Microsoft details free 360 memory scheme

Plans to ensure all users are able to access new dashboard upgrade are revealed

Xbox 360 platform holder Microsoft has lifted the lid on its scheme to help those lacking memory space ahead of the release of the new Xbox dashboard upgrade next month.

Microsoft yesterday revealed that users would need 128MB of free storage space to run the New Xbox Experience – something that could be problematic for Xbox 360 Arcade or Core owners without a hard drive.

However, a new online initiative launched today is offering users the chance to upgrade their console’s memory in preparation for the launch. Once a console’s serial number is entered on the site, eligible users are offered either a free 512MB memory card or a refurbished 20GB HDD for £12.99.

The cost for US console users is $19.99 for the hard drive, or $29.99 for the HDD and three months Xbox Live Gold membership.

Although charging for a refurb 20gb for only £12.99 is extremely cheap it is interesting that Microsoft must charge for everything...I am glad I bought an Elite.

Oh and if you get a hard drive don't forget you can install the whole game to your hard drive (if you have the space) and it will load a bit quicker AND no disc spinning so no noise!

The benefits of having the hard drive are further added by the huge update that is on the way.

....they were hardly going to give 20GB hard drives away for free though were they.

In an ideal world yeah.

But they can't be seen to be giving away hard drives to arcade owners, otherwise anyone who bought the premium (20GB console) will feel hard done by as they would have paid more than £12.99 extra when they bought the premium console, If you get me.

I wonder

If you wait a few months will they run out of 'refurbs' and maybe even 20GBs and have to start selling refurb 60Gb or new 20s?

Unlikely, but possible the offer would still work?

Nice offer. Hopefully the offer will spread to high street retail.

Why do they have hard drives that need refurbishing in the first place? Usually when you have a problem with the console you keep your old hard drive and send off the machine.

Not really, for instance if you get an "E65" error on the console, it's a hard drive fault. Thereby you surely will send a hard drive back, not your console.
