Konami reveals huge UK marketing pot for triple-A football title
Konami’s biggest marketing spend ever will help Pro Evolution Soccer 2009 become the fastest-selling title in the franchise’s history, the publisher has told MCV.
The title touches down at retail today (Friday October 17th), and to coincide with its retail release Konami has embarked on a promotional campaign worth £2 million – a sum that will ensure it is the biggest-selling iteration of the famous franchise the trade has ever seen, according to the publisher.
“With PES 2009 being one of the key releases of the year for us, it will enjoy the biggest spend of any Konami title ever,” Konami UK marketing manager Rosemarie Dalton revealed to MCV. “We are spending over £2 million on it this year.
“The campaign is already in progress, with TV advertising well under way featuring Messi and the PES Unites message, and pitch-side hoardings at key Premiership grounds.
“Following this, a widespread online and press campaign, plus key in-store activity will follow. Activity will continue long after the initial launch, and will be updated for a return in the spring when the Wii version is released to retail.”

And when asked whether Pro Evolution Soccer 2009 can trump all previous versions in terms of pre-Christmas sales, Dalton added:
“Yes – every year, PES has grown, and with the new additions and the PES Unites campaign, we are certain that this will continue with the 2009 edition.”
PES 2009, the latest in the award winning series, is available on multiple formats, including PC, PS3, Xbox 360, PS2, PSP and Wii.

Save that money
Fifa is the better game this year believe it or not. What a shame, i remember when Pro evo used to be the hardcore gamers choice as the best football game on the market i never thought this day would come.
Re: Save that money
Its a sad day but i agree FIFA has made the next gen improvements PES has gone backwards they can't even get the squads right all transfers were done & dusted 1st Sept how long does it take to process them lazy & amaterish.Just played Man City & was expecting to face Robinio & Wright philips instead was up against Rolando Bianchi was half expecting Shaun Goater to come on at half time sorry its crap i am going to buy my first FIFA since 96 & thats upsetting.
Re: Re: Save that money
for the first time in over ten years, i now have bought fifa 2009. what sad times, last years pes was so poor, i had tears in my eyes and to be honest konami needs to spend 2 million on advertising because the game is a hardly an improvement from last year. online still sucks, gameplay has not really developed as one would expect, it seems konami have lost the plot, pes fails to impress and fifa are going from strength to strength. pes what a tragedy?
Re: Re: Re: Save that money
As a PES fan that is still going to be buying this game, I have no comeback to those FIFA09 owners who are laughing at us.
If Konami put as little innovation - which is perceived by many to equal 'liitle effort'- into PE10 as they did PES08 and PES09 then that will be the death of the game as a major franchise. It may remain on the fringes played by a minority made up of deluded fanboy fanatics, people too proud and bitter to move to FIFA and those people who can actually ignore the last-gen appearance - which takes admirable zen like qualities.
I certainly hope not though. PES2009 seems like what 08 should have been. In fact it's what 07 should have been, 09 is what they first next-gen effort should have been so Konami have over 2 years of ground to make up on EA.
Re: Re: Re: Save that money
PES 09 has been out for 1 day now (or for those lucky enough a couple of days). I can honestly say I am very pleased with this years PES. I dont really care about official names, stadia, etc as these can all be amended. I tried FIFA and didnt like it, that doesnt mean its a bad game, its just not for me. If you are going to criticise can you try and be constructive, so we know your argument is reasoned. At the moment we seem to have too many PES 5/6 was great and 09 is'nt as good reviews. The gameplay is excellent, the mp3 chant addition is genius and the create a player (using eye toy) is very amusing. Add your mates and you have at least a years worth of entertainment, major winner for me.
Re: Re: Re: Re: Save that money
I think it is constructive to say that Fifa is now the premier current gen football game. Anyone who thinks Pro evo is a better game is saying it only because the engine remains the same as last year and is in the comfort zone to what they know. I have played a game on fifa 09 and then a game on pes 09 and there is a marked difference in quality between the two games, i am so used to pro evo but am now more keen to the idea of learning the new fifa 09 as it is a much better game - I hope Konami do what EA did and brainstorm on the new PES next year so we the consumer get more competition as to which football game to go for next year.
Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Save that money
I was so disappointed with the new Pro Evolution, that after playing 5 games I tried to take it back to Asda, they wouldn't take it back (copyright), so lost £2 by taking it to Gamestation. I have always been a Pro man, but have now been converted to Fifa! Everything about the game is far superior and it's more of a challenge. If you're not sure which to buy, my advice would be don't buy Pro, get Fifa - I have told all of my mates this as well.
Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Save that money
Hey, Hey... Dont do that, please... I'm waiting to see the US version of PES 2009, I preferred pes2008 to fifa 2008, not for it being better overall, but there are aspects of gameplay that EA still need to capture. I can tell you though the atmosphere generated by commentary and the crowd was unnerving in fifa, made me feel like I wasted the last ten years playing PES. Then I realized something, gameplay almost felt scripted, dribbling controls felt too haphazard even though the moves were exciting. But then I tried something, muting my tv, FIFA never had me on the edge of my seat, I set the difficulty higher and the game just felt, well, more difficult. EA still need need to master the physics of football, maybe just the science of physics. Basically, flaws aside, and there are quite a few (like some GK reactions, this hurts) PES is the winner in the technical and tactical areas of gameplay (by a short distance this time). On all other front EA whips Konami's b***side. I'm not dumping PES for twoyears of shortcomings after so many years of joy for me and my friend who stayed up all night and had our eyes burning while in school trying to stay awake. My word is let's let everybody decide for him/herself (a few female followers are there too). Heck, if fifa plays as realistically as even PES5 I might be tempted to cross over to the dark side. OPEN MIND PEOPLE, PLEASE...
Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Save that money
Konami robbed me again.
How can a once great franchise turn to this turd?
Honestly pains me to say it but as a complete package fifa 09 is the better buy i have zero faith left in konamis online support and after all the promises to rectify the problems of last year Konami should be ashamed torelease effectively the same game with the same problems and a stolen fifa feature in be a pro, sorry become a legend.
However the game is still solid when played in a good lag free environment with 2 players at one console but heck who does that anymore?
Btw i am playing pes09 dissapointed on the ps3
Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Save that money
Sorry Lee,
but 2 players at one console will be played MANY times .... when you having friends... so it sucks big time
Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Save that money
Have to agree with all the comments after buying Pro Evo for so long 2008 and now 2009 version is complete tripe.
If like me your main reason to buy a next generation console was to enjoy online pro evo gaming then your gona be seriously disappointed!
Save your money by PES6 for the best online football game. FIFA is ok, but game play still needs some work though has come on leaps and bounds vs previous versions.
Konami - In this version have been really lazy the game play hasn't really moved on from 2008 which was pants! and all they have done is sharpen the graphics slightly.
I was against buying 2009 after 2008 but fell for the cheap price with early release....
2010 will not be bought until I know that you have improved it!
