Autumn 2009 release for Bungie-developed Halo 3 prequel
Microsoft has unveiled a new chapter in the Halo franchise set for touchdown in autumn ’09, entitled Halo 3: Recon.
The Bungie-developed title, which has for weeks been teased on Bungie's official website (courting a little controversy in the process) will take the form of a standalone expansion set before the events of Halo 3. Players will take charge of a UNSC Marine.
Meanwhile, the Ensemble-developed RTS Halo Wars was also pencilled in for early 2009.
Halo 3: Recon was described as “a new chapter in the Halo saga that lets gamers experience events leading up to the epic story told in Halo 3 through the eyes of a new hero in the Halo universe” and promises “hours of new campaign excursions and multiplayer gameplay”.

No thanks I want the Chief to me Halo = MasterChief. I am sure many will disagree especially those that have read the books like my mate but still I associate Halo with the Chief.

I think it's a good idea. I feel it will add more depth to the Halo universe other then Master Chief (not that he is a bad character or anything) but after reading the books, comics etc etc it does make me want a game set before the first Halo so you can see the mass of other spartans (I know halo RTS has other spartans but tbh its RTS and dont really fit in a time period) so yer its a thumbs up from me!

I guess from the trailer you get to play an ODST this time, or poss a spartan scout.

Sorry, Which version of Halo 3 had the epic story? It wasn't in my copy.
Mine had a rather drab, uneventful story that didn't really go anywhere, with the second-to-last level being quite possibly one of the worse levels made for a video game since the sewer levels in Enter the Matrix.
Also my copy didn't have the huge battle environments where you could jump in and out of various fights on a huge battlefield, or was that Bungie Bull**** again?
