Theo Walcott 'trains' on FIFA and PES

John Terry reveals England’s footballing marvel improves his skills with video games

‘England wonderboy Theo Walcott owes his Three Lions success to footie computer games.’

That’s according to the Daily Star, which today reports that the England star practises his skills on FIFA and Pro Evolution Soccer when on tour with the national side – and that both games have improved his ability on the pitch.

That would make Walcott a naughty boy according to previous reports, which suggest England manager Fabio Capello is no fan of video games.

Terry, 27, revealed that Walcott only hit the back of the net for his country after honing his skills on consoles – and that the games could even help Walcott triumph in England's game against Belarus tonight.

The Chelsea defender added that the teenager struggled to get used to life in the Three Lions camp until he started bonding with teammates over the games.

Terry said: “He’s been a little bit quiet, but we all went through that phase when we got into the England squad. Once you get established you come out of your shell.

“We coaxed him out by playing on the computer around the hotel. We got him playing on it with us.

“It’s the little things like that which get younger lads out of their shell and it has shown in his performances.”

We fully support the use of games in this way to support young people in developing their skills. We work especially with hard to reach young people that lack motivation and confidence in the real world by engaging them in games based activities that lead to them developing skills and coming out of their shell.

Also, Lewis Hamilton is said to improve his knowledge of tracks and driving in various conditions through the variety of F1 titles on the market.

Thanks for the words of support. The hardest issue we face is peoples/teachers/MP’s misunderstanding of the positive potential of games and how they are one of the languages that young people are growing up with. Games need to be understood for its role in helping people learn, play, enjoy, explore and develop. The creativity that goes into games can only be seen as a good thing.

The sad thing is that the papers only like to pick on the negative and force it so much down people’s necks it has stigmatised games as an antisocial pass time, when indeed it is totally the opposite.

The teachers we work with are starting to understand how games can bring subjects to life and encourage young minds to explore learning in a funky and cool way which has one of the major positive impacts education is desperate to achieve, it has lasting effect!.

I could go on forever about this subject. The more people that support the work that we and other companies that work in this sector do the better chance that opportunities can be made available in the future.
