‘Games are preventing exercise’

The Sun newspaper’s resident doctor says there is ‘no excuse’ for ‘clicking on consoles’

The Sun’s official medical expert, Dr. Keith Hopcroft, has told his readers that interactive entertainment is replacing exercise for many young men.

In an article entitled, ‘Time for exercise – not for excuses’, Hopcroft writes:

‘The only bits of anatomy many young men exercise are their fingers and wrists.

‘No sniggering at the back, please, I’m talking about computer games.

‘All those leisure hours we used to fill with climbing trees or kicking balls have gone.

‘Because we’re all too busy clicking on consoles with eyes glued to a screen.

‘I recently caught my teenage kids playing virtual tennis.

‘There’s a tennis court down the road.

‘But instead of getting fresh air, they were wearing out our carpet, their thumb joints and my patience.’

SUN OF A B......

My favourite from the article was this part!

Girl's guide to getting him off his backside
• Invite him to bed – sex isn’t great exercise but is better than nothing.

The childish nature in which this paper is written is to be taken no seriously than a copy of Nuts or Zoo! I would have said comics but they actually have some depth!!!

The fact the so called professionals are putting this crap forward is disconcerting!

I think they touched on class, racialism, sexism and then attacked the good old young hoodie as well as us gamers yet again.

The perfect ingredients for a SUN article I suppose.

I havent read the whole article but I dont know anyone who used to exercise INSTEAD of playing games?!

The people who I know who play games now, play games as a replacement for watching TV or drinking their evenings away down the pub, not exercising.

Is it just me or isnt it a bit hypocritical to have an article about games preventing people from getting out for exercise and a large advert for their own online bingo site which includes a ton of flash games?

Here we go again

Interesting how no-one writes articles about how books are making kids fat...

Seriously though, ANYTHING in extremes is bad for you. It is possible to play games and still go out and exercise/play as well as many other things. Parents need to ensure the balance is struck.

The Mail is worse

The Mail campaigns relentlessly against games from a position of pure ignorance. This Sun story is just a mild bit of sensationalism in comparison.

Our problem is that there really are people stupid enough to believe this rubbish. Probably a majority of readers. Remember a majority voted for the chimp to be a two term president in America. And a majority voted three time in the UK for us to have this truly awful, grossly incompetent Labour government.
