360 can handle MGS4, says Microsoft

Xbox Live boss tells MCV he’d “love to see Kojima’s masterpiece on our machine”

Microsoft’s Xbox Live boss has told MCV that Xbox 360 definitely has the power to “handle” Metal Gear Solid 4 – and talked of his admiration for “Kojima-san’s masterpiece”.

John Schappert, the firm's corporate vice-president of Live, Software and Services, said that he would “love to see the game come to 360", and boasted of Xbox’s “horsepower”.

His comments came after Konami’s Yoshitaka Arai allegedly told a Japanese newspaper: “The worldwide demand for an Xbox 360 version of MGS4 is quite high, and it is something we are currently looking in to.”

Sony US boss Jack Tretton previously told MCV that MGS4 on Xbox 360 was an "impossibility".

Schappert told MCV:

“I’m certainly in the fan club that would love to see Kojima-san’s masterpiece come our way. It would be wonderful to play Metal Gear Solid on the Xbox. It could become another of the many franchises that started their life on another console that are now coming our way.

“I can’t speak on behalf of Konami, but I can shed more light on the fact that we definitely have the power to run MGS4.

"There are a lot of recent examples that are in true high-def on our platform and aren’t on PS3. We’ve got an amazing amount of horsepower and graphics power.”

MGS4 yes I have to agree its “Kojima-san’s masterpiece” but on a cinematic and visual level. The dialogue story telling and sense of humour is so Eastern that I actually found the whole thing quite silly, and at times horribly boring.

Don’t be fooled by the hype and obvious butt licking that’s going on from all sides here, as MGS4 is most certainly not to everyone’s taste.

From what I know the game is 30gb therefore it could easily fit on 4dvd's. Each DVD9 can hold 8.5gb of data.

The parts where you actually play the game are unsurpassed. Unfortunately I can almost say the action is TOO varied and probably too sparse between cutscenes. The story was gripping at some points (big boss' body, for example) but just crap at others (hello, drebin!). Haven't had the urge to replay it yet...

Wait a minute a MS employee states an MS machine could run MGS4 and that's a nail in the PS3's coffin?! What were you expecting him to say? "No the 360 can't run it and won't get it so go by a PS3 please"?! Why should his word be any more trusted than when Jack Tretton said it's impossible?
This is classic MS marketing - they've seen blogs touting the rumour again, thanks to some random Konami employees translated japanese statement about the fact 360 fanboys would want to see it on 360 - so now they issue a statement to cause some FUD in the mind of potential PS3 adopters!
Is it me or is MS far more concerned with ensuring the PS3 fails than it is ensuring the 360 is successful? It wouldn't surpirse me if MS would happily pay $50M to bring this year-old PS3 release to the 360, but if I owned a 360 I'd much rather them spend their cash on compelling 1st party titles rather than old PS franchises, exclusive DLC and exclusive Game Demos....

It's classic 360 fanboys too - when it came out on PS3 it was "doesn't matter, it's a **** game anyway, 360 owners like playing games not watching them", but when there's a sniff it could come to 360, suddenly it's the most important game of the 21st Century!!! Same with installs - 360 owners claim to hate them, but then say how it's no big deal to install multi-disc games on the HDD thanks to the new install functionality of the coming update!

Until I hear it from Kojima (or even someone SENIOR in Konami) I will not believe it - it's just more mud (or rather FUD) slinging from MS and it's seemingly endless supply of internet minions that blog about it.

This title needed to sell 1M copies in it's launch period to break even - in it's first 10 weeks it sold 3.5M copies, and god knows what that's grown to since - there is no reason to spend further money *trying* to port it (unless MS ponies up enough bags of cash).

Kojima himself has said from the horses mouth that he couldn't make it on XBox - so I'm more inclined to believe him than any other random nobody. In comparison the Devs behind Gears of War II could "easily" be released on PS3 but their publishers (i.e. Microsoft) wouldn't like it!!!

The PS2 owned the last generation, and by comparison the Gamecube and Xbox were failures, it stands to reason that ANY third-party sequel to a previous gen game is highly likely to have been a former PS exclusive franchise - this is not news or bad in anyway for the PS3 (they still get it too remember!).

It happens just as much to 360 third-party franchises - Lost Planet, Bioshock, Eternal Sonata, Ninja Gaiden (the original one), Mass Effect (rumoured), Left 4 Dead (rumoured), Dead Rising (rumoured). Geometry Wars, etc etc etc. - But why does no one bat an eyelid at these???

