Fils-Aime: ‘We’ll always need retail’

Nintendo of America boss says digital downloads are merely ‘added business’

Nintendo of America chief Reggie Fils-Aime has pledged that the platform holder will always need retail to sell its boxed product.

Speaking to VentureBeat, Fils-Aime said that the digital capabilities of the firm’s new DSi would never become more important than boxed retail.

He commented:

“It’s a nice added business model but it’s not something that’s going to take over retail game sales. We’ll be able to see the sales growth and plan for it.

“But I guess similar to home consoles, the consumer will want an experience that’s best delivered through physical goods, simply because of the memory size required. There will always be those opportunities for big, in-depth games on retail products.”

While Reggie does have a point I'm guessing that his position of downloads Vs physical media has more to do with the fact that more than 80% of Nintendo's new audience would be more than a little confused, even intimidated, by the prospect of the download sector.

Well while it is fairly easy to distribute software via the net, retail will always be needed to distribute the Hardware and i think most companies distributing the hardware will request software stock as well.
