New DS confirmed tomorrow

EXCLUSIVE: MCV source in the Far East guarantees the news retailers wanted to hear

Nintendo will announce a new, updated version of its DS console at a press conference tomorrow morning, MCV has learnt.

According to our impeccable source in Japan, Satoru Iwata will make the announcement at 5am UK time – as first predicted by MCV last month.

Little is known about the machine's exact extra functions, but we do know the product will be the ‘multimedia’ model mentioned by Nikkei this week – with extra storage and a camera function.

The launch date and price of the machine is still unknown – but it will be a surprise to see its arrival delayed until after Christmas.

It is thought that Nintendo is particularly keen internally to give the system a boost in Japan, where it has been trailing PSP in recent months.

The same can’t be said in the UK, however, where the latest ChartTrack figures highlight the console as the most successful in the territory – with a whopping 7.1 million installed base.

Prediction

Prediction - the GBA slot will be replaced by an SD card slot, to hold the photos, music and bookmarks for the built-in camera, music player and web browser respectively.

Also, moving the DS's SD card into a firmware-upgraded Wii will then give access to all of these files from the Wii's Photo-player and web browser.

Think about it. Loss of a GBA slot will only reduce funtionality in the following areas:

Rumble pack - has hardly been used but could be built into the new console

The old web browser and the Play-Yan/MP3 player - both no longer necessary under the above assumptions

The Guitar Hero and Space Invaders Extreme peripherals - These are third party, so will Nintendo care?

GBA games - Nintendo are probably planning to offer GBA games on download (in fact the excellent Japanese GBA game Orbital is already effectively available on US Wii Ware).

Removing the GBA slot would be the worst move in my opinion. Of course Nintendo will care if people can't play one of the bigger christmas titles (Guitar Hero) on their new console. If they don't, then they should.

they will not launch in Europe until after xmas, so they can maximise the xmas market and get rid of the DS lite stock (same thing they did with the DS lite)

If this does become fact, then they'll have to release before Xmas as it will kill DS sales stone dead. PSPs are starting to slow in Japan as people wait for the PSP3000, so the same will happen to the new DS.

I hope the GBA slot isn't removed. If it is, I most likely will not buy a new one. The rest of it would have to be very attractive. I currently have a first gen Red DS and could maybe do with an upgrade, kind of a bulky thing. I'd love it if you could put videos on it and watch them, that'd be great.

I'm Guitar Hero will come in two flavours - one that clips into GBA slot and one that clipts into SD slot - the device will still clip to the same external points.

Seems an unusual time to announce it, with parents entering the age old debate of what to buy for christmas.
Mmmmm shall i buy this for little Jonny or would that just be stupid with a new model on the way and Nintendo having just announced no pre Christmas price reductions on the soon to be outdated Lite.
