Release date confirmed for October 17th; Champions League licence secured
Pro Evolution Soccer 2009 will be released on October 17th for PlayStation 3, Xbox 360 and PC – and comes complete with a fully-licensed UEFA Champions League mode, MCV can reveal.
Konami has also fired a warning shot at rival EA, insisting that Pro Evolution Soccer is still far superior to the FIFA franchise.
“It is all very well for EA to say that FIFA is making great strides, but general opinion suggests that they still have a long way to go before they can match the intuitive and absorbing gameplay of Pro Evolution Soccer,” said Konami’s PES team leader Jon Murphy.
“That is not to say that we are resting on our laurels, though. PES 2009 has a vast number of new additions that elevate it far beyond anything anyone else is doing.”
Konami has secured the Champions League licence for four years, which allows the firm to use all the elements and attributes of the popular competition within PES.

The publisher has also signed agreements with Premier League clubs Liverpool and Manchester United, giving it permission to use the players, kits and logos from both teams in the title. PES 2009 is also the official video game of the England national team, with Wembley featured as one of the new grounds.
“With the addition of the Champions League and agreements with two of the UK’s biggest clubs in Manchester United and Liverpool, we are working hard to bring fresh licences to the Pro Evolution Soccer series,” continued Murphy.
“We have the most realistic recreation of Wembley, a team roster that features the biggest teams in Europe, and a stunning online mode. We believe that this version of PES is the perfect step-on for newcomers to the series, but also a game that will keep existing fans of the franchise more than happy.”
Konami has also confirmed to MCV that the 2009 edition will feature vast improvements over the previous game, including improved AI, new control methods, a graphical overhaul and key online enhancements. Lionel Messi has also been confirmed as the game's cover star (see picture).
PES 2009 will be released on October 17th for 360, PS3 and PC, with a PS2 and PSP version coming shortly after. A Wii title is also due out in the spring.

Split Release Dates again !!!
Yet again the release dates are all over the place again and this nothing but helps fifa sell better on the wii, ps2, psp etc.... as theres only so long customers will wait
The Wii Version comming out next spring is a joke
Re: Split Release Dates again !!!
good shout matt they need to release before fifa 09!!
Re: Split Release Dates again !!!
Wii is a joke. So underpowered, not even true nex gen console.
Re: Re: Split Release Dates again !!!
Marty.... shhhhh.
Next Spring is fine for PES. It means I'll sell copies of FIFA now and PES again in six months. Two football games released at the same time on the same platform tends to reduce sales.
Re: Re: Re: Split Release Dates again !!!
and the demo? when it'll be released?

"It is all very well for EA to say that FIFA is making great strides, but general opinion suggests that they still have a long way to go before they can match the intuitive and absorbing gameplay of Pro Evolution Soccer,” said Konami’s PES team leader Jon Murphy"
Well, sorry Jon, but speaking as a PES fan, the last two PES games were mediocre at best. FIFA 08/UEFA, was far better than PES 6 and 08. Looking across gaming forums it would seem that the general feeling is that many a PES fan was disappointed with PES 08 so much so that their turning their football needs towards FIFA. I truly hope that PES 09 gets back to the series glory, but don't bull$hit us Jon, PES 08 was awful and FIFA 08 was quite clearly the better game and as a result Konami have a lot of fans to convince that PES is still the daddy.
Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Split Release Dates again !!!
Thats exactly right! I loved PES for so long and i love making the kits look identical to the real ones and downloading the changed names and stuff but the graphic gamplay and gliches in the last game were awful i am now converted to fifa. But ill have a peak at the next PES and see what its like
Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Split Release Dates again !!!
To be fair, Jon is only doing his job.
'Yeah PES has been getting slowly worse, I prefer Fifa nowadays' would not have made him popular with his Boss.
It always makes me chuckle when you guys have a go at people for bigging up their own company and dissing the opposition.
Indie Boys - Do you tell customers to go to Tesco's/Morrisons et al because they have bettter prices?
Thought not.

