LittleBigPlanet delayed after Qur’an blunder

Media Molecule's platformer is delayed in all global territories; new release date yet to be announced

Sony has confirmed that its highly anticipated LittleBigPlanet has been pushed back to an unspecified date, following the discovery of Qur’an expressions in the soundtrack.

The game was due to be released on October 24th in Europe and October 21st in North America, and is tipped to be the PlayStation 3’s biggest Christmas release, having received rave reviews from the specialist press.

A statement from Sony read:

"During the review process prior to the release of LittleBigPlanet, it has been brought to our attention that one of the background music tracks licensed from a record label for use in the game contains two expressions that can be found in the Qur'an. We have taken immediate action to rectify this and we sincerely apologise for any offence that this may have caused."

Blunder?

This is no blunder. Once again, people who should have no say ruin it for the rest of us. I'd be saying the same thing if crazy Christians started ranting about being offended by some Jesus song. To be honest, if Christians were to complain Sony probably wouldn't do anything about it. Why delay the game? Why can't we just have a patch a few days or weeks after the game is released?

I've heard the guilty music clip:
no bad words just an Arabic sample for the music,
how can this be so offensive?

I suspect lots of user levels will be more offensive. All references to superstitions should be removed from the game, no ladders, black cats and aren't the sackboys a bit voodoo?

So a couple of Arabic samples are bad, but a fire-fight in a church is fine...

If this literally has only just been discovered, knowing the submission and manufacture process, you'll be lucky to see this before December now

As far as I understand, it is considered offensive to Muslims to use sections from the Qur'an in what might be considered base ways. I used to work with a lot of muslim guys and at the time I wrote graffiti, I asked them about learning some kind of Arabic because it's aesthetically pleasing and at first they were horrified because they thought I wanted to paint up verses from the Qur'an! I presume Sony is changing this because it's a lot cheaper than changing a level, is in comparative terms of offence probably a lot higher and is more likely to prevent people buying it than the Manchester section in Resistance is.

If people believe in hocus pocus then they deserve to be offended. I would write something offensive about all the major religions here on this board but Intent Media are likely to get firebombed by a religious zealots - like that crazy tart Sarah Palin from Alaska.

This is nothing new in the games industry. A few high profile games have had to pull versions off of shelves due to offensive materials relating to the Qur'an. Any decent global localization team worth its price employs experts in this area to catch these things well in advance.

... that strives to eliminate all religions from the world, a kind of Secular Cruisade. We could call it "GOD KILLER" or something that the Daily Mail will have a heart attack over. Now, are there any publishers out there that would be brave enough.... that could take all the hate directed at them.... that has a poor enough reputation..... Hmmm, where is Mark Cale when you need him?

its offensive to put phrases out the quran on a soundtrack and on a game. as a muslim i would be offended. lot of people will say who cares, but care you should, if u stop thinking and caring, then our society as whole will suffer. kids are out of control these days, commiting murders, dis respecting their parents, why? because they dont care, the only person they think about is themselves, no one else. As individuals we must respect each one an another, regardless of race or religion etc. peace

I think it's silly to be offended by words simply because they are part of a holy book- especially if they aren't being said in an offensive way or being mocked.
BUT the so-called enlightened west still has silly things that offend us like 'naughty' banned swear words that wouldn't get passes the censors, so we can't be too high and mighty when judging other cultures for what they find offensive.
Having empathy for others even if you disagree with them is a value we need to encourage more in this global gaming community of ours.
In a debate like this you don't have the high ground just because you have a smaller list of ridiculous things that offend you, you'd have the high ground if you had absolutely nothing silly that offended you. Who qualifies?

Actually, it was me who sent the notice to Sony. I heard some randoms arabic sentence and just pretend it was from the Quran. These idiots at Sony obviously took me seriously... they could have check it at least. Anyway, as an ex Microsoft employee, I am quite happy by my stunt.

Ok, that's BS. but surely Sony's lawers probably didn't really evaluate the pro & cons. A day one patch with some "excuses" would have been enough. Lawers are idiots... I work on a game (with less hype of course than LBP) who had a similar problem with panties (just after the hot coffe problem). The publisher destroyed around 100K copies already manufactured and delayed the game slightly... just to find out that the games was a flop... This was non-sense... Like I said, lawers are idiots...

As a gamer I find this very frustrating because of the release being pushed back but also an understanding of why. I do agree on some levels as to reasons why LBP has been pulled for a few weeks. Lets just let the publishers do what they have gotta do to get this game out there, the sooner the better...
