No PS3 price cut this year

European PlayStation boss rules out drop in SRP on any SKU in 2008

SCEE president David Reeves has rued out any move to drop the price of PlayStation 3 hardware this year.

“There is no price cut,” he told VG247.

When press on specifically on whether or not there would be a PS3 price cut in 2008, Reeves reiterated, “No,” adding, “We’re not going to drop the price this year.”

Reeves said that price was less of a factor in the uptake of the console than good software.

“And I think it’s the games for Nintendo [too], he added. “I think whatever price they’re at, I think it’s the games that have really, really driven it.

“We started off at the beginning of the year with GT5 Prologue, then we went to GTA IV, then Metal Gear Solid. There’ll be LittleBigPlanet, and then we move onto PES and FIFA and all those.

“We’re on rails, and I think that those games are going to drive it.”

Shame...

..really, as I think they need to bring the 80GB PS3 down to around £220 for christmas, I think it'd sell really well around that price.

I have to say I agree with this statement. When you see people paying well over the original RRP for Nintendo's Wii and then handing out between £70 - £100 on Wii Fit you know people are more than happy to invest significant amounts of money in something that appeals to them. Sony have alot of software and added value services being released between now and Q1 2009 that has the potential to add considerable additional value and variety to the PS3.
Much of it providing the type of content that would I think appeal to the casual gaming market.

Of course the catch is I suspect so do there competition.

For once I think Reeves is right - the PS3 will get a sales boost this week with the release of the 80GB and also at the end of October when the 160GB launches. They'll also drive sales with software bundles and I'd fully expect the 80GB to be bundled with a game (LittleBIGPlanet is probably the next candidate) at little to no premium over the current £299 price tag. That should differentiate it sufficiently from the 160gig.

Also don't forget Sony's stated aim is to start to turn a profit as soon as possible. Further price cuts are not likely to be on the cards; "value added" bundles, on the other hand, probably are.

I do not agree...even though i am a massive playstation fan. 339 GBP is too much when you start to use your brain. I mean after two years the cost of a 160GB hard drive is the same as the 60GB hard drive. After two years you expect manufacturing costs to be slashed by a quarter at least if not in half. And remember this PS3 is missing PS2 B/C, SACD support, 4 usb ports and all those memory slots. So all of a sudden that 339 GBP does not look good value at all, and therefore the same must go for the 80GB. At the end of the day this shows Sony has learnt very little and is merely playing games at trying to achieve a long protracted boring 10 year lifespan for the PS3. The decision making really is terrible when the obvious solution is so clear...a 80GB PS3 with PS2 B/C SACD support, 4 usb ports and all those memory slots at 299 GBP, and the standard 40GB reduced to 249 GBP so some market share can be gained and people who want to play games such as LittleBigPlanet, Singstar and Buzz do not need to break the ban