Why does everyone assume that the "death of 3rd-party exclusives" will be the death of the PS3? That would be the PS3 from Sony with around 23 active 1st party developers? Yet for some reason they think the garden is rosey for the 360, that would be the 360 from MS with around 3 activer 1st party developers!!!

First off i don't like the MGS4 series one bit, i tried to get into them but just found them incredibly boring so i will not be buying MGS4 on any console, with that out the way i know the game does have quite a large following and it has always been obvious to me that this was a timed exclusive. The advantages to both Sony and Konami of concealing that fact is obvious, from Sony's point of view it had a better chance of driving sales if it was believed that you would have to purchase a PS3 in order to play the game and for Konami it prevented fans of the series who only owned the 360 from waiting for that version and impacting it's initial sales. In truth the developement costs of this game was always going to make a multi platform release necessary, they could have done a simultaneous release but i think they understood that Sony needed a game to drive hardware sales and a staggered release would keep the game high profile for a longer period. Without large cash incentives from MS or Sony you should expect all large budget, third party games to go multi platform, regardless of if they start off as exclusive, only first party, budget and small indy games studios may be the exceptions.

Why do we xbox owners persist with this rubbish, Hideo Kojima is a Playstation Fanboy and will never allow MGS4 to come to our console. His company Kojima productions own the rights to it and its him that decide whether it will appear on any other format, and has said no repeatedly! There is about as much chance of this happening as Halo 3 appearing on PS3!!!!
Beside its LBP and Killzone 2 that look more of a threat to Xbox, I am really tempted to buy a PS3 to play these! And sorry to say it they look better than any game on Xbox at the mo including GOW2.

Ha ha! This is so funny. I remember when MGS4 came out and 360 owners were like "Oh it's a rubbish game anyway" and "we don't need this on our console" and "it's not even a game, it's just a load of cutscenes".

But now, when some Microsoft Executive turns round and says it is possible to run this on the 360, some quarters start shouting that this is the end of the PS3 and that they can't wait for this to come out! (I've been looking at this thread and the other one on this site BTW.)

This is just Microsoft yet again starting a war of words. Nothing more. Yes they may splash the cash (again) and try and get this because they seem to be more interested in ensuring that the PS3 fails rather than giving their customers a decent console (sorry I had to say that but I had two go wrong on me before I bought a 40gb PS3 which has given me no trouble).

Also does he not say "We’ve got an amazing amount of horsepower and graphics power."? Yes that's true, but one thing missing here is the disk capacity and I thought that was crucial to MGS4 as it almost fills a Blu-ray disc.

Of course it could come on seven discs which you could install provided you have the hard disk space, but how much fun would that be. Especially when as soon as a dual platform game comes out and the PS3 needs a five minute install, all 360 owners come out with the classic "I don't need to install it, I can run it straight away" and "I don't want to fill up my hard drive", "If I wanted to install the game I would have bought it for my PC" etc etc.

Anyway I couldn't care less if I does go to the 360. Nothing would get me buying another one. Yes it's good fun to play with, but so is the PS3. And the PS3 is getting Little Big Planet and I couldn't care less if that comes out on the 360 in a year's time. I'm going to playing it in a few weeks and that's what matters to me.

Yeah, it would run on that console... for just 5 minutes and then the gpu would send flames through your livingroom...

Funny: For the Xbots first MGS4 was lame, to much eastern, to strange, just a movie to watch, nothing to play with - no one from them wanted that excellent piece of software just MS themselves like this german guy Boris Schneider-Johne...

Now realising that there aren't any highlight-games in 2009 except the multiformat-titles the Xbox-fans started a viral rant worldwide, just to get Konami to do a conversion.

Nowadays Internet sucks globally just because of bought "opions" and this every-day-viral-nonsense.

Just don't use uncompressed audio. Compress everything up and you'd be looking at 1-2 DVD's at the most. Isn't MGS something like 4-6 hours of actual gameplay and the rest is all FMV? You can't tell me that compression won't make the game small enough to fit on a DVD or two. If RockStar can fit all of the assets for GTA IV on a DVD why can't a 6 hour game fit as well?

I'm not a huge fan of MGS but I am curious to see if the 360 could run the game.
All the PS3 fanboys I know say that the 360's power isn't enough to handle the game - like what the Sony bosses said to the world.

