‘No more company Ferraris!’

Gizmondo boss Carl Freer tells MCV all about his plans for the console's rebirth

Gizmondo boss Carl Freer has described his masterplan for the launch of the new version of the firm’s handheld – and in a reference to the opulence of days gone by, promised, “No more company Ferraris!”

Freer headed up the launch of the ill-fated Gizmondo console back in 2005, alongside others including Stefan Eriksson.

Now, in an exclusive interview with MCV, Freer has revealed that the new version of the Gizmondo is due for release later this year – and that the company’s previous mistakes and astounding spending power have been rectified.

“There are too many improvements [over the old machine] to mention,” he said. “I think the big change is the “open-source” environment we will be offering, as well as some serious improvements on the component reliability side. Oh, and no company Ferraris!”

As revealed on this site last week, the design of the new machine is very similar to the first Gizmondo, but includes a newer version of nVidia's graphics chip and a new battery.

Owners of the old Gizmondo can even swap their old battery for a new one free of charge.

The system will come with a choice of two operating systems – Windows CE 6.0 or Google's new Android OS – and will be open, so any Window game or emulation can run on it.

Expect more from our exclusive interview later today.

Which retailers will actually bother to carry this?

Seriously?! Retail was very sceptical the first time round and you could get it "exclusively" at Gamestation and John Lewis. ie All the other retailers including GAME wouldn't touch it. After its unmitigated failure at retail, who is going to want to stock it as a gaming device? Google Android is the big buzz, so maybe some mobile phone stores will pick it up?!

Performance of non-Nintendo or Sony handhelds has consistently worsened. Neo Geo Pocket > Nokia N Gage > Gizmondo.

He is a crook and his company is a sham.

It was astonishing enough last time around that so few of us realised the Emperor had no clothes on.

Surely, nobody's going to fall for this again?

It will be tremendously difficult for them to break the negative stereotype they created with the initial release of Gizmondo. A bigger challenge lies in overcoming the Nintendo obstacle. . .handhelds tend to be absorbed en-mass by casual gamers. . . not those looking to create their own handheld games. That is, typically, reserved for those who want to showcase their prowess through creating Mods, Maps, XNA games and the like. I wish them luck as, for me, working on an additional successful platform is always welcome; but there are huge boulders to push up hill to make this thing work the second time around.

Too bizarre for fiction: last week a senior executive at Gizmondo Stefan Eriksson resigned, and now its been discovered that he was once involved with the Swedish mafia, having been convicted in 1993 of "financial fraud related to counterfeit money and an attempted $3m scam on a financial institution." Two other employees, who have also resigned, have mafia connections, including Johan Enander, "described as the Uppsala Mafia's 'Torpedo', who was a debt collector for the group and was convicted of blackmail and assault" Appropriately, he was the head of security for Gizmondo.

Come on. This is just crap Tim. Crap company, crapster Freer. Why give this thief any publicity? A personal friend of mine lost a whole load of money 'investing' in Gizmondo. The day that tosser Freer pays him back, then I may stop hating him. Until then, sorry but you know, I know, we all know that this is just a waste of ink.

@10: Hi Andy, Tend to shy away from commenting on these things, but thought it worth my justifying the story:

MCV is IN NO WAY endorsing Gizmondo or backing the company's aims. Let's make that clear from the off.

However, we decided that Carl Freer and Gizmondo's return to the industry would be of great interest to the trade - for a whole spectrum (good, bad... laughable?) of reasons. 'Bad' seems to be a favourite here. But be honest... would you rather know or not know what he's up to?

I'm writing for a news organisation, so I can't colour my copy with too much in the way of opinion or information that may land us in legal difficulties.

But readers are certainly welcome to discuss (vent?) their views on the Boards – within reason, of course.

Tim - I think the choice of headline was enough to tell us how the author really feels about the story. After all the pain and suffering they caused the first time round, for him to make a joke of that situation shows them for what they are.

Hmmm that's very interesting at least that it will offer the Android OS choice though. However, I'm not sure if anybody (retail or consumers) will want to touch this newer device now mind - tricky call this one.

@tim: one has to say, very professional headline then, with great content, showing exactly, what news headlines should contain - btw: did you ever read real newspapers? Would a real newspaper publish the return of Gizmondo in the same form? I doubt it. That was certainly not professional journalism. I hope, your "exclusive" interview will be professional and you will have the "cojones" to ask Carl not only the soft questions, but also the real ones. Some readers kindly have provided links in the comments and I am sure, you will be doing your research, like a real news magazine, too.

So no Ferrari's 'eh? ^_^ What about massive celeb parties? ^_^

To be honest, I read some of the GizmondoForum.com posts after the days of the Giz's decline, and it did look like it was turning into a hobbyist's platform. I can't imagine it being mainstream, but occupying a quiet niche in GP32's corner of the woods, a possibility.

P.S. Will we ever see Colors?

Does anyone remember the Tapwave Zodiac? That was the last great open (PalmOS) game handheld. They actually caused Sony to announce the PSP early! Gizmondo was a joke then, and still is. I wish Tapwave had a real sales team - their hardware was amazing, and all the Palm game guys wanted to write games for it.
