Platform holder celebrates securing first and second spots in the US August hardware sales battle
Nintendo has released an understated, though understandably chuffed, response the news that Nintendo’s DS and Wii claimed first and second spots respectively in the US August hardware charts, according to data from NPD.
“The positive public response to Nintendo DS and Wii has stayed strong throughout 2008,” Nintendo of America’s executive vice president of sales and marketing Cammie Dunaway stated. “New titles like Madden NFL 09 All-Play for Wii have joined top ten veterans like Wii Fit, demonstrating the wide and long-lasting appeal of Nintendo games.”
NPD figures show that DS and Wii sold 514,000 and 448,000 units each in August respectively. Lifetime sales of DS in the territory now number nearly 22 million, with Wii approaching the 12 million mark.

Miissing the point...
Companies lose money on the hardware. The trick is to sell less hardware but more software per unit. I believe in total sales (both hardware and software) Nintendo is a distant second.
REALLY missing the point...

Companies lose money on the hardware.
That's a very broad generalization, one which does not apply to handheld sytems(and i struggle to find any actual evidence it applies at all). that aside, if a company sells more hardware units, there are going to be more costomers for the software; that simply stands to reason. more customers=more sales the end.
No they don't.
Sony and Microsoft lose money on consoles ... Nintendo makes money on theirs.