I'd be just interested to see if it is possible. Hopefully it will either shut up the PS3 fanboys. Or make all us 360 owners cry. But at least we'd get an answer.

MSG4 is 50 gb not 30 so it would take abot 6 dvd 9 if it is made on the 360. which it would of cost Konami more to mass produce a 6 disk game than a 1 disk game.

I think 7 might be about right really some of the cut scenes will take up most of that. maybe it will be an install only 360 games. don't forget its not just as simple as dividing the total amount of data by 8 GB its all about the amount of textures and sounds that would need to be present on each disc for it to work

nah ms and just accept that there console is too weak

And the PS3 is getting Little Big Planet and I couldn't care less if that comes out on the 360 in a year's time. I'm going to playing it in a few weeks and that's what matters to me.

Especially when as soon as a dual platform game comes out and the PS3 needs a five minute install, all 360 owners come out with the classic "I don't need to install it, I can run it straight away" and "I don't want to fill up my hard drive", "If I wanted to install the game I would have bought it for my PC" etc etc.

first the DVD9 is not fully used because of MS things so its about 7 or 8 gigs.
then we finished the game and who wanted to play it will already own a ps3 by now so whats the point
and then they lied about the XBOX power only if they want to play the without those amazing robot things you can do while snake is talking in cut scenes
lastly the xbox i crap dying console and PS3 is a monster system according to kojima

Kojima Filled the entire 50gb blu ray so I don't know where you are getting the 30 from if it where to port it to a DVD9 it would take much more than 4 disc I say it would take 6-7 disc.

I don't think well see this on Xbox 360 there is too much Sony adversitment on this game to even see it on 360.

Are you serious! The xbox will never be able to run mgs4. It is a huge immpossibility. The custom weapon system is an entire dvd or game worth of data. A ps3 can barely support it anyway. Blu- ray can consist of way moe data. Mgs4 for ps3 was so compact on the blu-ray sisc already. Now try to put it on a dvd. I can't express this enough, UTTERLY IMPOSSIBLE!!!!

I agree that if it crosses over to the 360, then it could spell trouble for PS3, since a great deal of their other previously exclusive content has decided to share their profits. But if it did get the port treatment, the 360 players would be getting a different game. People up here have already talked about cutting stuff in order to narrow the number of discs required, and once you cut out all the Sony/Apple/etc references, that would alter your game considerably.
But it's probably too late for this to hurt Sony's profits too much, since the game has been out for months, so anyone who was going to get a PS3 for this already have, or would by Christmas.

MGS4 took up all 50GB of a Dual-Layered Blu-Ray disc, so it's [potential] 360 counterpart would have to be at least 6 discs. Plus, there's way too many Playstation-oriented things in MGS4, such as controls, jokes, Sunny having a Gun Metal PS3 and a PSP, etc. Also, I don't think that the 360 could run it even close to what the PS3 does. They'd have to change and redo so much stuff that it wouldn't even be the same game, nor would it run as smooth.

The game started at 100GB but that wouldn't fit on a PS3 Bluray so the they made to fit the 50GB and if it went to the 360 then its going to lose alot or be 9 to 10 disc game. Then they got to redo the game because MS won't like the joke thats in the game.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xdF_DAWL2k0" onclick="window.open ( this.href ); return false;" class="comment_url" >http://www.youtube...WL2k0
In game joke that wouldn't be on 360 and if was MS wouldn't be happy.

Its a little too late to snatch this PS3 exclusive... Microsoft shelled out lots of cash for other exclusives like Devil May Cry 4, Gran theft Auto 4 and Final Fantasy XIII. And guess what, playstation owners got the shaft and got watered down games because they had to squeeze these games onto 1 dvd.
Now that I've already played the best game ever made months ago, I really don't give a **** if it comes on xbox or not because it didn't ruin my experience. Games like devil may cry 4, assasins creed and gta 4 all got chopped to be squeezed onto 1 dvd. Thats why PS3 exclusives are way better then all the rest.
I just wonder how they're gonna cram 50 gigs of goodness onto a few dvds. Maybe you xbots will get an extra gimped version or have to get use to switching a lot of discs.

I own a 360, and very happy with the choice. When the PS3 comes down to a reasonable price point, and finally has some decent software on it (roll on 2009!) .I will own that too. I dont know why everyone is so caught up in this game . . . . . . I dunno, am I the only person that finds the extensiive FMV cutscenes and the meandering, confused ,eastern story puked-up from a repressed, wannabe film director just pathetic?

