Rumble firm pays Microsoft $20m

Immersion ordered to pay Xbox 360 platform holder substantial damages following release of Sony’s Dualshock 3

A Washington court has ordered rumble firm Immersion to pay Microsoft $20.75 million in damages as a result of Sony licensing the company’s technology for use in its revised PS3 joypad, the Dualshock 3.

In the build up to the release of the next-gen consoles, Microsoft paid Immersion to use its technology in the Xbox 360 joypad. Sony, however, did not, leading to the PS3 initially launching with the rumble-less Sixaxis motion-sensing pad.

Kotaku
reports that part of Microsoft’s deal with the firm required that Immersion cough up $15 million in the event that Sony subsequently decided to jump on board with the rumble firm.

Immersion initially refused to pay the fee, but has now been ordered to do so. “We are pleased to resolve our outstanding dispute with Microsoft and to put this litigation behind us," Immersion president and CEO Clent Richardson stated.

“We now have our full attention and focus devoted to working with innovative companies around the world, including Microsoft, to accelerate and rapidly achieve global adoption of our haptic technology in gaming, consumer electronics, mobility, and medical products.”

As part of the deal, Immersion has also been admitted to Microsoft’s Certified Partner program.

Clever move Microsoft!

Clearly Microsoft would never allow anyone to be as successful as them in stealing other people’s intellectual property or technology!!! Easy to give things away for free or practically nothing Mr. Gate’s when they don’t belong to you!

The whole way Microsoft has raised itself to where it is and Mr. Gates power in the world is in my opinion the greatest swindle of the past 30 years.

“As part of the deal, Immersion has also been admitted to Microsoft’s Certified Partner program.”

I bet they have, the way corporation make money out of thin air through certification is borderline illegal on many levels, and has very little to do with quality.

Microsoft paid Immersion off when they threatened to sue them, so why shouldn't MS get some payback now that Sony are Immersion's new bedfellows?

Sony never did admit that the technology wasn't theirs in the end, did they?

If memory serves me correctly didn't nintendo also have to pay for the immersion technology?
I wonder if they will follow suit?

They may not make him a fanboy, but they do make him an idiot. Rarely have I read such poorly composed and idiotic ramblings. Utter gash.

But didn't Microsoft buy a load of Immersion stock following the initial lawsuit and pay-off?

This means that Microsoft has now basically sued a company that it owns a large portion of.

Good comments by JD, he is not the only one who is 'sickened' and 'disgusted' by the tactics employeed by Microsoft. First it was in the PC industry and now they have come in to the videogames industry...and not to innovate but to monopolise... be warned.
