US: DS breaks August hardware sales record

Nintendo’s handheld sticks two fingers up to the credit crunch as it becomes the best ever August performer

Figures from US sales analyst NPD group have shown that Nintendo’s DS sold more hardware units in August than any machine has ever sold throughout the month in North America.

Videogamer reports that DS sold 518,000 units in the territory last month – beating the previous record set by PS2 when in August 2002 it sold 454,300 units. It’s also the first time any console has sold over half a million units in August since NPD began keeping records.

The achievement is all the more impressive considering the growth slowdown felt by the games industry in the US.

August was a good month for Nintendo in North America, though it was Xbox 360’s sales victory over PS3 that made the headlines.

Record of 454,300 set by the PSP in August 2002? From memory, the PSP was released in 2005 (in the US)... I'm tipping you mean the PS2, although I don't have the sales figures. Just a heads-up :).

i doubt it, r4 is still on sale on amazon and ebay, we have customers comin in every day asking if we sell R4 they buy the console and are never seen again, even had a guy who wanted to do an insurance scam, collect the cash and just download all the games rather than replace them, we dont sell many ds games at all, you can buy a ds lite with 200 games already on the R4 on ebay, people dont even think its illegal, same for wii and flashed 360s around this area, i hate it.
