Sony: DSi won’t expand Nintendo audience

Hardware marketing boss says rival will find it difficult to expand beyond the ‘under 12s’

Sony’s director of hardware marketing John Koller has complimented the new features of Nintendo’s new DSi – but questioned whether the console will significantly expand the firm’s audience.

Speaking to Gizmodo, Koller discussed the lukewarm reception Nintendo received after their last hardware revision – the DS Lite – and the mass success it’s enjoyed since.

He said: “Nintendo has kind of a history of these [moderate] kinds of updates, and even with DS Lite, there was a lot of discussion, ‘Is that enough?’ And they seemed to do pretty well there.

However, he later added:

“I can see the DSi being successful. The DS lite was obviously very successful. Will DSi do well with [the DS's] demographic? It probably will. Will it be a product that expands their user base [beyond] under 12? I'm not sure.”

Dare I say that they're potentially encouraging further piracy, if fans can't get a specific game in their own region?

under 12s?

Only the 12-15s seem to still be buying PSPs these days... I know of DS owners personally from 9 to 46 who all buy games regularly.

The region locking on the Wii & iTunes hasn't hurt business, anyone that thinks the DSi is any different is a fool. Lock regions all you want, if you release all games in all regions for a locally fair price the market is still yours.
