New SKU will launch on Halloween; €449 pricetag set
After announcing a new PSP model in Leipzig this afternoon, Sony had dropped some more shocking news: a 160GB PS3 SKU is set to launch in Europe on October 31st.
The new machine will cost €449. SCEE president David Reeves told the Leipzig crowd that the machine would include €70-worth of additional downloadable content, which would be detailed nearer to launch.
Sony only announced a new 80GB PS3 for Europe at E3 last month.
Reeves confirmed that SKU will launch this Friday, and not September 29th as previously planned.
More news when we get it.

What is the point??
And the point to this is?? The vast majority of users won't fill 80% of that space. Movie rentals would usually be done 1 by 1..then deleted. Game installs? Downloadable content? This is overkill. Why not just make the 40gb one cheaper and grow the install base? Clueless. Sony clearly don't believe in the credit crunch!!
Jokers.....
Back in the day, the big guns used to battle it out on the games. It seems to have shifted to Hard Drives......
I appreciate the need for a bigger HD but I wish they would focus some of their resources on getting some games out.
This isnt a fanboy rant.
This is a gamer waiting for games, not more storage space.
Lets just hope Microsoft doesnt react with terrabyte 360.....
Re: What is the point??
PlayTV, even 80GB is a joke for recording TV. The real question is will it have BC.
Re: Jokers.....
@2 LOL so true.
Re: Re: Jokers.....
My 360 120 Go hard drive is 50% empty, and my PS3 40 Go is 75% empty... What could we do with 160 Go ?
Re: Re: Re: Jokers.....
Not backwards compatablilty; my 60gb is about 80% full and will play TV you'll need about 80-100gb to store programs on especially when playTV is updated to record HD stations. SkyHD boxes only have 160gb in them

Re: Re: Re: Re: Jokers.....
Sorry for the double post
Backwards compatibility???
160GB is probably the minimum amount of space required for the PS3 to be a viable PVR, but beyond that I don't really see the point.
Unless of course this machine is going to reintroduce PS2 backwards compatibility - that would be something worth getting excited about...
Re: Re: Re: Re: Jokers.....
There's never enough HD space imho, even if you think you have plenty left. What with PlayTV and this newly announced VidZone, games asking for more and more gigabytes of data for "installation" on top of Blu-Ray space, 180 gig is simply not enough.
I'm buying a Western Digital 320GB 2.5" Laptop Hard Drive SATAII 5400rpm 8MB Cache - OEM for £60 pounds.
Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Jokers.....
@2 hit the nail on the head... It's all about out competing the rival
You can make all the hard disk space you want, but if there's no content it's just like morning breath when you're horny... "It just don't matter..."
Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Jokers.....
Isn't the whole point of the PS3 that it allows the user to wack out one HD and put in another? If so isn't all this just window dressing?
Or did I just dream Ray Maguire's whole launch speech to UK retail and press at E3 2006.
Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Jokers.....
Who are these people who need 160GB+ of HD space for recording TV? My Sky+ box has a measly 20GB and it holds tens of hours of stuff.
Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Jokers.....
I hate it when you make me have to make an argument.
They're working towards convergence. One box under yer telly. No DVDs in yer cupboard, no CDs in yer rack - just a PS3 with all your stuff on - 9 seasons of X-Files, 10 seasons of Friends, Buffy, Angel, Bones and Lost. Wrap that up with all your rebuys of Blu-ray because it's so much better than your old DVD version of Topgun...
AND THEN...
BANG!
When the PS4 comes out, the hard drive will be different or will unfortunately wont have a compatibility wizard but hey, all those seasons of your favourite American pap will be available for legitimate download via Play tv (at a small cost of course) and you'll want to ditch those Blu-ray in favour of new super duper Blu-ray turbo XL.... because they really show off the new crystal clear quality betterer than (old) Blu-ray did.
Oh and because no one really batted an eyelid when Backwards Comp was dropped, it wont be BUT hey, all those old titles will be available via DRM - for a few quid - even though you paid fifty quid for them five years hence.
Convergence is good, no?
Re: 160gb PS3
I'll definitley be upgrading from my 40gb model in time.
I guess once downloadable movies & music come to the fore on PS Network the 160gb model may prove essential - depending how big you are on downloads...
Re: Re: 160gb PS3
SONY ROCKS
Re: Re: Re: 160gb PS3
hello
Re: Re: Re: Re: 160gb PS3
I really can't see the point of this unless your trying to store large amounts of music and video. As for the comparision with sky+. The HD box does indeed have a 160GB HDD but only half of this space is available for actual recordings. The rest is used for sky anytime. As for convergence, it will never happen. The number of HDD's needed would be totally impractical. Just think, 100 Blurays @ 50GB is 5TB. Thats 5 drives required for that, not including any music or recordings. Buy the cheapest PS3 available and change the HDD if you need to.
160gb PS3
You should upgrade because you will need more space for your game data demos updates ETC...... My 60GB is 5GB left
