Steve Jobs criticises Sony’s hi-def format for complicated licensing and technology
Apple boss Steve Jobs has launched a scathing attack on Sony’s high definition Blu-ray disc format, casting doubt on the likelihood that his firm’s range of Mac computers will support Blu-ray in the future.
Engadget quotes Jobs as stating: “Blu-ray is just a bag of hurt. It's great to watch the movies, but the licensing of the tech is so complex, we're waiting until things settle down and Blu-ray takes off in the marketplace.”
Apple, of course, recently unveiled its own HD movie downloads service through the globally popular iTunes, and may be looking to champion that form of hi-def delivery over any form of physical media.

blu ray
blu ray should take off with the number of ps3 owners out there.as a retialer i have run into a few problems though.the films require updates every now and then to play ,this is fine if you have broadband but a lot of people still dont i have had several returns of last weeks blu ray releases because if this.
why cant sony just put the update on the disc like a ps3 game ? also we find it very difficult to get people to pay £200 for a blu ray player when to the everyday man in the street the difference between an upscaling dvd player and a blu ray is not massive like vhs to dvd was .
i personally love it but think it may be a umd or mini disc again.
Re: blu ray
I can just picture Jobs sitting on his "Dr.Evil" swivel chair in his secret underground "Apple layer" shouting "ITS NOT A GOOD IDEA BECAUSE "I" DIDN'T FREAKIN' THINK OF IT, OK?!!"
Get the PS3 under 200 quid and then watch Blu-Ray become a serious format.

*lair not layer . . . . . . gawd my old english teacher would be furious . . . .
Re: Re: blu ray
The problem for blu-ray is that most films don't need HD - yes Lord of the rings and the like are brilliant in HD but why spend more to get say Love Actually on blu-ray when you won't notice any difference.
Personally I've only bought the Pirates of the Carribean and Pixar films on blu-ray most others I'm still getting of DVD because the cost difference isn't worth it.
Re: Re: Re: blu ray
BR films are too expensive. People don't buy stuff like that.
Re: Re: Re: Re: blu ray
It seems like at least a partly political/spin comment - there are a number of consumer computers from HP and Dell, to name a couple. It may be a bit of work, but I suspect it's got at least as much to do with Apple's target market not being the early adopter/tech nut type, as it is with licensing.

And yet Apple went with DisplayPort amongst other ideas Apple never had. Clearly you fail at Apple FUD.
Re: Re: blu ray
Give them their dues, Apple do know a good product when see one... cough, Ipod, cough.
and the point is...
Lets be honest here. If it wasn't for ps3, BRD would already be a dead format. As it is its struggling with ridiculously high prices and limited perceived benefit.
We are entering a global recession, people are cutting back. When DVD is so cheap and so good, then the vast majority of people won't bother. The odd HD fix can be had more conveniently and cheaper via d/load.
waste of time...
Re: and the point is...
@ Ian - It's probably fair to say that the hi-def war would still be in full-swing without Sony trojan-horsing Blu-Ray with the PS3, but from everything I'm reading on the net Blu-Ray is doing significantly better than PS3 at similar points in the lifecycle, and is achieving significant sales on its own accord (the reports on the release of Iron Man gave it sales numbers in the solid hundreds of thousands). I think it's important that in the modern 'ADD' day and age not to lose track of how long it takes for transitions from one format to another - it's definitely much, much slower for music and video media than it is for, say, gaming console formats, and comparing the rate of adoption between the two isn't really a fair comparison.
