Rental specialist rolls out new video game-centric store concept following last year’s Gamestation sell-off

Blockbuster Entertainment is to take on the specialists once again with its Total Entertainment centres, a new store concept that deals primarily with video games.

According to sources at the firm, Blockbuster is planning to roll out 30 Total Entertainment stores by the end of September, with each store featuring a full range of games along with Blu-Ray DVDs, iPods and other gadgets.

“This is the new breed of Blockbuster stores,” one Blockbuster Total Entertainment store manager told MCV.

“The big launch is set for the end of September, and there will be 30 stores in total, although many are open already. Each store specialises in video games, but they also feature Blu-Ray, music, MP3 players and other electronics.

“In the few weeks our store has been open, I’ve never seen anything like it. One of the areas Blockbuster is keen to push is our trade-in offer, and it is with this that we can be more competitive with the specialists, supermarkets and indies. The response from customers has been fantastic.”

Along with a new look and a focus away from DVD, Blockbuster is also trialling a new ‘flexible’ pricing policy on pre-owned software.

“With the credit crunch, every customer is valuable,” continued the source. “So if a customer wants something particular at a set price, we’ll try and find a happy medium.”

haha... Blockbuster can dream on. The rental side of the business is so badly in debt they are reeling from the mistake of selling gamestation. They will never succeed in this part of the retail industry. They have no idea how to run anything to do with computer games retail as proven with how bad their concession stres were with Gamestation.

Keep on dreaming damn yanks ain't got a clue!

we been doing this for over the past year and have made huge profits at our mega store, so the statement above is pretty much dreaming about it being a failure and not being ran correctly when we have already trialled it and seen a huge success!

We will see. If they were so good they would have realised how much Gamestation was worth to them, instead they needed the money to pay off the massive debt their flagging rental business is causing, and still causing!
Here to companies that have to by stock with credit rather than cash!!! it will never work!!!

REntal business was up 14% last quarter at blockbuster. The first time in 7 years. It is already up 5% this quarter. The article has some miss statements..not all 30 stores will feature games, there is a varity of them. Dallas-already complete(one you get milk shakes at), Reno-under construction now( Have Expanded Games, High Tech Area, and Beverage Center) New York- Varity of Game, Tech and Download Kiosk. Cali-Sony store, chicago-Oprah Store....And look out for Christmas..you will see the NEW Blockbuster...

@2 The thing you'd realise if you knew even the slightest thing about Blockbusters and their time running Gamestation was that the top three performing stores were all concessions.

@3. I used to work for Blockbuster as an AM and the company is the biggest mess I have ever seen in terms of organisation and getting their stock wrong. Although I agree the concession stores took a lot of money I very much doubt that the Brothers Grimm at the top of the food chain can pull off what they did with their stores in Ireland.

To show their commitment to staff they decided to have a £1/2 million managers bash at Wembley and at the same time pull certain bonuses and pay rises because they said they could not afford it (one of the many reasons I left). If that is the way they treat staff you can really see the staff helping to push this with area and regional managers that have no place being in this industry in the first place.

As regards to the way they treated me. Well, I am still waiting for my P45, P60 and back pay and that was in February. Yes I am a disgruntled ex-employee of the company but this is not the sole reason for writing this. It is to show from an ex-employees point of view that their organisation is totally dire.

I know somebody who works in one of these stores and they have just seen a massive growth in profit in only their second month of trading if that is anybodies idea of failure i would like to see what sucsess looks like.
Of course they have to diversify like any buisness but when retail stores are seeing growth in profit while the news is constantly talking about a credit crunch surely they are doing something right?
The games buisness is seeing a growth in footfall and those customers tend to pick up a rental which has margins that game and gamestation could only dream of.
NB the sale of gamestation was nessesary as they were in charge of blockbusters games buisness as well as theirs for the whole time that they owned them but who knows they sell games?? nobody, shows how good gamestation are they ran the games buisness for 700 blockbuster stores for years and it went nowhere so they sold them for the cash and decided that they could do it better themselves and i dont blame them.

@gazzara The bonuses weren't pulled, point of fact Q4 last year they were extended. As for the conference, that was largely paid for by our suppliers as they have a good deal of money invested in Blockbuster to shift their products.

@2 and 5 The Gamestation sale went towards paying off the debts caused by the huge gamble the US business took on the no late fees concept. The UK business actually performs pretty well on rental, and the new BBGames stores are churning out good numbers. With the loss making stores being reviewed and closed where necessary the business is moving forward.

The business that the stores picks up off its preowned games and movies is something a lot of our competitors would kill for especially when you look at the margins
