New UK 360 price cuts on the way

New UK 360 price cuts on the way

Woolworths to sell to Arcade for £129.99, Pro for £169.99 and Elite for £229.99

It looks as though there’s going to be another wave of Xbox 360 price cuts in time for Christmas in the UK – at Woolworths, at least.

According to a leaked scan of the new Woolworths magazine by a cheeky employee, the Xbox 360 Arcade will be put on sale at £129.99, with the 60GB Xbox 360 dipping to £169.99. The Elite will be cut to £229.99.

That would make the family-focused Arcade model £50 cheaper than Nintendo’s Wii in the region.

Microsoft this month dropped prices in the US to similar levels, resulting in a 600 per cent sales of the Arcade model.

Woolworths told MCV in a statement:

"The Christmas 2008 Woolworths Big Red Book is not released until the first week of October and, until that date, remains a confidential document.

"There are several draft editions in existence, with prices, products and descriptions varying dependent on the draft.

"Woolworths will not comment directly on the speculation that has appeared on various gaming websites as it is commercially sensitive information."

So, does Woolworths know something the rest of us don't?

Anyway, these are very cheap prices, but I'm still not convinced by the three-model line-up. The Elite is just not worth it at £1 per GB of storage. 60GB is surely plenty for most users. And the Arcade... the only people I know of who've bought on is to replace a broken machine they've still got the HDD for. Nice that it's there, but I'm sure it wouldn't be shifting anything like the numbers it does if 360s had been a bit more reliable in the first place.

This does leave Sony looking grossly overpriced though, blu-ray or not. And even the Wii is looking expensive next to the 360 60GB, although I suspect the Wii will still sell well this Christmas because, well, people want a Wii - the 360 isn't a straightforward substitute, whatever the price.

I think we'd all welcome it. It could be so many things though.

PR Stunt.

Microsoft testing the water.

Woolies hanging out their balls to show off how much bigger than Morrisons theirs are.

At lastly - true.

Any of the above you've got to hand it to the cheeky little monkey who scanned it.

The Arcade console is of no use to anyone - they may aswell be giving it away for free - I'm surprised they're even still selling it!

Methinks this is an act of desperation by M$ on the run up to Christmas - they don't even have the casual range of games to compete with the Wii

Also, are these 3 console SKUs in order of reliability? LOL!

there is no real need for 3 consoles that all do the same job, just have 1 console and offer the upgrades as add ons, such a waste of time, cant remember last time i sold an arcade pack, mind you sold an elite last week it came back with guess what ???
yep had to replace it,great console

The Arcade is of no use to anyone? Don't talk complete rubbish. It's abundantly clear from such a ridiculous comment that you don't work in the industry. Save the fanboy ravings for CVG and other forums like it.

Has anyone else got to the point now that whenever you see someone use the cliched and tired "M$" in their message, it triggers a response that sees you ignore the rest of what that person has said and immediately 'bounce' to the next post?
