Activision set for PS2 release blitz

Publisher keeps faith with last-gen format

Following the success of Kung Fu Panda and LEGO Indiana Jones on PS2, publisher Activision is set to release a plethora of big titles for Sony’s last generation console.

The firm is already working on PS2 versions of major releases such as Quantum of Solace, Call of Duty: World at War and Spiderman: Web of Shadows, and these games will be joined by kids’ titles Barbie Horse Adventure: Summer Camp, Shrek’s Carnival Craze and Madagascar: Escape 2 Africa. Activision is also publishing LucasArts’ Force Unleashed in the UK.

“The PlayStation 2 continues to sell around the world,” said Activision’s UK MD Andrew Brown. “And Activision’s aim is to deliver its brands to consumers across the broadest number of platforms.

“Sony did an amazing job of extending the lifecycle of the PSOne and it is doing it again with the PS2. According to NPD, ChartTrack and GFK, there are more than 78 million PS2s in the market, making it by far the largest installed base of any console system to date.”

However, despite a strong Christmas line-up for the PlayStation 2, Activision has yet to commit to the console for 2009. But Brown insists that the platform will remain in the publisher’s thoughts as long as there is money to be made.

“Activision will continue to support the PS2 so long as the platform is economically viable,” he added.
