Pair of Condemned 2 commercials slammed – and removed – by Advertising Standards Agency
The UK’s Advertising Standards Agency has outlawed two ‘brutal’ and ‘realistic’ Sega TV adverts for Condemned 2.
The watchdog received just nine complaints over the duo of ads, with three people recommending that the ads were ‘inappropriate for broadcast at any time’.
The ads appeared in post-9pm and post-11pm slots respectively. The longer, post-11pm version showed three punches from a first person perspective, with a hooded figure holding a brick aloft then bringing it down towards the camera.
The ASA concluded: ‘… the ads contained scenes of graphic and brutal violence which, although computer-generated, were realistic in appearance.
‘We noted in particular that both ads showed a man punching another on the floor and blood splattering on the screen as a man was beaten with a club and considered viewers were likely to find those scenes offensive and distressing and to see them as condoning real violence and cruelty.’

It’s the banks that need regulation, not TV!
“three people recommending that the ads were ‘inappropriate for broadcast at any time’.”
Who were these three people: God, Allah and Buddha!
I thought we lived in a democracy!
Re: It’s the banks that need regulation, not TV!
Pretty controversial post there JD...
Re: Re: It’s the banks that need regulation, not TV!
Would the ads be banned if they had just 9 complaints about an advert for an 18 rated violent movie?
I think not.
Re: Re: Re: It’s the banks that need regulation, not TV!
Always makes me giggle how they "ban" ads like 6 months after the game's been on sale :)
Re: Re: It’s the banks that need regulation, not TV!
I totally agree that this should not have been used as part of an advert. In the context of an advert there is no consent from the viewer for their participation. if the first person perspective of these adverts was not used then it probably would have been more acceptable as then it it just showing the viewer the content rather than trying to immerse them in it.
Re: Re: Re: Re: It’s the banks that need regulation, not TV!
If myself and 5 other people complain about the misleading adverts for claims direct, can we get them banned also :D
Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: It’s the banks that need regulation, not TV!
I realise censorship of violence is a massive sore point in the gaming community (and justifiably so), but these adverts really are pretty damn violent, more so than any trailer for a film would get away with. I think they're being pretty reasonable by banning it in this case.
Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: It’s the banks that need regulation, not
It may be true that these ads should have been banned, but the thing that annoys me about this is the following:
"viewers were likely to find those scenes offensive and distressing and to see them as condoning real violence and cruelty."
Finding the scenes offensive? Fine. Finding the scenes distressing? Possibly. Seeing the scenes of a computer game and concluding that it is condoning real violence and cruelty in real life? Give me a break!
Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: It’s the banks that need regulation,
I think the term ‘Get a grip on reality’ was what you were looking for!
Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: It’s the banks that need regulation,
yeah...sure... take it out because all we want in tv is people saying that there product is this and that and trying to make us love it. When something different comes about, it is condemned. The thing about violence and stuff is just a tiny part of something like let or make the viewer think. But as we see here, even the intelligent gamers cannot buy the more challenging advertisement, calling them pretty damn violent...give me a break too, it would be nice to stop being so narrow-minded and passive "thinkers"...

@10: "When something different comes about, it is condemned."
Well, Condemned 2, actually, but take your point ;-)
I saw these, they were pretty horrific. Still doubt Sega cares now!
Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: It’s the banks that need reg
as this game has been out for months.....
who cares.
Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: It’s the banks that need
Damn censorship. Its a violent game, more to the point its a first person violent game. And the comment above queried the advert being in first person and violent because.... you dont wanna watch change the channel.
Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: It’s the banks that
The turn the channel arguement really isnt valid here because you have no warning as to what advert is being shown and by the time this comes on you are already watching it, plus most people will stick with it out of curiousity until either it ends or they do decide to turn it over. Im in no way against violence in videogames just that i dont think it should be forced upon people without warning.
Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: It’s the banks t
“forced upon people without warning.” You really let humanity down with comments like that. Indicating that you (we) have no control over what you watch, and you’re a slave of television adverts! As this advert was played out after 11pm it wasn’t directed at children and therefore NO NEED FOR A NANNY!
We are lucky enough to live in a day and age where most of have remote controls for our TV’s allowing us to switch the channels when it suits us, so rather than slow down and observe the car crash, why not drive on next time!
Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: It’s the ban
JD - your criticism of Rob's comment (#14) isn't really fair. He was making the point that a viewer has no warning of the content of an advert until it is too late. Adverts are usually quick and punchy and designed to grab your attention whether you like it or not. I don't think he is letting humanity down as you state - a 30 second commercial is not that easy to avoid. If so there would be many annoying commercials out there I would never have seen...but sadly I have sat through them...usually more than once. So have most other people...maybe not you.And if it was shown after 11pm it doesn't mean people can't be offended - later viewing times are designed to stop children viewing it, but for those of us up after 11pm we have a choice of what program we decide to watch and not all of these are violent. porn etc. Some people may still find violence offensive - even if watching TV later at night. Yes of course you can change the channel and chose not to watch a certain movie, but it isnt that easy for a commercial. What were these ads shown during ? If it was texas chainsaw massace then it would be a bit hypocritical, but if it was during Driving Miss Daisy or whatever then such complaints may be warranted.Anyways - is anyone even reading this thread anymore ?
Re: who are these people?
I was one of the 3 people who thought it not fit viewing at any time. This advert was shown during Jack Dee Live at the Apollo. I am female with a GSOH but no particular wish to watch violence, especially from the 1st person perspective! I own a PS2, a DS and a Wii but I do not choose to play or watch this type of stuff. The complaint and the ASA adjudication made no difference to SEGA anway, since by the time they processed it, the advert was no longer being shown!
