Xbox 360 SKU remains at £39.99; Promotion to last for two weeks
Supermarket chain Morrisons has slashed the price of FIFA ’09 on PlayStation 3 to £25, MCV can reveal.
The deal is set to run for two weeks, and follows Tesco and Asda’s FIFA price promotions, which came to an end on Monday.
“This offer was a last minute decision,” explained a Morrisons spokesperson. “It appears on our latest best buy leaflet, and is set to run over two weekends.”
Morrisons ran an equally aggressive promotion last month, when it cut the price of all chart titles in half.

Yay! Lets devalue the market even more! Way to go, Morrisons.

Fabulous News! :-)

"On our best buy leaflet" "Last Minute decision"
Errrrr. No,
good timming
ive just sold out of my tesco / woolworhts stock, so no need to call centresoft adnd wait until tomorrow for my order, ill go get it from morrisons, ha ha
Re: Re: Re: Re: That's why dad's go to Morrisons
Obviously the winners here are the consumers. But what gets me is that they don't need to do this as the game would sell at full price if everyone refrained from heavy discounting.
Why don't the supermarkets heavily discount the food items which would increase their footfall no end and may well result in games benefitting from the extra consumer activity rather than using the games as the carrot on the stick.
The thing is consumers will expect games at low prices all the time as a result which means if you start going down this road you have to be able to sustain it.
Can they? I don't know
ive said it before
ive said it before on here, there is room for all of us to make profit on a large title like this, and there is no need to discount, i think with the credit crunch i would rather see food discounted, i wont buy food from supermarkets as i dont agree with them, but i will buy my game stock from there if its cheaper than suppliers, i agree the game would have sold what ever price, so it seems crazy, but i will cash in on this
Re: ive said it before
@6
My god - the same arguments, the same short-sightedness. Yes, the game would sell at full price, But Morrisons want you to shop with them, so by selling the game cheaply they'll get more folk through the door and make up their loss on the game with the other goods they hope you'll buy.
Discounting food would simply not work. Lots of folk will pop in to buy FIFA and end up picking up some other shopping at the same time. They're not going to attract the same number of people by discounting, I dunno, ornages, or bath sponges, are they? General weekly shopping goods do not make a supermarket a destination for shoppers. Cheap games will.
And this argument about devaluing games is simply ridiculous. If when the likes of Far Cry 2 and LittleBigPlanet come out nowhere decides to discount, then people will still pick them up. But if someone does discount then people will most likely pick them up there.
Sales and promotions are common. If someone on the High Street sells Wii's for £100 one week then sales don't stop the following week when the price goes back up to £180. If there's a bargain out there people will grab it, for sure, but the lack of a bargain isn't going to stop many purchases.
rubbish
i was i tesco when fifa came out a que of over 50 customers and everyone bought fifa and walked out, so no matter how supermarkets explain the marketing, it doesnt work
@9
ha ha ha yeah i hate EA, terrible ports, terrible re-hashed games, always over priced at suppliers, maybe dead space will prove me wrong but EA are normally crap, mirrors edge looks terrible, and as for their online service ha what service, thats why they are the biggest publisher cause they are tight and wont spend the cash
Re: @9
I think discounting leading brands of food and drink and introducing multibuys would work because since the credit crunch I have certainly noticed the increase in my food bill. We all need to survive and the more offers and cheaper that certain brands are offered for the more people will shop. The flipside of this is that other areas of the stores will be visited and because games like Fifa are so well marketed sales will not be affected.
By all means offer a small saving on games but there is no need for heavy discounting. GTA 4 wasn't heavily discounted and I don't believe its sales were affected.
Re: Re: @9
The reason why supermarkets will not massively cut prices on food is because it is essential goods. Unlike computer games you need to buy them so there is no real need for the supermarkets to reduce the price as long as they are relatively competitive with the rest of the market. People dont need to buy computer games they just want to which is why supermarkets will target this sector and other non essential goods for large price cuts to make people more likely to buy them.
Re: PES the best footy game come on
I as a PES fan for many years know that FIFA 09 kicks PES clean out of the water. The game PES has no or little effort put into it & you can no longer say that PES is better than FIFA & bang on about FIFA being a poor game its not worth a fiver "shut up" & play the game because I know that theres no way if you are a footy fan you can claim PES is better, FIFA is the new KING. The game online is quality 10 vs 10 or 5 vs 5 the usual 1 on 1 & it is so much better online than PES. Oh shall I add the team names, if I want to play as my team then its FIFA. Konami need to sort PES out just as EA have with FIFA.
I know you have to pay that bit more with the indies but you guys are the ones who where their selling me games when the supermarkets didnt stock games, the knowledge & the fact I can try before I buy, I will stick with the indies keep up the hard work in trying times.
Re: Re: PES the best footy game come on
@ 8 "And this argument about devaluing games is simply ridiculous."
The above comment clearly shows how very little knowledge you have about the games industry both inside and out of retail and the effects this kind of discounting can have long term.
Some friendly advice; only post on topics you have any idea about.
Re: Re: Re: PES the best footy game come on
Nice one, brother has cleared them out for me and sending them over. Keep it up Morrisons never got stock so cheap.
Re: Re: Re: Re: PES the best footy game come on
@10
Obviosuly those queuing up first thing to buy the game cheaply are not those Tesco is targeting. All the subsequent shoppers who have been in since most definitely are, though. If the strategy didn't work then supermarkets wouldn't have been doing it for years, would they? Trust me, it's sound business for them.
@12
