Samsung: Blu-Ray has five years left

Consumer electronics giant says Sony’s HD format will be dead by 2013

Despite its belief that the next few years will bring massive profit to those who’ve invested in Sony’s high-def disc format Blu-Ray, Korean electronics firm Samsung has stated that it thinks Blu-Ray will be dead by 2013.

Speaking to Pocket-Lint, Samsung UK’s director of consumer electronics Andy Griffiths stated: “I think it Blu-Ray has five years left – I certainly wouldn't give it 10. Still, it's going to be huge. We are heavily back-ordered at the moment.”

Griffiths added that 2008 will, in his opinion, be the year of Blu-Ray.

Well, 5 more years would take the format up to the point the PS3 is likely to be retired in favour of the PS4 by Sony, so I can see the logic there. Thing is, it’s also about the time that the UK digital switch-over will be completed and we might finally have started seeing some HD television broadcasts over the terrestrial signals. The HD era will barely have begun for many people, so I’m not sure Blu-ray will actually die out by then.

The other key problem, of course, is what will replace physical media? I can’t see another disc-based format being launched, but BT aren’t exactly rushing to upgrade all the nation’s cable networks so that we can all get our HD television, video and gaming content via the internet (without an interminable wait, that is). Some countries may be ready to bid farewell to discs by 2013, but I’m not sure we will.

People do realise that the Freeview technology currently used for Terrestrial broadcasting will not support HD right? Hence we have Freesat, once the digital switchover has been completed the old analogue broadcast channels will most likely be sold for commercial use.

BT are currently looking into upgrading the complete phone network to fiber but do not want to incure all the costs and then be told by OFCOM they have to share it with all ISPs so are currently looking how to spread the costs with either big business or the goverment.
