Morrisons ‘constantly looking at new promotions’

This week’s incredible price drops could be the first of many, says supermarket

UK supermarket chain Morrisons has made its intentions for the video game space clear, terming its games offering ‘very important’ after slashing the price of big-name new releases like Tiger Woods to just £15.

The deals were advertised in the national press, and are set to last until September 14th. Games on offer include Mercenaries 2 on Xbox 360 for £25, Spore Creatures for just £12.99 and Tiger Woods PGA Tour ’09 All Play for £15. Other chart titles for Xbox 360, PS3, DS and Wii have also been heavily discounted.

“Morrisons is committed to offering value for money deals across the full weekly shop including food and non food items,” a Morrisons spokesperson told MCV. “Gaming and home entertainment are very important in today’s current climate and Morrisons is constantly looking at new promotions for the customer.”

Some specialist retailers have expressed concerns that such offers could devalue new releases. However, several independents have told MCV that they’ve taken full advantage of the deals.

“Our staff went down there bright and early to score some extra stock,” said one leading independent. “The real bargain on show was Guitar Hero: On Tour, which was only £12.50.”

“Morrisons tend to do themed special offers every week. Last week it was lunch box products that were heavily discounted. Expect plenty of Mercenaries 2 to appear on eBay next week…”

done it also, I cleared them out of there minimal stock so the only place people can buy it now is me or woolworths and I am cheaper - woot.

It makes Morrisons look silly as they have no stock. A perfect plan set in motion, lol.

blame Morrisons, they started it and we are capitalising on it for once. You wouldn't think twice about paying for a game under-priced anyway so I don't know what the problem is.

Indies have been screwed over for years and this is a chance to get back in the game. You'll still get your games cheaper!! Just not from Morrisons as Indies clean up the stock

Scumbags?

Do Morrisons care who buy their stock? No. Do UK indies every get the same deals as the UK multiples? No.

We've all heard this before, it isn't new in any way. Big stores selling one category of products very cheap for a short period.

If publishers are supporting the prices (they might not be), more fool them - they should spend a little less on marketing products that can't make the sales forecasts.

It's not great for consumers as they become more wary of the profits publishers "must be making if they can suddenly sell their games at such a low price".

Before anyone suggests it, this has nothing to do with the credit crunch.

well actually the women on the entertianment section at my morrisons said it was due to slow sales and the credit crunch, but who cares, cheap games, why not, as for scumbags, screw you,im sick of being called a rip off every day when we try to sell games and make £3 per new title, just because supermarkets sell at cost price !!! if you knew the price supermarkets pay for some items im sure you would be calling them scumbags, get a grip

Already Banned From Asda

I fear for Distie's like Centresoft, Koch & Gem as it is quite clear to everyone except these big 3 that all us Indies now buy more stock from Supermarkets, Game & Amazon than Distie's. Everytime you explain to Centresoft that they are too expensive and Supermarkets or Amazon are cheaper they just laugh and insist that we should be buying from them instead as they are the official suppliers of these Products. The big three Distie's are the most expensive, the likes of Keyne Distribution & Ideal are far cheaper and allows us to continually match prices of supermarkets. Until now !!!!. I foresee Asda being the one who follows Morrisons not Game or anyone else. Shame because I am banned from Asda as they know me and know that I have an Indie Game shop so they do not allow me to get any stock. Surely if they want to sell these games at silly prices it shouldn't matter whether I buy 100 items or 100 people buy 1 item. I have noticed that all supermarkets restrict how many games can be sold but you never see them restricting Crates of Alcohol or Bread to caterers. VIVA LA REVOLUTION !!!!!

yep i agree keyne are amazing, supplying spore on pc for £8 less than centresoft, gem also over priced, not using trilogy now, the big 3 dont care they have hmv etc,
use members of your family to buy from supermarkets, our woolies wont sell to us so i send in mates, brothers sisters etc, but Morissons know i am game shop and they dont care who buys what, tesco are a pain but again i take up 3-4 mates to buy for me, im using keyne more, and the rest alot less, they dont support me on price, gem are terrible when it comes down to hardward discounts you tell them about they do not care, ive not sold a 360 for 3 months now, no point, no profit and no deals from gem !

