US: PlayStation sales 30% up on targets

SCEA boss Tretton warns of possible stock shortages as PS3 and PSP continue to fly off the shelf

Sales of both the PS3 and PSP are almost a third higher than Sony had estimated in its year-to-date predictions, SCEA boss Jack Tretton has stated.

Reuters reports that the US arm of Sony is now very confident that it will meet, or even exceed, its estimations despite the global economic downturn. The numbers it is aiming for are 10 million PS3 and 15 million PSP sales by the end of its financial year in March 2009.

“We are in good shape for that number worldwide,” Tretton stated. “We are tracking at 100 per cent up over last year, about 30 per cent ahead of where we should be. So sales could slow down and we will still hit our number.

“I'd say we are able to meet somewhere between 80-90 percent demand, based on how things are trending. I think people are going to question every dollar that they spend, but they are going to look for value in return.”

I guess their targets are quite low then.
Seems to me that Sony are in the 'making money' phase of the PS3 lifetime. They are selling PS3's in reasonable numbers at the current price (in europe its 1:1 with 360 - Though this may change given th eprice drops from MS) so why drop the price just for market share? They have enough PS3's out there for the developers & publishers to make games for and make money from it, so steady away!
It doesn't help the fanboy, but it helps Sony's financials no end.

Wow Mike. I fail to see fanboyism in anything I said. Unless you take exception to the first line? I was simply pointing out that Sony seems to have changed strategy and are happy not dominating the market at this time.

Having said that - Tretton has a long history of BullS***ting. Remember the PS3 Launch "If you can infd a PS3 on the shelf. . . ."