Funnily enough, I have met an Indie who recommended people to ASDA and tried to focus on PC related products. He's not there anymore...
Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Split Release Dates again !!
i can't wait for release the legendry game
Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Split Release Dates agai
if pes 2009 is bad, then a lot of fans will buy fifa 09 for sure...this is it 4 pes,its win or lose situation...and I think they will lose it...but I hope Im wrong :D
Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Split Release Dates
Get a grip! No matter how bad Pes 08 was, its 100's times better than anything Fifa will ever do
PES 2009
I will be waiting for reviews from my fellow PES fans, before purchasing 2009.
Won't be making the same mistake as last year. :)
Re: Re: PES 2009
will Anfield be on there
Re: Re: Re: PES 2009
Yes PES has rested on it's laurels, but fifa still has that weird Button Hit to character animation delay that never lets you feel 100% in control. But with new features like 11 on 11 on-line play, Player stats being downloaded from each premiership game every week and a revised camera system, PES should be getting worried.. But it's like the age old question: Do you go for the drop dead gorgeous looking girl with no personality, Or the Ok looking girl thats dynamite in the sack...?
Re: Re: Re: Re: PES 2009
I agree with the 'being in control' comment about fifa.. having to power up your through balls and passes is a joke. and the shots go random.. u cannot PUT them where u want them to go like in the PES series, as I have the demo and it is fantastic so far. I have downloaded FIFA09, and tbh if it wasnt for the 'be a pro' mode I wouldnt play it at all, but its getting 10mins now and again till PES comes out and oh wait they have their own 'be a pro' mode... which looks better... diddums!!
Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: PES 2009
PES rules its much better than Fifa and I know because I got both demo's and Fifa is a long way back from pes the only thing Fifa has got on pes is the graphics not including the players because on pes the players look so much more realistic than Fifa so that's why pes RULES
Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: PES 2009
can i play pro 2009 at playstation 2
Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: PES 2009
have always been a fifa fan, but fifa 09 feels a bit dodgy, there version of become a legend isnt as good and the celebrations dont really work. will probably get pro evo because it looks good on the demo.
PES 2009
Pes is SIMPLY the best. FIFA just cant meat the graphics and gameplay of pes. I just hope that pes gets the license for Barclays league. If so then PES will become "INVINCIBLE"
Re: PES 2009
I cant see pes getting the licence for the premierhsip any time soon, but as long as the edit mode allows you to properly edit the pseudo teams its all good. cant wait for pes 2009
Re: Re: PES 2009
OMG why are you lot so bent? pes 08 was so much better than fifa 08 its un true! fifa as far as realism goes is ****e and only looks good. pes wins in every other area. the ball on fifa is like a blow up beach ball when you shoot its pathetic. and pes has allways been getting better and better! how was pes08 **** at all? sum 1 pls explain to me?
Re: Re: Re: PES 2009
@18: If you didn't power up your passes, how would you pass longer distances?
If you read the PES manual, it will tell you to press X to pass to a nearby player, or hold (i.e. power up) X to pass to a further player. So the fact is, you criticise a game for having the same feature as the one you prefer. You cannot implement a variable power control system without a period of time where you are building up the power unless you use the analogue buttons. The problem is, neither game is using them (they don't seem to have sussed the obvious way of combatting the short button travel problem and it's really quite easy), so you have to hold the button longer. The trick is to plan ahead and build up the power "before" you receive the ball... Do that and passes can be made over any distance, in any direction instantaneously.
Seems to me that a lot of people are prefering the "kiddies" mode of press a button and immediately pass to the "right" player. Put Fifa on "manual" and you have to control direction and power of every type of kick. You don't need a separate through ball button when you have full control of pass direction and power.
In real life, every kick has a period of time where you are going through a preparation state to take the kick, Fifa has that same period. So after Fifa being criticised for being too arcadey, the reality is, the PES players can't actually handle a realistic football game where you have to fully control every aspect of the play... hence they now stick with the arcadey PES, oh the irony of it all.
Jon Murphy's comments make me laugh, they've got an online mode that isn't even on par with Fifa 08 and that's supposed to be something to be proud of?
And seriously, who wants their game to be the official game of the England football team? It's like having a racing game that is the official game of Red Bull.
@24: Please go and spout your nonsense on IGN where it will be accepted... or expected.
Re: Re: Re: Re: PES 2009
as simple as it can be put fifa is...well the less said the better!
pro evo wins on so many levels and all this "oh ive been converted and im playing fifa now" business is a bunch of a$$ grapes i tell you! one game (pro evo 08) that didnt do to well in the series and took alot of criticism and people are "converting" well ill say this to those people, ive known more people to pick up and play fifa for ages and still buy pro evo in the end.. thats got to be saying something!
i have to admit this does make for great pub arguements next time anyone goes to a pub!
Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: PES 2009
Interesting comment @ 25 ''LeeC'',
I see your trying to give it the ''know it all'' .. very clever. Unfortunately your speaking to someone who knows better. You mention PES having the same passing mode as fifa.. which is an amazing statement tbh. On PES yes, u can hold the button to do a stronger pass, and when u do so it puts the ball to the player furthers forward in the direction you are facing, whereas fifa u need to hold the button to an extent just for a short pass.. to ANY player your passing to.. so please explain to me how that is the same, it will make for a good read LOL.
''In real life, every kick has a period of time where you are going through a preparation state to take the kick''
^^ LMAO do u know what a first-time pass is? or how 1-2 passes are exected?????? a half decent player knows where his team-mates are before he recieves the ball mate and doesnt need a second thought as to where he is going to play the ball.. hence we have something called the ''offside rule'' which strikers try to exploit with first-time passes.
the most hilarious part of your post is your referrance to this ''kiddies'' style of play, I don't use manual pass on PES, does that make me a noob? coz i can assure you I am not. You see the lad that was in the book on pes6? Mr McClean? I beat him 4-0 by using the default passing mode.. so you explain to me does that make me a bad player because I exploit first-time passes and 1-2's?
To be fair you come accross as somebody that thinks hes a better player because he uses the more advanced control set. Believe me you are very wrong mate.. the 'manual pass' is a thing of fifa, which is clearly your game.. ive got fifa09 on pc and it is simply awful.. ESPECIALLY the controlls..should suit you down to the ground son.
P.S
- try playing football in real life before reverting to comparing it to a game.. ive never played a football match in my life where im holding a control pad to power up a pass =]
Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: PES 2009
If my PES2008 strikers turn around and start running 180 degrees away from goal one more time I'm going to track everybody involved with Konami down and whip them with a birch branch!
