DSi to be region-locked

Nintendo confirms new software will only work with territory-specific hardware

Nintendo has confirmed that new downloadable and boxed software for its DSi console will be region-locked.

A spokesperson for the firm told CVG:

"DSi software (software that is only compatible with DSi) is region locked, eg: European DSi software can only be played on European DSi consoles.

"Nintendo DS software however is region free so you can play any DS software on DSi from any region. You can also browse the Internet on your DSi wherever you are in the world and exchange your photos with friends from around the world."

The spokesperson continued: "DSi is region locked because DSi embeds net communication functionality within itself and we are intending to provide net services specifically tailored for each region. Also because we are including parental control functionality for Nintendo DSi and each region has its unique age limit made by different independent."

not sure if I care or not

Not sure if I'm that bothered. I haven't imported for the DS at all. It's only really an issue if something doesn't get a European release.

Having said that, the reason they've given for region-locking the console are pants. Both of those are solvable in other ways without region locking games. It's just an excuse to keep prices inflated in certain regions. (namely ours)

I know more people that have imported their DS's than people who have imported titles. So this type of incompatibility issue could cause a problems as the DS is currently seen as platform with out boarders by most people.
