Worldwide PlayStation boss says games are more important to PS3 than Blu-Ray capabilities
Global Sony Computer Entertainment boss Kaz Hirai has reiterated that the focus of PS3 is games – and demanded that PlayStation “can’t allow Nintendo to run off alone”.
Despite boasting of PS3’s Blu-Ray capability and processor power in the past, Hiari has once again said that the company’s focus for the system is games software.
In an interview with Nikkei (translated by Kotaku), Hirai said:
“The thing that I did when I took over last year was to boast the appeal of games themselves... The main premise of the PS3 is video games. That's the absolutely most important thing that we cannot lose sight of.
Hirai added that making games Sony’s priority would expand the firm’s position in the marketplace. And about Nintendo, Hirai said, "We cannot allow Nintendo run off alone."

Too little too late
Nintendo already have run off, no one is going to catch them.
Sony havent got anyone to blame but themselves though with their main focus one bigging up the cell processor and blu-ray films and not their games for the first party of its life.
Re: Too little too late
And with important titles finding their way onto the 360, (like FFXIII, Tekken 6, DMC and now very likey MGS 4), there's even less and less reason to buy a PS3 as a 'games console'.
It is not too late and x360 is finished in Jap/eu
It is never too little too late.
FF and Tekken are not big games this Gen. SONY has WKS which is bigger than all RPGS combined.
MGS4 will be PS3 exclusive. There is just no reason to buy an x360 a console with NO games except overrrated ones
With LBP SONY will win casual gamers. It was always on the cards. SONY will win this gen based on Just european sales alone
For MS console war ended ages ago in Japan and Europe. NA to go
Re: It is not too late and x360 is finished in Jap/eu
Wahey.. Larry's back from the Sony cave. ;) Lol.
Re: Re: It is not too late and x360 is finished in Jap/eu
Wow Larry must be very upset losing all the top exclusive to the Xbox 360 that he has to vent in that way, as far as I know Final Fantasy and Tekken are very big games but apparently not anymore according to Larry because they are coming to the 360.
Re: It is not too late and x360 is finished in Jap/eu
larry it seems like u belive in sony - but i followed them from the beginning and it does seem like they have lost their focus.. i had every console so not a fan boy of any just a lover of them all, but i was so fed up with the poor ps3 line up i sold my ps3 as it never seem to get powered on- sorry but mgs 4 didnt do it for me... the xbox 360 does come across as a better gamming system - more choice - and the online gamming (i know u dont want to hear it) is better than anything the ps3 has to offer. and the nail in the coffin the PRICE...and the promises of past i am one who needs a killer app and i don t think that with this genration of console anyone will have that.... software has a long way to go before we get that...
Re: LOL XBOTS above
Isnt that what everyone said whrn MGS4 was released?
That was Sonys BIGGEST release and it didnt dent the sales of the Xbox or the Wii.
If you think LBP is going to do anything different the your sadly mistaken.
Sony had dropped the ball this time round. The Xbox is beating it in Japan these past couple of weeks, and continues to get beaten day in day out every where else.
I like my PS3 but at the minute its my media player.
X360 costs less than a PS2 in Ja[pan
beat ps3 in Japan??
thats because people are waiting for LBP bundle and new PS3 on October 30th 2008
I use X360 as a DVD player only since it has no games
PS3 has sold 2.5m units in Japan in 3 years
vs just 670k units for x360 in 3 years
Ofcourse PS3 is murdering x360 in europe in terms of sales
PS3 beats x360 in WW sales even at 3x the price point
Re: X360 costs less than a PS2 in Ja[pan
I don't think Sony are actually to blame for Nintendo's unprecedented success - no one, not even I suspect Nintendo, could really have predicted how popular the Wii would turn out to be.
But Sony definitely made mistakes at the PS3's launch and the subsequent feature stripping from the original US/Japan launch model left many gamers very dissatisfied. Then there's the online service which is only now starting to offer basic features enjoyed by Xbox Live users since day one.
It's only now, with the new 80GB model leading as the main SKU in all regions that things have finally settled down and people have begun to accept the fact that PS2 backwards compatibility isn't coming back. PSN is maturing and online gaming *for free* is really coming into its own.
I very much love my PS3 - games like Uncharted, Metal Gear Solid 4 and the superb WipEout HD are really leading the way and I think LittleBigPlanet will only add to that.
Would I want to live with only my PS3 and give up games like Gears of War, Mass Effect and Bioshock (well, for a little bit longer...)? No. There's a place for a good gaming PC in every household! ;)
Re: Re: X360 costs less than a PS2 in Ja[pan
Last time i looked Larry the xbox 360 has sold more than PS3s, sold more games, and has more online users.
LBP looks alright but it wont be a major system seller, sure it will sell well for people who have the system.
Also Japan are interested RPG's, SHUMPS and FIGHTERS so to say FF and Tekken are not big is a fools chorus. WAKE UP FAN BOY!!!
Re: Re: Re: X360 costs less than a PS2 in Ja[pan
"Never give up, never surrender" eh..Larry? Dude it's obvious you love your PS3 and I'm happy for you, but denial is not a river that runs through Egypt. Sony sacrificed it's gaming fans to push Blu Ray and it's bit them in the a**. And MGS4 will come to the 360 because they need to recoup their losses from the lack of sales generated by the PS3. That's why Developers can no longer afford to publish for one console. Exclusives will come from the console studios only. Not to mention that in 2010 when the XBOX Next arrives the 360 prices will plummet for the entry level folks who just couldn't afford these high priced game consoles at launch. How does the PS3 survive that? Your console may be around for ten years but to compete and not get left behind they have to make a PS4. In other words you better get ready to dump another bucket of money on the next Sony experiment. At your expense.
well well
doesnt everyone here know everything about big business, and what each console company plans, we had a microsfot rep in who told us, 2 human was a flop, new viva pinata was a flop, xbox just had 2 years jump, i had one day 1 and loved it, everyone talks here like ps3 has already gone bust, xbox seem to live off halo and gears,i like all platforms, but i also like to play new games, not halo 4, 5, 6, or metal gear 10
Re: well well
When are Sony going to wake up and realise that the PS3 doesn't really have any killer games. Also, no matter what games come out for it, the Wii and 360 are going to be around with their killer games. In the UK, the PS3 sells for a whopping £300 (around $600) which is an hilarious price when you look at what the Wii and 360 are selling for. If Sony wants to sell 120m+ consoles like it did with the PS2, the PS3 is going to have to sell for under £200, more around the £150 mark. Sony just don't see it....
