360 surprises analysts by outselling PS3 in August; platform holder hails price cuts
Microsoft is understandably delighted by its August sales victory over Sony’s PS3, and has highlighted the massive surge in Xbox 360 hardware sales in early September in its response to NPD’s August US sales figures.
Having been crowned the victor in its battle of Sony in August, Microsoft immediately sought to hammer home the fact that since it cut the price of its Xbox 360 range on September 3rd sales have climbed over 100 per cent, with sales of the low-end Arcade SKU increasing six fold.
As for August, Microsoft sold 195,000 Xbox units throughout the month, bringing lifetime US sales to a shade under 11 million. And despite Sony’s championing of its individual software attach rate ratios, Microsoft was keen to point out the trend-buckingly high attach rate enjoyed by its machine – it currently stands at eight games per console.
Its figures also highlight the fact that Xbox 360 claimed 45 per cent of all third party software sales throughout August.

its not rocket science, if you cut the price of a product and sales are steady the sales will grow due to the lower price,
this console has lost so much value and its great but i bought a console at full price 1 year ago and im very disillusioned by microsoft as im their customer but since ive already bought they dont care,
maybe costs have gone down
if costs have gone done on production, maybe for a change these savings are being past on to the customer, but in truth i think microsoft are that desperate to be number 1, they will do anything to beat sony, its crazy, still doesnt stop 360 red light issue, my mate bought an elite on sat, turned it on and guess what 3 red lights, i dont care what console you buy, what games you like, if you pay over £100 for an electrical product it should work, this is still a disgrace ! i dont have faith in MS not interested in what games or service they offer, fix your hardware
Re: maybe costs have gone down
@Steve - 3 light does not necessarily mean a permanent failure. It could mean you haven't got the AV in, or maybe the HDD is not in place. You would not believe the number of people I see who see 3 lights and jump to conclusions.
Re: Re: maybe costs have gone down
@Jonesy:
Welcome to the real world - prices on console ALWAYS go down.
Anyway, why should it matter to you what other people are paying for a console you already bought?
When you bought it you obviously thought it was value for money or you wouldn't have bought it at all.
I have never understood the logic of people complaining about a price cut on something they already bought: It just shows utter selfishness.
Arrgghh. This has made me mad. i need to lie down.
Re: Re: Re: maybe costs have gone down
What's funny is the people claiming MS is somehow desperate for sales because they've lowered the price by $50, while completely forgetting that the PS3 has actually lowered the price the same amount in a shorter amount of time. Yes, the PS3 lowered its price by $100 in ITS FIRST YEAR. The 360's price has now also been lowered by $100 (well, $120 for the Arcade) in OVER TWO YEARS.
That's a nice try, though.
300 percent rise. FOR REPLACEMENTS!
the rise is from people replacing there consoles. nothing more. why do u think its the arcade. they already have there hard drives. they just need a new system.
And your evidence for that claim...
@6: Perhaps you could provide the source of this sales information?
Have you seen figures to show that the number of XBox Live users has not increased by a single user after all these sales? Or is this just the typical "OMG, MS fails with RROD, LOL" type assumption?