Stevie - no offense, but we all know you're an indie. It makes the whole indie sector seem a bit ridiculous to hear you speak like such a fanboy. Although I wouldn't say it myself, I've been told before that the reason the indie sector struggles is that it's populated by games fans running games shops instead of businessmen running game shops. the few proper businessmen involved in the sector, like O'Brien and McCabe, are doing very well for themselves. You certainly wouldn't hear them talking all this trash talk about EA. They're the biggest publisher in the world - that suggests they're doing something right, no?
@14
You're spot on. I'm guessing you're not an indie as you're not blinded by misguided resentment!!!
@16
No, that's not right. I know lots about the sector, more than you I'd go as far to say. The fact is that I disagree with you. Discounting has never harmed the consumer. The only person it harms is the independent retailer. And whilst I feel sorry for indies, I'm certainly not willing to subsidise their businesses by paying more than I have to. This is all the nature of capitalism - it's happened in other sectors and now it's happening in gaming. I just wish indies would stop talking of injustice and face up to the reality of not just the games industry, but also the way of the world it seems!
Re: ha ha ha h
@16 " I know lots about the sector, more than you I'd go as far to say."
I seriously doubt that. You're sweeping statements about the independent sector and that this scenario only effects the 'indies' is proof of that.
@ 18
you dont have a clue my friend you really dont, maybe you should come and work for 1 week in an indie store close to tesco, morrisons, and enjoy the abuse you get due to price cuts, its no fun
Re: @ 18
My last comment should of been directed @ 18, simple typo. My bad.
Re: Re: @ 18
@21
The fact is, though, that even if I worked at an indie store for a week, at the end of it I'm still going to buy FIFA from Morrisons for £25 rather than at a specialist for £40. This is at the heart of what I'm getting at - you all seem so angry at consumers, simply because they're choosing to pay the lowest possible price for something! Like you all don't do that in your day to day lives!?!
@Stevie
I'm not saying that a trade price of £33+VAT is fair to you guys - it's almost certainly not. But Sainsbury's or Tescos buys tens of thousands of units per order - of course they're going to get them cheaper. It's the same in EVERY industry in EVERY sector in EVERY corner of the earth.
@20
Well, it's up to you whether you believe me or not. I haven't worked in the indie sector for a long time now but certainly know plenty about it. It seems to me that indies get very agitated, but seemingly have little constructive response, when the realities of global trading and bulk buying are pointed out to them. And all too often they attack the consumer, which is painfully short-sighted. What would you suggest the answer to all of this is?
Re: Re: @ 15
Pes 2009 has only had one review yet, as far as I'm aware and that was when the game was still incomplete. They have fixed all the flaws from 08 and added new stuff too. Much better animations and AIfor a start. A proper edit mode also means the license issue doesn't really matter if your prepared to put a bit of effort into it. Fifa has only just included a power bar ffs!!! the pases always go to another player etc etc, it sucks. Showpony trickse useless in a game, its whats under the bonnet that counts, PES has always delivered ( i still played 08 for 15 seasons of ML doing treble for last 12, too easy, yes, but still ENJOYABLE, thats the main thing....09 is much tougher with improved goalies and AI defences so I rest my case. FIFA is like a child emperor, has all the power and no idea what to do with it so seeks help from advisors ( PES)
Re: Re: Re: @ 15
@ 24
Konami have already stated that the demo on LIVE & PSN is from the final build and if you've played the demo you'll know that PES 09 trips, stumbles and falls over itself in so many way it's not even funny. Below par visuals, sloppy animation, skitish ball control, poor presentation, in fact it's an even further step backwards for this once great series. FIFA, while not without it's faults, has evolved, PES on the otherhand has devolved.
Re: Re: Re: Re: @ 15
I'm sorry if this seems fanboysih, (is that a word!) but the pes demo was ****. The graphics were terrible and for once the game play wasn't as good as fifa. And what with pretty much no licenses for any teams why the **** would you buy it over fifa. Especially now you can get fifa for £25 from ****ing morrisions.
And for the record, I've always been a fan of the pes games, I preferred all the previous pes games to fifa's offering. But this time, konami have simply removed the "8" from the end of 200 and replaced it with a "9"
Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: @ 15
I'd argue that Fifa as a brand is devalued automatically now - you can pick up early version for the PS2 for under a quid, and last years version for around £15 new, £10 preowned, and each year Fifa has about 1 month of not heavily discounted sales each year before becoming offer of the week etc in the specialists. This year everyone jumped the gun, big deal. In the same way we'll see key UBIsoft titles discounted within weeks of release and suchlike.
Ultimately price wars are good for consumers and retailers need to adapt or die. The prevailing attitude on many MCV comments posts is that indy retailers somehow have a god given right to exist and should be helped, allowed to do whatever they want etc Why? No videogames retailers is crucial to the economy, and no amount of self justification is going to convince consumers that you HAVE to buy Morrisons stock to sell. General people hate people buying up stuff to sell on eBay - indies buying supermarket stock up are no better.
If I was an indy (I'm not, I wouldnt start up in a dying retail sector) I wouldn't stock new games at all now. Deal in preowned, you actually make money and you can practice your own economics and pricing.
I can also look at the titles for this year and predict which ones are going to see the heaviest pricing action - so why can't so many others in the trade?
Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: @ 25 *26
I've played both demos, one for about 20 minutes and one for about 3 hours, sort of explians itself. Mr Bojangles, you are wrong. There are MASSIVE differences between 08 and 09. Personaaly i'm not bothered about what other people buy in the slightest, I just wanted to state early that I wouldn't buy FIFA if it was a fiver as I only have the time to play one footy game. Scratch that, i don't see how FIFA can be described as football....