Cheers for the praise - we do our best to help indies in the UK. Not many others seem to do that. This deal will effect us on the distribution side too. Indies being fored buying from places like Amazon and Morrisons is not good for us too, shame they are trying to make a mark in the industry. Customers will stop going to them as soon as the deals are off, as they have no sale staff that know about games. Just whats happened in Eastenders the night before and which are the best apples in isle 18 !!!!!

Centresoft, Gem and Koch do not understand (or do not want to admit) that they are no longer the big distribution company's they once were, Play, Amazon, Game, Gamestation and all the supermarkets buy more stock and get better prices, Company's like Keyne do well because they understand the independent market and don't try to tell us how we should run our business, they also are honest about the titles they are selling have good product knowledge and great customer service. Something that Centresoft,Gem and Koch struggle to offer.

i have known certain suppliers tell me i have to take some crappy title in order for me to be allowed to take a triple A title that i really needed, things are changing, maybe not for the best, but i also use keyne, you need a choice and centresoft&gem just dont listen to their customers, or maybe their hands are tied and they cant change or help customers out, which ever it is, they will loose more and more accounts

If you look at Nindie, without logging in, they appear to have given up all pretence of being a distributor and selling direct to the consumer. Do these sales still get credited to a chosen independent?

Its all very odd you know.
Maybe its just different reps, but people I speak to at Gem and Centresoft are very helpful and really know their stuff. They go well out of their way to help us. Maybe we're just really lucky with our reps as I said.

Trilogy though... I think I have to resort to the over used "lol" whenever they are mentioned.

Koch aren't up there with Gem or Centresoft but they are still helpful and we get alot of Nintendo stuff from them, well we get enough that we haven't been out of Stock of Wii's since last christmas (not for lack of tryng or sales!)

Maybe some of it comes down to how you treat the suppliers, as some of the stories we hear about how indies speak to their reps at Gem/Centresoft/Koch its no wonder they get bad allocations etc. Oh well, whenever that happens, we benefit as our reps are happy to give us more as we're nice, so keep it up :)

In the know

3 days into the price reductions Morrisons have had thousands of complaints from angry parents about people bragging to have cleared the shelves.
Some people are reported to have bought as much as 20 of the same title with some people leaving the store with over 100 games.
The next price reduction on games before christmas (Late oct) will be restricted to 1 title per customer (i.e 1 GTA , 1 COD) with a minimum £25 grocery spend in store.
I think this was just a teaser, the Grocery spend was always on the cards just like the 5p of a litre of fuel deals.

that wont work, morrisons isnt the cheapest place for food, i wouldnt buy one product to get another cheaper, if it was 1 per person its no problem ive got over 30 family and friends who would go in for me as they know how hard it is in this industry, as for speaking to csoft, gem etc like crap, we have a great releationship with all suppliers but koch really are bad, you cant increase market share ever as nothing is in stock, so you cant order more, gem+csoft try but essentially i can get games cheaper else where im afraid, this is fact, they are helpful which is great but i need help were if counts, discounts,

I'm not surprised Morrisons if are changing their policy - selling large amounts of stock to indies or e-bayers isn't going to have the desired effect of getting people shopping for groceries in the store.

Whilst I think the idea of a minimum £25 grocery spend will kill off a lot of the incentive to go and buy games there for ordinary punters, the idea of 1 copy of each game per person is not unreasonable.

I get one of my dodgy customers to nick all Morrisons stock, then pay him just enough to keep him in crystal meth, then sell titles £15 under RRP,making me very popular with all my legit customers who wonder "just how do you do it?" Hey now thats LOL!Using this marketing ploy I have found Tesco,Asda and Hmv to be very good distributors, but Sainsburys are a no no since the "mace" incident of 2003-LOL you guys!

Hermann Goering was born in Rosenheim, Bavaria, in 1893. His father was a professional soldier who rose to be the first governor of German West Africa (modern-day Namibia, where one of the main streets in the capital is still Goringstrasse). Young Hermann grew up in friends' homes and in military schools while his parents were abroad. (Historians and amateur psycho-analysts have had a field day attributing Goring's adult evil to his childhood without parental love. Of course, Winston Churchill's youth was about the same.)
