New PSP does NOT have shorter battery life

Sony changes its mind about the PSP 3000’s power consumption, saying there will be no reduction

SCEA’s hardware marketing director John Koller has released a statement correcting claims he made earlier in the week regarding that battery life of the firm’s upcoming PSP 3000.

On Monday he stated that the machine’s brighter screen would reduce its operating time by up to 30 minutes – however, a statement on the Official PlayStation blog says:

“There have been reports about the battery life of the new PSP system being shorter than the current model, following an interview we recently did with Gamespot. I’d like to make a correction and clarify that the new PSP will have equivalent battery life to the current PSP, about four to six hours for games and about four to five hours for UMD videos.

“While the enhanced screen of the new PSP draws a little more power, our engineers in Japan worked to reduce the power consumption of the overall system including its components, so you won’t have to worry about losing any time when enjoying the more vibrant visuals displayed with the new PSP. We hope this clears everything up.”

The newly fashioned handheld is due out in the UK on October 17th, and will cost £149.99.

Lol - I just don't trust Sony anymore.

They just seem to lie or make things up - even when they talk about their own products.

I really doubt the tech team at Sony managed to fix the battery issue in like 5 days.
Surely John Koller would have known if they were trying to correct any battery issues - and would have kept his mouth shut?

Sounds to me like Sony got a lot of negative feedback on the news - and wanted it corrected.

Personally I still don't get the whole point of the PSP 3000. It doesn't seem to offer anything that makes me want to get one.
Perhaps if I didn't own a PSP already it would be a decent purchase. But then again I would be able to pick up the oldermodel for much cheaper.

-I got my PSP about 2 years ago for £110 with a few games and acessories.
£150 for just a PSP seems too steep (even if it has some new features).

I get about 8 to 10 rounds of Golf on EBG2. That's about 11 to 15 minutes per round and that certainly isn't 4 to 6 hours. With WiFi play, that drops even further.

The battery life on the PSP has always been poor, it's one of its many flaws unfortunately. You can imagine what it would have been like had they not underclocked the cpu.
