CEO Graham Hopper says Ultimate Band is not competing with Rock Band and Guitar Hero

Disney Interactive Studios CEO Graham Hopper has said that consumers may be put off buying rhythm action games by the prospect of using an additional peripheral.

It will fail... Peripherals ad to the value of the product. The whole point behind games like guitar hero and rockband etc, are to give the player a sense of them actually performing. Peripherals help to achieve this...

Everybody loves a little variety in their games, the trouble now is that variety seems to be rather expensive!
Getting rock band will cost you just as much as a new games console, so I can understand why someone who works for Disney is concerned with segregating certain types of software to customers who have large budgets.

When Wii Music hits the shelves, I think people will begin to see possibilities of life OUTSIDE accessories (lol). Seriously though, can you imagine if they made a game called "Air Guitar Hero" for wii where you don't actually press buttons, you just wave your arms about with the nunchuk and the wii remote and get ranked on your posing and air-guitar ability.
Something like this can really freshen things up, because I think that as soon as they start having the ability of putting your own tracks in and having the game map custom games to your own tracks -- the genre will slowly start to die.
After all, there is only so much life in buying music packs of songs you don't really like. The market will eventually demand something more next year, putting in your own songs and playing along to them. And I think that once that feature comes out - its going to be hard for this genre to stay fresh.
So, with a bit of competition and thinking outside of the box - the guitar hero genre will not end up becoming like the dance dance revolution genre - which is pretty much just limited to a few arcades now.