Theres one simple reason this game will never appear on the 360, regardless if we somehow miracled away the storage issues . . . . . And thats Hideo himself.

He represents the last vanguard of the internalised, narrow minded game developers that typified the game industry back when Japan itself ruled the roost in the gaming world. There is no way this is ever coming to the 360. My advice? Wait 3yrs. Buy a cheap-arse slimline PS3. Buy MGS4 on the platinum range for 15 quid. Play/Watch/Be baffled by the incomprehensible ball54it and hackneyed "moral themes" that are presented. Realise that you've grown up since MGS1 (in the same way that you grew up after the original starwars trilogy, and no bouts of heavy nostalgia are ever going to carry you through the new films) and trained killers agonising over the duality of man in toilets/over fried eggs isn't good film-making or good gaming. Raise a family, build a hospital in Rwanda. Move on.

Its so funny hearing people that have a PS3 and no games to play but Metal Gear Solid 4 get mad that there one game that caused people to wast 400 to 500 bucks on a 80 pound black blu ray player for one game. And that game is coming to people that have a 360. Only people that don't have internet, don't wanna play online, and don't wanna play decent games and wanna spend a crap load of money on one movie will buy a PS3. When you can get a 120GB Elite with HDMI (100 dollar HDMI cable included)

MGS4 will never be on the 360. Power is not the issue. The issue is storage and media. MGS4 is simply too big. Most estimates pin the game around 33 GB, but some say it is as high as 42-45 GB. Even the Blu-Ray media was not big enough to hold it all, and therefore, some of the data is compressed, which is why you have to install a portion of the data before every act. Parts are uncompressed and put onto the PS3 HD temporarily until the next Act. Not only can you not fit hardly any of it on a DVD for the 360, the 360 does not have the compression technology that the PS3 has, and therefore you would be stuck with a minimum of 7 or so game disks. Not to mention it would have to be toned down and completely remade, since it was made specifically around the PS3's power and technology. So no...not gonna happen.

no matter what MS says, kojima productions had to compress so much stuff to get MGS4 to actually fit on the Blu-ray disc. So could someone explain to me how MS is gonna get all that onto their puny little dvds

nd btw u can say that MGS4 has "6 hours of gameplay" its actually 20 and about 30 with all the cutscenes. so close ur ****ing mouth and go research ur crap before you post stuff

xbox360 owners are just jealos that ps3 is making a big impact now with killzone 2, little big planet, resistance 2, god of war 3. what do you guys have? halo? gears?
ya those are good games but you only have like 3 popular exclusives and the ps3 has almost like 10. the only reason people still say "there are more games for the xbox" is cuz ur system came out an hour earlier

nd u guys have so much crap wrong with the xbox. red ring of death ring any bells? haha besides your initial hard drive space is tiny unless you wanna dish out the extra cash to upgrade. ps3 comes with all the room you need. AND ps3 has free online multiplayer. now i dont have to spend over $200 in 1 year just to play online.

plus we can surf the web and we can stream movies in real time so suck it! =P

MGS series

posted by Mike Mar 27, 2009 at 5:27 pm

Mike

The MGS series is the most boring stealth action game ever. It doesn't even require stealth at all. In fact I don't even care much about gun games, FPS or TPS. The only shooter games I'll play are Resident Evil. And I don't consider the DMC series a shooter since most of the time you can attack them with your sword since the get very close.

So far that I've seen, all the games that are only on PS3 are shooters other than Heavenly Sword(gay) and God of War(even gayer). Besides most games that are on PS3, are also on 360. So I bought a 360 to save myself a couple hundred dollars. PS3 is to expensive for nothing. Blu-ray isn't all that good to begin with so I don't care about it.

And Snake is an idiot anyway. I am a nintendo fan and made me a little mad that he was in SSBB and those who say Ike took Roy's place are wrong. Snake took Roy's place.

I forgot where I was going with any of this but in conclusion
1. PS3 blows big ****ing donkey ****
2. MGS is boring as hell and from what I've heard 4 is full of nothing but cutscenes
3. Blu-ray is just a DVD with a different name
4. Though it wasn't mentioned in my comment, HD's picture is no different from blu-ray or a DVD

So screw all you. Except those who are on my side.
