Mk. 2 of portable handheld coming this year to threaten DS and PSP… no, really, we’re being serious
The new, improved Gizmondo mk.2 console will definitely be on sale in Europe by Christmas.
No need to check your screen: that’s a promise by the CEO of the creator of the handheld console.
Mediapower boss Rich Jenkins has shown off the new system for the first time to a lucky Swedish journalist (albeit without turning it on).
Jenkins confirmed that a deal with a Chinese manufacturer was "negotiated and done” and that his company could ramp up production in future – dependant on demand.
The design is very similar to the first Gizmondo, but includes a newer version of nVidia's graphics chip and a new battery. Owners of the old Gizmondo can even swap their old battery for a new one free of charge.

Jenkins said the price would probably be higher than the $99 the firm originally envisaged.
The system will come with a choice of two operating systems –Windows CE 6.0 or Google's new Android OS – and will be open, so any Window game or emulation can run on it.
We first reported on Gizmondo’s return in January. The last iteration (pictured) launched in 2005, but had ceased production by February, 2006.
Former CEO Carl Freer is involved in the new project.
It’s all looking dangerously above board. What do you make of it? Could an open handheld platform carrying the Gizmondo name really take on the likes of DS and PSP? Tell us in the comments section below.

Hahahahaha
Hahahahahaha...
Ermm, no.
I think it'll crash and burn, not unlike a certain Ferrari Enzo if I recall correctly...
(Okay, so it didn't burn but it did crash in an absolutely spectacular fashion)
Why bother!
You would have thought they would have learnt by the lack of interest first time round.
What next? A next gen barcode battler?
Re: Hahahahaha
That's a device and company with about as much credabity as an FiA Steward's ruling.
Seriously tainted goods.
Gizmondon't
They have a huge stigma to overcome and two slick polished competitors with deep pockets. If they try to attack the existing markets they'll get burnt... the only way I see this working is if, with the open architecture, it fosters a strong homebrew dev community and becomes the platform of choice for small games, apps and allows easy transferrence of "downloaded" media and ripped DVDs... slightly unethical from most publishers perspective, but getting Video on any other handheld is a pain and if this is as simple as copying a WMA or an AVI or adding a codec here and there that could be a compelling feature. Add to that cheap homebrew games and some quality AAA titles and It could be a winning formula... though that still that makes it a hardcore proposition and therefore niche so no massive sales
It will probably just end up being another huge money pit though but hey what do I know...
Re: Gizmondon't
Why are you even giving these mafia jokers the time of day?
Fingers Crossed
Personally I WANT to see this succeed. Well maybe not dominate the market, but at least do fairly well this time round.
I actually own the original Gizmondo (random Xmas present) I had heard about about it, but never thought of getting one.
But I'm glad I did get one (especially as it was free).
For one thing it works as a damn fine SatNav (in car and on foot)
The media functions are as good as the PSPs (video and audio)
It may look kind of ugly - but it is surprisingly comfortable to hold, and playing games on it feels a lot more natural than the DS and PSP.
And some of the games that were due to be released were very promising.
Unfortuantely I only ever got one game - Trail Blazer - which turned out to be a very addictive and good looking title.
It would be nice to see a handheld with a similar power to the PSP (but actually comfortable to play) and hopefully a good array of games.
I'm bored of my PSP, don't like half the games and when I do like them I can only play for a little while because its uncomfortable to use, and I haven't touched my DS in quite a while either.
Well it would be interesting to see how well it does this time around, and if they can get the backing of some reputable games companies and good games on it. Oh and good to hear about a new battery - the old one sucked.
Oh where to begin...
We should all actively encourage this lunacy!
It was a complete car crash (no pun intended) from beginning to end last time and made fantastic news!
Seriously, look how dull our industry's become without Gizmondo; buy outs, mergers, closures... All boring! Give us gangsters with no clue about games, investors obsessed with throwing their money away, and E3 porn booths!
I for one will be placing my fictitious pre-order at the first available opportunity.
Long live Gizmond... Oh.
Once a con, always a con!!
What is they say about fools and their money...
The games market is booming...lets take some bankers and
investors and fill them with some sales talk and squander their money as quick as possible. These guys should have been locked up the first time round.
Re: Once a con, always a con!!
I owned a Gizmondo for quite a while and I really, really liked it as a system. It made a nice change from the run of the mill and I had some good use out of it.
I'd be happy to see it back. As long as the company are all above board. The Gizmondo story is a good read.
Re: Re: Once a con, always a con!!
I must say, i've still got the sole Gizmondo demo unit they sent out to journalists from when I was a presenter on Game Network, they went bust before they could ask for it back. Batterys fcuked on it now though.
I ended up buying another off Dr. Ashen (the guy who reviews hand held knocks offs on Youtube)
People make fun of the system, but it was actually a good machine, It was doing the real world graphics with it's camera, long before Sony started on it. and blew machines like the N-Gage totally out of the water.
But the fact they were easier to mod than a PSP, made them all the more fun heh heh.
But it makes you think where the industry would be if "Momma Can I Mow the Lawn?" was released to the masses... Probably exactly the same place where it is now, but i thought i'd add that line for dramatic purposes.
anyone spot the fundamental PR mis-hit here?
'albeit without turning it on'....
so, they showed the formerly unknown Swedish journalist the OLD Gizmondo, and made up a load of stuff about what's inside it and what it is going to do (amazing Nvidia graphics, Android OS etc) WITHOUT TURNING IT ON.
Re: anyone spot the fundamental PR mis-hit here?
@ 9 - They were locked up. By chance, a new Gizmondo was announced as soon as they were back out again...
Re: Re: anyone spot the fundamental PR mis-hit here?
How about releasing all the supposed classic games that never made it out the last time this appeared?
I can't believe the people running the show will be any less inept than last time so despite loving handheld gaming will pass on this one again until the reviews (and scheduled releases) prove otherwise.
Just wait...
I'll bet Nintendo are ****ting themselves. By lunch their shares will have dipped 20 points on the Toppix 100...
