FIFA 09 enjoys record-breaking week one

Outsells last year’s game by 37.5 per cent, setting new records on Xbox 360 and PS2

Just two weeks after LucasArts’ The Force Unleashed set new records for week one sales of a Star Wars title, FIFA 09 has smashed the previous performances of EA’s sports sim to become one of the fastest selling games ever in the UK.

FIFA 09 shot straight to the top of the Gfk-ChartTrack All Formats Top 40 yesterday, holding two fingers up to the credit crunch by bettering the first week sales of FIFA 08 by an incredible 37.5 per cent.

42 per cent of the game’s sales were on Xbox 360, making it the third fastest selling game ever on Microsoft’s format behind only Grand Theft Auto IV and Halo 3. PS3 accounted for 40 per cent of the sales, with only Rockstar’s crime hit enjoying greater first week sales.

The PS2 version claimed 11 per cent of sales, the PSP three per cent whilst the rest was shared between Nintendo’s formats and PC.

42% on 360 and 40% on PS3. Yet Morrisons are only going to discount the PS3 FIFA 09? With the HW formats neck and neck in Fifa sales, that hardly makes sense.

PES defectors

I think this upsurge in part at least should be attributed to Pro Evo's failings in recent years. I have been a PES/ISS man since 1996. PES 2008 was a disappointment and FIFA 08 had some decent reviews.

This year I played both Xbox demos and for me FIFA was the better game. I've since bought FIFA09.

I am sure that PES will have a bumper week one as well, but it remains to be seen exactly how bumper.

Only sold this well due to the mass discounting by the supermarkets.

@Av

No actually, it sold this well because it's an absolutely superb game.

Yes it is a good game but the fact is that the £30 price point by the supermarket made it sell more than it would have sold at £39.99. I know at least 12 people who were going to wait but when Tesco put it down to £30, they could not resist.
