‘GTA sex beast’ is Sun's most popular story

Page 9 article in today’s tabloid dominates newspaper’s official online home

The Sun’s now infamous ‘Sex beast copied Grand Theft Auto’ article has become the most prominent story on the homepage of the newspaper’s website today.

That would indicate that the article, which only appeared on page nine of today’s The Sun paper, has grown in popularity throughout the day.

You can read the full story here, which details the trail of 19-year-old Ryan Chinnery at Maidstone Crown Court.

Chinnery pleaded guilty of the sexual assault of two women, as prosectuer Eleanor Laws said the fact Chinnery played GTA was a likely factor in the assaults, which occurred when the assailant was 17-years old.

Laws said the game “may go some way to explaining [Chinnery’s] attitude to women”; not, as the publication’s headline explicitly states, that he ‘copied’ anything from the franchise.

The article reports: ‘The case will fuel debate on the effects on youngsters of violent computer games.’

Do you think that’s true? Or will the tone and bias of The Sun article have more of an influence?

Bias???

I think MCV can be forgiven for ending their story with such a leading question. Like most in this industry, they must be just as frustrated at the ongoing trend of blame loosed at the gaming community.
Clearly this is another case of an extremely disturbed individual, performing criminal acts, who also happens (like millions of others) to own a copy of GTA, which at 17 he shouldn't.
Selfish though it may be, it's a shame they didn't find any Marilyn Manson CDs instead. Nothing against him, but his retorts seem to come a little more readily and with the vitriol that these journalists deserve.

Could someone please remind The Sun that games are like movies: They don't create psychos. They only make psychos more creative.

Have they taken into account how many people have played GTA and NOT gone on a violent rampage or raped someone?

Someone who cannot differentiate the idea of being a bad character (to which the game points out you are, the word crime is on the box, and in the game describing the actions of the player) in a game and committing actual REAL crimes must have some kind of psychological disorder. Games aren't to blame.

I'm a very passive person, though nothing has made me laugh more than decapitating three old ladies with a samuri sword on the GTA3 golf course. Do I wish to carry this out in real life? No. Has GTA made me fantasize about doing a driveby with an automatic? Maybe. Will I act out that fantasy? No.
On the flip side: Does the media form opinion and end up causing a lynch mob beat up a paediatrician for being a paedophile? Yes. Does the media create a storm on a range of issues that trigger a virtual war of distrust between Muslims and everyone else? Yes. Has it helped fuel the fires of our economic collapse? Yes.

Don't know hwo you are but that is one of the smartest posts I've ever read on here (actually - probably one of the best arguments ever to appear on the same page as the name MCV but that's a different conversation) - well done, sir!

...and how much of that popularity has come from the entire gaming internet linking the story in incandescent rage?

If we're going to feed these stories with hits, then we're as bad as the papers who give the violent games their free publicity.

The article stated the police found the game in his house, and thought "maybe" he copied the game in real life. So then The Sun newspaper decided to blow it out of proportion.

Well done to The Sun, you have just promoted the game even more.

Just to let people know, the police took away all the games from his home during a search and only found an early GTA, he was already in police custody when the edition they are blaming even came out. Lets get the facts right.
