Sonic Collection heading to next-gen?

Retailer listings suggest Sega is readying a boxed outing for its 16bit Sonic classics on PS3 and Xbox 360

Many of Sega’s classics are already enjoying great success on the download services offered by the current crop of home consoles, but now rumours are suggesting that a boxed compilation of its 16bit Sonic hits is heading to PS3 and Xbox 360.

A listing on Amazon, spotted by StrategyInformer, speaks of an upcoming release for a title called Sonic Genesis Collection for both next-gen consoles. Genesis is, of course, the North American name for Mega Drive.

Sega has enjoyed success with a similar boxed product in the past in the shape of 2002’s Sonic Mega Collection on GameCube and 2004’s Sonic Mega Collection + on PS2.

The publisher has plenty of Sonic games to choose from, including Mega Drive-era titles such as Sonic the Hedgehog, Sonic & Knuckles and Sonic Spinball. It’s also possible that Sega could decide to bundle some of its later titles, including perhaps the previously Dreamcast-only Sonic Adventure series.

And MCV would love to see a re-release for under-rated Saturn classic Sonic R.

Good call! For me the fight for the title of best ever Sonic game is a three-way brawl between Sonic CD, Sonic 2 and Sonic R. All awesome!

Sonic R, Travellers Tails should be commended for what they achieved on that essentially 2D platform!

Another sonic oddity for me was ‘Sonic Fighters’ which could do with being on a collection disc. Though my absolute favourite was Sonic CD which was massive in scale, had animations for cut scenes a cheesy j-pop theme song and the best incarnation of metal sonic!

Also I never played it, but was Choatix form the 32X days any good?

My order of preference would be:

1. Sonic CD
2. Sonic 3 & Sonic 4 combined!
3. Sonic 2 & Lost chapters
4. Sonic R
5. Sonic Fighters

DJ - both Sonic the Fighters and Sonic CD were collected into the Sonic Gems Collection for the GameCube.

The Sonic Adventure games weren't 'Dreamcast only', as both were released on the Gamecube, albeit after the DC had died. :(
