Slowing GTA IV sales could boost EA bid

US news outlet speculates that disappointing Grand Theft Auto IV sales might dent Take 2’s resistance to EA takeover

Despite lifetime sales of nearly 8.5 million copies worldwide, the recently announced August NPD figures have raised fears that sales of Take 2’s Grand Theft Auto IV have slowed unexpectedly – raising concerns that it might affect EA’s ongoing bid to acquire the publisher.

CNN reports that Take 2 has been using GTA IV’s success as its reason for arguing that EA’s $2 billion undervalues the firm. However, if despite its phenomenal start Rockstar’s game fails to reach its lifetime sales expectations, Take 2’s position may weaken.

GTA IV was the 46th best selling game in North America in August, down from the 45th position it held in July.

“As a must-have game, we expect GTA IV sales to continue at an energetic pace,” a Take-Two spokesperson said. EA refused to comment on the story.

Did these analysts not take into consideration how much the game will start selling on both the Xbox360 and PS3 once the extra download content which is due within the next few months becomes available i wonder?

One should also take into account the upcoming PC version.

Sounds like a bad Saints Row rip-off to me.

I wouldnt worry about the PC version so much. I don't want to sound like Bruce Everiss or anything, but bittorent should take care of all the bulk of purchases on the PC. Look at Oblivion. All the protected DLC for the PC was ripped and made available after day 1.

I'm guessing Christmas will boost sales, as will any console price drops. How do GTA4 sales compare to GTA3 and the same point in it's lifecycle.
