Official GFK-ChartTrack data shows Wii out in front of 360 and PS3 with 3.6m installed base

New GfK ChartTrack sales data has revealed that the installed base of current generation consoles has more than doubled in the space of a year.

The data, which comes from GAME Group financial presentation, the current UK installed console base shared by the Wii, Xbox 360, PS3, DS and PSP equals 17.3 million units, up from 8.8 million last September.

According to Edge, in the year since September 2007, the Wii’s installed base has jumped from 1.1 to 3.6 million units.

During the same 12 months, the Xbox 360’s installed base has grown from 1.3 to 2.3 million, the PS3’s from 0.4 to 1.4 million, the DS’s from 3.8 to 7.1 million, and the PSP’s from 2.2 to 2.9 million.

It says 'Official GFK-ChartTrack data' but then the data actually comes from GAME?

Could be me but just a bit confused, but overall Nintendo definently has made the biggest change to the industry with the Wii its a great product I own the 360 and the Wii and both are great gaming experiences.

In fact this gen I think many own more than one console and to own all 3 would be awesome.

Hi,

The info is official, but ChartTrack would only usually release it to clients (such as GAME) and ask them not to reproduce it. In this case GAME made publicly available (with permission, no doubt).

Multiple console ownership is definitely a growing trend, and I think a big part of it is down to the Wii's distinctiveness.

The PS3 and 360 might be pretty much interchangable from a gaming perspective, but the Wii is offering some really unique experiences and I think gamers from casual to hardcore are starting to realise that having any less than two consoles (one of them a Wii) in this generation means you're missing out on a lot of great games.

But the Wii doesn't need what we would traditionally class as 'great' games. It has simple-to-understand 'mum-friendly' games that are easy to get into and that you can play in small bursts. This is a type of game that, up until the Wii, was becoming a rarer and rarer thing as MS and Sony strived for raw power and epic adventures and graphical masterpieces that made use of such advanced hardware.

The Wii audience hates/fears what we gamers class as 'great' games. They want simplistic games that require no real investment of time, patience or practise, so they can have fun immediately. They don't want to sit alone with Halo 3, spending hours figuring out what the buttons do so that the social aspect can finally turn into actual competitive play, rather than continual humiliation at the hands of ****y teenagers.

Some people want less. More is too confusing.

some thoughtful and thought provoking comments, which is a very refreshing change.

On the dual-ownership point, what are the opinions on this being thw Wii an DS, as opposed to Wii and a n other?
