going to stop. It's quite tedious.
