US: 360 sales double after price drop

Microsoft claims that hardware sales have climbed 100 per cent following $199 price drop

Though the official sales numbers are yet to be revealed, Xbox 360 platform holder Microsoft is claiming that sales of its machines have experienced a 100 per cent upturn across all SKUs following its recent price cuts in the territory.

A press release, supplied via Kotaku, reads: “Coming off the heels of the console price drop last week, Microsoft Xbox 360 sales have surged, with retailers reporting over 100 per cent sales lift for all Xbox 360 models compared to the previous weekend.

“Additionally, retailers are reporting that between Friday, September 5 and Sunday September 7, some Xbox 360 models were selling at six times the rate they were the weekend prior.

“At $199, Xbox 360 is now not only the most affordable next-generation console available, but it also packs more entertainment punch per dollar than any other consumer electronics device connected to your TV.”

Imagine how a £99 360 would sell in Europe?

I know in the UK it'd probably sell like hotcakes at that price.

Wouldnt be surprised if this time next year that would be the effective price before they unveil the 720 or whatever phase 2 is going to be called.

Come on Sony, drop the PS3 by 50 quid, there's a credit crunch on ya know!

The price may be dropping, but I've already paid more then enough after 4 console failures over my 2 years following the format.
Are they reliable yet? or is it still pot luck with the hardware?
I want to pick up Fable 2 and GeoW 2 but dont want to be screwed over for a fifth time.

So instead of using the extended warranty MS give for it you bought a new console each time?

On the reliability front the falcon I have is much more cooler and stable than my other 3 previously were, and it gets no where as hot as my others did so I'd say the flacon are a lot more reliable than the previous versions.

If you want to be really really safe then I'd say wait until the jasper versions are out which has been said as being around august/september, you'll knnow when they are out as you will see the ways of differentiating it from a flacon one.

Yeah fair point, and call it a quick fix, or an excuse to make us shell out on bigger HD's, but the planned option for game installs in November will make the machines run alot cooler. Bit vexed about how much they charge for HD's though. At least the PS3 uses standard laptop HD's and is alot more versatile and cheaper to upgrade.

Still deciding to either shell out on a new 360 (i busted my previous one, lol) or buy a PS3 come november . . . . .

To 5:
The extended warranty only covers RROD, my first console kept overheating (freezing repeatedly) weeks after the 1 year standard warranty ran out, the other two (referbs both sent from MS at IIRC £70 each) both had defective drives, the final one I traded in store after it started freezing again.

I have not suffered ANY RROD issues, otherwise of course I would have had it replaced at no cost.

Ahh right I see, shame you didnt do what someone I know did and just, ahem, overheat the xbox till the red lights showed themselves for use with the extended warranty.
